Far Cry 3 – Three Primary Factors (LORE)

Backstory and historical fan fiction on the lore of Rook Island. Rook Island is broken up into a number of factions, below is a brief listing and breakdown of each faction.

The Privateers:

“This is the tale of Hoyt's privateers, hired guns with hearts full of lead. Some hail from armies, some recruited raw, all intend big profits from the end of your life. They are the true power on the island."

The Privateers are a faction of mercenaries based on the Rook Islands led by Hoyt Volker. Compared to Vaas' Pirates, they are much better equipped and organized, wearing tactical gear and using state of the art weaponry. Most of the Privateers have military training to fight professionally.

They were hired by Hoyt to protect him and his business. They can be distinguished by their yellow clothing and armor. After the events of Far Cry 3, despite their superior training and better equipment, they were eliminated by the Rakyat. It is assumed that the remaining privateers were captured by either Indonesia or a new, stable Rook Islander government.

Background:

The Privateers take the Pirates' place as enemies once the player reaches the Southern Island, being tougher to take down than the latter, but once Jason acquires the Privateer recruit uniform, they will only attack if provoked. It is important to note that even when wearing the uniform, Jason is not allowed to enter high-security command centers or outposts.

Also, Jason will not be allowed to attack civilians while wearing the Privateer suit; doing so will cause nearby Rakyat to attack him. The Privateer uniform also has no effect on Vaas' pirates and they will still attack him on sight, indeed, it has been shown in the mission "Defusing the Situation" that the pirates attack the privateers' drug fields which may be related to Jason in privateer uniform having no effect on Vaas' Pirates.

The Rakyat:

“The Rakyat have lived on the Rook Islands for uncounted years. Like the rock and sand of the beaches, they are survivors. The keepers of secrets. Very few are allowed into their culture and even less invited to join the ranks of their warriors.”

The Rakyat is a tribe indigenous to the Rook Islands archipelago. Their leader is Citra Talugmai.

Background:

During the course of the game, Jason Brody will be tasked with helping the natives liberate the islands from pirate control.

There are two types of Rakyat: Rebel Defender and Rebel Assaulter. Compared to factions such as the Pirates and Privateers the Rakyat are grossly outgunned. What they do have is a passionately methodical sense of honor and an unbreakable determination to free Rook Island from tyrants such as Vaas and Hoyt.

The Rakyat are an isolationist ethnic group - only the few likes of Dennis and Jason are accepted as long as they completely assimilate into their simple, instinctive way of life. Rakyat Males generally receive a somewhat Spartan upbringing, learning survival and hunting skills at an early age.

The Pirates:

“This is the tale of Vaas's pirate hordes, who came to the island to rape, pillage and steal. They wanted one thing, they wanted money, and it would be theirs, no matter the cost. Vaas holds court, the Jester of Rook Island, but is your machete what lies in store?”

The Pirates are a criminal faction in Far Cry 3 and in The Far Cry Experience located on the Rook Islands' northern island. They are led by Vaas Montenegro. Fueled by the lust for money, they came to the Rook Islands to rape, pillage, steal, and murder.

They are the first enemy faction that Jason Brody encounters and can usually be found patrolling the island or at outposts and are easily distinguishable from the Privateers, Rakyat and common villagers by their red clothing.

The Pirates hold a grudge against the Rakyat, and these factions will attack each other on sight. They have an unsteady alliance with Hoyt Volker's Privateers, but this alliance is broken when Jason kills Vaas. The Pirates have lower quality weapons and equipment than the Privateers.

Pirates are not exceptionally skilled fighters; they are prone to firing randomly into the bushes or throwing grenades at random in hopes of flushing Jason into the open. After the events of Far Cry 3, they are eliminated by the Rakyat due to their very poor training and tactics. Most likely any remaining pirates return to their countries of origin.
