How to fix keyboard controls not working on Sonic Generations

Sonic Generations currently has a bug that doesn't let you use keyboard controls. This isn't an issue for everyone, but it is a problem that a lot of people, including myself, have had since the game released. Fortunately, I have finally found a solution that worked for me and should work for you!

The problem should be your keyboard language.

Since I live in the UK, my keyboard language is set to English - United Kingdom by default. It turns out that for some reason, Sonic Generations specifically does not recognise this language. So, what you'll want to do for the time being is change your keyboard language to English - United States International because the game recognises this. Here's how you do it:

Step 1

Go to Settings. Do this by holding the Windows Key + i, or click the Windows icon in the corner of your screen and click on the little settings icon.

Step 2

Go to Time & Language. After you click on this, click on Language. At the bottom, you should see Preferred languages. Below that, click on whatever language it says there (in this case it should be English - United Kingdom) and then click on Options.

Step 3

At the bottom of this section, you should see Keyboards. Below this, you will see your current keyboard language and the option to Add a keyboard. Click on that and look for United States - International. After you've added this, make sure your keyboard language is set to this. If it doesn't set it to that automatically after adding it, there should be a little button on your taskbar next to the date and time that says ENG UK. Click on that and change it to ENG INTL. You should easily be able to switch between the two languages this way.

And finally...

Open the game, select Sonic Generations and see if your keyboard controls work. This solution fixed my problem and hopefully it fixes yours too! If not, you may have a different problem and I recommend reporting it to Sega Support via the link in the pinned discussion. If it does work, have fun playing Sonic Generations!
