WEBFISHING Guitar Tips and Tabs
By GammaBeta and 1 collaborators
WEBFISHING is a game with a guitar minigame. Unlike most games with a guitar minigame, WEBFISHING's guitar minigame lets you play almost anything. This guide is for people who want to play songs in that minigame without needing to puzzle out chord placements or specific fingering. There's also some tips about actually playing, and a brief outline of tabulature syntax in case anyone wants to make their own. (Please tell me if you do)

So you want to play guitar (in WEBFISHING)
First off, this guide does not explain the basic mechanics of the guitar minigame. Someone else already did a better job than I would. However, some clarification is necessary specifically about the hammer-down function.

In order to hammer down you first have to be playing a note (just like with real guitars). Then, while holding sprint, switch to another chord. The string that was playing will be automatically plucked again, though if you wait too long the volume gets turned down to roughly match the decay of the original note. As long as you don't let the note decay though, you can hammer down infinitely (unlike with real guitars).
If you hammer a note into a chord with that string muted, it will decay naturally as if you hadn't hammered at all. This makes playing songs that may have many hammer-downs sound a lot nicer than if it muted.
WEBFISHING does not differentiate between hammering down (for moving down the fretboard) and pulling off (for moving up). This is good news! It simplifies things quite a bit and makes movements that would be difficult on a real guitar a lot easier.
Tips
Like with real guitar, WEBFISHING guitar playing is best done using as many fingers as possible, with your dominant hand playing the strings (qwerty) and your non-dominant hand playing the chords (or in this case selecting them with 1-9). If your sprint is bound to shift, you'll probably use your right thumb to press the hammer-down button.

WEBFISHING guitar is played on a keyboard, making it difficult to use your thumb to "pluck" strings. However, because WEBFISHING guitar is played with a keyboard, it's possible to take advantage of techniques that anyone who knows how to use a keyboard will already have committed to muscle memory.

A good default resting position is with your dominant hand resting on 'wert' and your non-dominant on '2345'. This immediately gives you easy access to 6 buttons on each hand. Here's a diagram, with strings in blue, chords in green, and the buttons of the suggested default position darkened.

Do note that, like with real guitar, your finger positions are likely to change based on what song you're playing and where you are in it. If a plucking pattern is too difficult or awkward with this configuration, try something more specific to that pattern.

When playing tabs, it is helpful to have the tab visible in its entirety, or at least the body of it. I find it nice to play in windowed mode with a notepad window next to the game (this is also how I wrote all the tabs).

Chord changes can be tricky; if you change a chord at the same time as you pluck a note, it's possible the note gets plucked before the chord changes, resulting in a potentially misplayed note. To combat this it's best to change chords ahead of time. This takes practice to do well. Sometimes you have several beats to change chords, sometimes you have less than half a beat.

Pulling off a hammer-down can be tricky. Keep in mind that the hammer-down button only affects chord changes, meaning you can hold it while playing other notes. It can also be helpful to press the hammer key at the same time as the last note before a chord change is played—this way you can more easily stay in beat.

Sometimes when practicing or playing, if you hit certain notes in sequence, your character will play the first few notes of Megalovania on their own. There does not appear to be a way to disable this at the moment.
A Brief Explanation of WEBFISHING Tabulature Syntax
If you've played guitar, this probably looks very familiar to you. For the benefit of a general audience I'll explain it all anyway, but I'll try not to waste too much time.

Of note is that tabulatures don't represent some things at all, like tempo or rhythm, so usually it's helpful to at least know how the song sounds before trying to play it. This is true without using a tabulature as well.

Head
Normal stuff. Song name, original artist, and the tab author.

Chord Sheet
A numbered list of chord shapes for you to put into the fretboard before playing the song. 'x' represents a muted string, and the numbers are which fret should be held. I've represented frets past 9 with A=10, B=11 etc. It's important that each string is only represented by one character, thus the need for letters.

Body
The actual song! Sections may be separated by type, usually [Intro], [Outro], [Verse], [Chorus], [Bridge], [Refrain], and/or [Instrumental]. This is exclusively to make it more readable and is not always necessary. Apart from that, there's two ways I've represented fingerpicking patterns: plaintext and fretboard.
Plaintext Tab
This one's easy, just press the buttons in order. Chord changes don't affect rhythm unless they're hammered down, whitespace is there for legibility.
Fretboard Tab
This should look familiar if you've seen a tab before, or a fretboard. Instead of the string notes, the strings are marked by the corresponding keyboard button. This format takes up more space and is more visually noisy, but is able to represent simultaneous button presses, something hard to do with plaintext tabs.
Fretboard tabs also include plain chord progression without fingering, so if you already know which order to hit the strings in you can just focus on which chords you're playing.

Legend
Sometimes, if there's a symbol other than a number or one of the string letters, it can be hard to tell what it means. Having a legend circumvents that, and doesn't need to be included if the tab only uses basic notation.

sure, spoing! i suppose the best way to do that would be either here or through bsky dms [bsky.app]. i'll test them all out myself and if you're curious i have some tips for writing them
