UTOC Signature Bypass Patch
First we need to setup the Sparking Zero UTOC Signature Bypass Patch[ko-fi.com] by DeathChaos[ko-fi.com] in order to install mods.

  • Go to the download page linked above and click the 2nd link which should take you to the MEGA download, then click Download in the bottom right.

  • Once the download is finished, navigate to Sparking Zero in your Steam library.
Click the Gear Icon > Properties

  • In General > Launch Options, copy and paste
    WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dsound.dll=n,b" %command%

  • Then in Installed Files, click Browse towards the top right. This will open the location that Sparking Zero is installed at.

  • That will open the DRAGON BALL Sparking! ZERO folder.

  • Navigate to SparkingZERO > Binaries > Win64

  • Open up the Dragon Ball Sparking! Zero UTOC Signature Bypass.7z we downloaded earlier, then drag all the files into the Win64 folder.

If set up correctly, mods should now be good to go.
Unverum
I highly recommend that you install mods with the Unverum Mod Manager[github.com], instead of installing manually. If you don't wanna use Unverum and install mods manually, skip this entire section.

Unverum Setup
If you haven't already set up Unverum on your Steam Deck, use this Steam Guide.

Sparking Zero Mod Loader
After you have finished the Game Setup section in the Unverum Guide linked above, continue here.

  • First go to this link[www.nexusmods.com] and click Files.

  • Under Main Files, click Manual Download.

  • Click Slow Download, then open the file once the download finishes.

  • Inside your Unverum folder, there is a folder named Mods. Click it.

  • You should see folders named after games you have setup. Click Dragon Ball Sparking! Zero

  • This folder is where all of your mods are installed. Open the file SZModLoader-348-1-0-1-1732041325.zip that we installed earlier, then drag the folders SZModLib and ZeroSpark into the folder Dragon Ball Sparking! Zero.

(You can install any mod the same way just as a FYI.)

The mods will now appear in Unverum, check the box beside to enable them. Click Launch in the top right afterwards to test if your mods are working. I recommend booting from Steam instead of the Executable if you want working controls.

If all went well, you should now be able to mod SZ into your ideal BT4.
Modding SZ without Unverum
This section is only needed if you are not using Unverum.

Installing Mods that do not require SZ Mod Loader
  • After you download a mod of your choice, navigate to your game folder. You can find this by using Browse Files as shown earlier in this Guide.

  • Once there, find the Paks folder by going to
    SparkingZERO > Content > Paks

  • Once in the Paks folder, Right Click in a empty place > Create New > Folder
    then name that folder ~mods

  • Now simply dump any mods you want in the ~mods folder.

If all went well, mods should appear in-game.

Installing Mods that require Sparking Zero Mod Loader
The Sparking Zero Mod Loader[www.nexusmods.com] is technically optional, but needed for mods like Extra Outfits[gamebanana.com] by Saitsu[www.patreon.com] and many others to work.

  • Got to the download page linked above and click Files.

  • Under Main Files, click Manual Download.

  • Click Slow Download, then open the file once the download finishes.

  • Navigate to your game folder. You can find this by using Browse Files as shown earlier in this Guide.

  • Open the folder SparkingZERO, then drag the Mods folder from SZModLoader-348-1-0-0-1731976343.zip into there.

Now place the folder of any mod requiring SZ Mod Loader in the Mods folder you just created, and it should work.

This is not the ~mods folder that we created earlier. It is a different folder named Mods in a different place. Do not put your SZ MOD Loader Mods into ~mods.

I'm sharing a post from Reddit that helped with finding the executable.

"I would like to add that Home is /home/<username>, and that .steam is a hidden folder so it might not show if hidden files are not shown. If hidden files don't show, either find an option to show them in a menu, or use the keyboard shortcut ctrl+h.

So, if your username would be "deck", then it's /home/deck/.steam/steam/steamapps/common, or home -> deck -> .steam -> steam -> steamapps -> common"

Hope this helps. It did for me.

I don't know why Steam thinks "SparkingZero.exe" is a website but please ignore that link.

By file for sz do you mean like SparkingZero.exe? Did you enable Show dot files ? The steps on how are shown under the Unverum Prerequisites section from the Unverum Guide.

You can set an override in two ways, one is to run the winecfg in the right prefix (with stuff like protontricks), or setting an environment variable at the launch command via Steam.

I have no idea why "it cannot find the launch option" but you can try enabling dsound via protontricks instead, which is the exact same process shown under the "Costume Patcher fix" section of the Unverum Guide.
(Obviously Sparking Zero doesn't have a costume patcher, but that section shows you how to override dsound.dll in protontricks without using the Steam Launch Options.)
