How to actually play Half-Life 2 MMod on Linux (updated for newest version)
Av skinwalker (they/them)
Hi! So, if you're here you probably followed a guide for installing Half-Life 2 MMod on Linux that had you do something like set Half-Life 2 and Source SDK to run the Windows version with Proton and install it as a regular sourcemod. That never worked for me for some reason. So instead, here's what I did to make this work.

Step 1: Install Half-Life 2
Post-Anniversary (because I wrote this guide in October) step 1.5: Right-click on Half-Life 2, open the properties panel, click "betas" and set your beta participation to "steam_legacy" or whatever it's called to downgrade to the pre-anniversary build.
Post-Anniversary Optional Step 1.75: Install Half-Life 2 Episode 1 and 2 from the "Tools" section of your library, do the same things to it as the base game.
Step 2: Open the properties panel for the game, click "compatibility" and set it to use the Proton Experimental compatibility layer.
Step 3: Download the latest version of Half-Life 2 MMod from ModDB
Step 4: Open the file location of Half-Life 2 (however you do that I'm not a babysitter, though if you're using the native version this should be at /home/(your username)/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Half-Life 2)
Step 4: Copy HL2MMod, HL2MMod_HL2, HL2MMod_EP1, and HL2MMod_EP2 from the Half-Life 2 MMod archive to the Half-Life 2 folder (don't copy it into the hl2 folder, copy it into the folder in your steamapps named "Half-Life 2")
Step 5: Go back into Steam, right click on Half-Life 2, then in the launch options field add the argument "-game HL2MMod_HL2".
Post-Anniversary Step 5.5: If you want to launch the MMod version of the Episodes, add the launch option "-game HL2MMod_EPx" with x being the episode number on whichever episode you want to play.
Step 6: Click play and MMod should launch.
This also works on Windows with... "Non-Steam" copies of Half-Life 2, though you'd need to use a Batch script to launch the game that way.

nobody had written yet, I tried it on a whim, remembering that it worked for "non-steam" copies of Half-Life 2 on Windows. I'm glad this guide's helping some people though.

this is awesome, still works with the old version! you can roll back your version in the beta versions tab.
