[SEMI-OUTDATED] Restore Pre-Patch Cutscenes & Textures (for now)
By Jesus "Ezekiel" Jesus
Remove the rushed AI upscaled cutscenes and replace them with the video files from the previous build (or other versions) and also delete textures that went through the AI upscale.

Small Note: The cutscenes shown in this guide are from the PS2 version which are lower quality, if you want the GC cutscenes, then check out Mona's guide for those and come back here for deleting textures.

UPDATE: As of 11/7/24, the cutscenes do not need to be replaced anymore as the upscaled cutscenes are now an optional setting.

Cutscene & Texture Replacement Pack
Step 1 - Download the "Pre-Patch Cutscenes & Textures" Mod

  • 1. Go to the ModDB page for the mod and click "Download Now", this is a fairly large file and may take some time to download.

If you just want the pre-patch textures, then follow this ModDB link instead and skip to the steps involving textures.

  • 2. Once it has finished downloading, extract the .ZIP file that you downloaded and go into the "killer7 Pre-Patch Cutscenes and Textures" folder (the _MACOSX folder and .DS_Store file are leftovers from compression).

Step 2 - Insert the New Files into the Game

  • 3. Go to Steam and right click on "killer7" and click "Browse Local Files".

If you plan on installing a different cutscene mod into the game, then you can skip Step 4 and ignore the cutscenes that come from my mod pack.

  • 4. Take the "Movie" folder from the extracted mod folder and drag it into the game's root folder, click "Replace all" when asked.

  • 5. Delete the "Replacement" folder from the game folder.

  • 6. Drag the "Replacement" folder from the mod folder into the game's folder.

Congrats! You have officially De-AI-upscaled (new word I just invented, I think) the game! However, you now also retain the good changes from the recent patch!

Small Reminder: Do NOT under any circumstance, attempt to verify the game's cache via Steam as it'll redownload the AI-upscaled content!
Replacing Textures (Manual)
The Easy Way

Do this if you want NO replacement textures at all.

  • 1. Go into killer7's folder.

  • 2. Right click on the "Replacement" and click "Delete".

You're done! Not only are all textures that were AI upscaled gone but even some of the enhanced textures from before the new build released! Don't worry, this doesn't break the game although a few elements will look slightly blurrier than they did before (such as Travis' shirts).

The Hard Way

Do this if you still want to still retain the enhanced textures from when the PC port first released but also want the AI upscaled textures gone.

  • 1. Go into killer7's folder.

  • 2. Go into the "Replacement" folder (where you also notice the folder having ballooned in size).

  • 3. Select the .DDS files as shown in the screenshots (Had to use Irfanview to display thumbnails as Windows wasn't displaying them for some reason), anything with a RED square around it is to be deleted and anything with a GREEN square is NOT to be deleted.

Note: There may either be some false positives or AI upscaled textures accidentally left in, please comment if you see either of those!

You're done! Now the AI upscaled textures are gone but you still retain the enhanced textures that have been in the PC port since day one, so Travis' shirts can still be read with super high fidelity.
[OUTDATED] Replacing Cutscenes (Manual)
As of 11/7/24, this is not needed anymore due to the AI upscaled cutscenes now being optional.

Step 1 - Downgrading the Game

  • 1. Go into Steam and right click on "killer7" and click Properties

  • 2. Go into the Betas tab and change the Beta from "None" to "Preview"

  • 3. Patiently wait for Steam to download the "Preview" version (which is actually closer to the previous build)

Note: If you do not want the QoL changes, then it can end here, but for those who do, continue on with the guide.

Step 2 - Copy the "Movie" Folder

  • 1. Open the game's folder by right clicking the game and clicking "Browse Local Files"

  • 2. Go into the "Movie" folder

  • 3. Notice how the video files are .OGV format, these are not compatible with the new build as it uses the .WEBM format instead, however there is a fairly easy way to convert the old cutscenes into .WEBM as this guide will elaborate further on.

  • 4. Copy the .OGV files somewhere where you'll easily remember where they are. (image below is just an example)

  • 5. After Step 4, you can safely update the game back to the new build and continue on with the guide.

Step 3 - Downloading, Configuring, & Using Handbrake

You may also use tools such as FFmpeg for this process if you prefer to use that, however I mainly have experience with Handbrake, thus I'm covering it in this guide. I do not recommend using an online "OGV to WEBM" converter due to their potential unpredictability and their lack of control and flexibility.

  • 1. Download Handbrake[handbrake.fr] (make sure you download the right version for your system)

  • 2. Install Handbrake, just click "Next" until it's fully installed.

  • 3. Launch Handbrake and drag your folder with the original cutscenes into it and wait for the program to scan all 42 files.

  • 4. Change format from "MP4" to "WebM"

  • 5. Go to the "Video" tab and change the Video Encoder and change it to "VP9" (not VP9 10-bit), if it wasn't selected after changing the format.

  • 6. To fix missing audio: Click "Save New Preset", this will take you to an "Add Preset" window, call this preset anything you like, and then click "Selection Behavior..." next to "Audio", then follow the settings in the screenshot, this will automatically switch the audio codec to "Vorbis" for all 42 video files, which in turn should fix the audio.

  • 7. Hover over "Add to Queue" and click the small arrow and click "Add All" (or use the keyboard shortcut as shown in the screenshot)

  • 7 1/2. If you get an error when clicking "Add All", then go to Tools > Preferences, then go to the "Output Files" tab, then make sure "Automatically name output files" is check and set the Default Path somewhere, go back to the interface and continue onto Step 7.

  • 8. Make sure you set up where you want the converted videos to go, preferably next to the original .OGV files, unless you don't mind having them go to the regular "Videos" folder.

  • 9. Engage the Queue! This will take some time, around 15 minutes to a few hours depending on your system.

Step 4 - Replacing the Files

  • 1. After converting the previous version's .OGV files to the now-compatible .WEBM files, go back to killer7's "Movie" folder, you'll see a bunch of .WEBM files... those are the ugly AI-upscaled cutscenes! Either back them up somewhere or delete them, but remember not to delete the .MRS files! (I recommend sorting the files by "Type")

  • 2. Take your now-converted original cutscenes and insert them into the "Movie" folder.

Boot the game up, load a save or begin anew and you should have the original cutscenes back! If you don't, refer back to this guide and make sure you didn't mess anything up... unless I messed something up, then leave a comment.

That's why I renamed it to "Semi-outdated", rather than just "Outdated", alongside putting up a link to download just the textures plus adding "Outdated" to parts that have to do with cutscenes.

They still havent fixed the textures yet like they promised. But hopefully that comes soon too.
I think the optional "remastered cutscenes" aren't AI anymore, though I can't really tell.

Everyone's rating of NIS America should be way down by default, they're kind of a garbage company. One of their localizations named a character Esty Dee as a joke for example, way back in the PS2 era they localized some JRPGs that were known for crashing at certain points. One game in particular, a turn-based game mind you, would crash only three turns into a mandatory boss fight, and their official response to that was to shrug their shoulders and say, "just kill the boss in three turns". Genuinely baffles me that anyone still trusts NIS America to do anything competent, to be honest.

Holy shit, THANK YOU!!!!!!! Stupid easy to follow along with/implement! Worked great, no fuss! My high rating of the Killer7 pc port still stands but my rating of NIS America is DOWN! WAAAAAAY DOWN!!! Leave it to the community to pick up the slack for big publishers...AS USUAL..........

You can and the textures are in a separate folder from the cutscenes.

I haven't actually bought Killer7 yet, I just wanna check how lazy I can be before I buy. Could I follow the ModDB link just for the prepatch textures, and then Mona's guide for the GC cutscenes? By which I mean, are the textures and the cutscenes stored in separate folders in the ModDB link?

Nice.
I have ported the GC cutscenes to the new version, so you don't need to use the bad pre-update cutscenes:
