Garry's Mod Anti-Crash Performance Guide
Por Blue Balenciagas
This guide will explain how to prevent disconnections and lag in GMOD and how to run it as smoothly as possible. We'll go through several steps to ensure the game runs smoothly for you, minimizing crashes and reducing lag. Keep in mind, GMod is an old game running on an outdated engine, and when a server is often maxed out. It takes time to fully load in, and the game is running as efficiently as possible. When you experience lag or disconnects, it's not the server's fault—it’s a limitation of the game engine, and there’s not much they can do to improve that.

1. Unsubscribe from Private Addons
To boost your performance, unsubscribe from all private addons that you no longer use. This clears unnecessary data and speeds up loading. Make sure to clean out all residual files as well.

2. Install the Collection of The Server You're Playing
After cleaning up your private addons, subscribe your server's addon collection. We're using Mutiny for this guide. This ensures you have all the necessary content for the server.

3. Switch to 64-bit (x86-64) Version of GMod
Running Garry’s Mod on the 64-bit version improves performance on modern systems:

1. Right-click on Garry's Mod in your Steam library.
2. Select Properties > Betas.
3. In the first option, 'Beta Participation,' select x86-64 - Chromium + 64-bit binaries.
4. When launching the game, always choose the 64-bit option when prompted.

4. Set High Priority in Task Manager
To give GMod more system resources:

Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc).
Go to the Details tab.
Find gmod.exe, right-click it, and select Set Priority.
Change it to High (but not Realtime).

This ensures smoother performance without overloading your system.

5. Use a Wired Connection
Always use a wired internet connection when playing. A stable connection reduces the chances of network lag and disconnections.
6. Handling Freezing During Load In-Game
It’s normal to experience freezing when joining the server. Here's how to manage it:

  • When you freeze, press and hold Tab to open the player list.
  • If the player count shows 30-40 players, it means you’re still loading.
  • Wait until the player count updates to the full number before moving; the freezing should stop once you’re fully loaded.

Patience is key here—it can take a few moments to load all the players and assets.

7. Set Launch Options
To optimize GMod even more, follow these steps:

  • Right-click Garry’s Mod in Steam, select Properties > General.
  • In the Launch Options section, paste the following:

+exec autoexec.cfg -novid -nojoy -nosteamcontroller -particles 1 -precachefontchars +mat_dxlevel 100

These options disable unnecessary features and force the game to run in DirectX 10, giving you a performance boost.

8. Edit Autoexec.cfg for Performance
Further tweak GMod by editing the autoexec.cfg file:

  • In Steam, right-click Garry’s Mod, select Properties > Installed Files > Browse.
  • Open the garrysmod folder, then navigate to cfg.
  • Find autoexec.cfg, right-click it, and open with Notepad.
  • Paste the following into the file:

gmod_mcore_test 1
mat_queue_mode 2
cl_threaded_client_leaf_system 1
r_threaded_client_shadow_manager 1
r_threaded_particles 1
r_threaded_renderables 1
r_queued_ropes 1
studio_queue_mode 1
mat_specular 1
r_ForceWaterLeaf 1
r_occlusion 1
r_fastzreject 1
mat_tonemapping_occlusion_use_stencil 0
r_norefresh 1
r_pixelfog 1
mod_offline_hdr_switch 1
mat_requires_rt_alloc_first 0
sys_minidumpspewlines 0
sv_logdownloadlist 0
mat_forcehardwaresync 1
mat_managedtextures 0
mat_queue_mode -1
mat_bufferprimitives 1
cl_always_flush_models 0
lzma_persistent_buffer 1

Some of these commands may be outdated, but they shouldn't cause harm if kept in. These settings optimize various graphical processes for better performance.

9. Adjust Graphics Settings
For players with serious FPS issues:

  • Set graphics settings to the lowest possible values.
  • Lower the resolution to 900p for a significant FPS boost.
  • If you need to keep Windowed Fullscreen, manually adjust your Windows resolution to match 900p.

Keeping the game in Windowed Fullscreen prevents crashes when alt-tabbing. Running it in Full Screen mode can cause timeouts if you tab out.
Conclusion & Tips & Tricks
Run GMod on an SSD: If possible, this significantly improves loading times, especially when joining a large server like Mutiny.

Conclusion

By following this guide, you should see a noticeable improvement in your FPS and fewer disconnections while playing on the Mutiny server. GMod’s older engine comes with its limitations, but these steps will help you get the most out of your game.

It's also worth noting that GMod tends to perform better on Intel processors compared to AMD, and it relies more on the CPU than the GPU. Sometimes, upgrading to a better processor is the only way to achieve a significant performance boost.
