How to get OpenXR to work

This guide will show you how to enable OpenXR on various VR headsets for playing The First Settlement VR.

Starting the Game Using OpenXR Runtime

1. Meta Quest Link as OpenXR Runtime:

• Connect your headset via Meta Quest Link.
  
• Start the game directly from Steam through your headset.

2. SteamVR as OpenXR Runtime:

• Connect to SteamVR using your headset.
  
• Start the game from SteamVR.

3. PimaxXR as OpenXR Runtime:

• Launch your game directly from the client. Avoid selecting SteamVR if given the option.

Valve Index Headsets

1. Open SteamVR on your desktop.

2. Go to "Settings" > "Developer" (make sure to enable Advanced settings).

3. Ensure that the current OpenXR runtime is set to SteamVR.

4. Start the game directly from the SteamVR app through your headset.

Meta Headsets

1. Open Meta Quest Link on your desktop.

2. Go to "Settings" > "General" and navigate to the OpenXR-Runtime section.

3. Ensure that the current OpenXR runtime is set to Meta Quest Link.

4. Connect your headset via Meta Quest Link.

5. Start the game by pressing the "Play" button in Steam.

Pimax Crystal Headsets

Follow these steps to enable OpenXR on your Pimax headset (Crystal and 8KX):

1. Install Required Software:

• Pimax PC Client: Download and install the Pimax PC Client from Pimax Downloads & Manuals[pimax.com]. This client is used to configure headset settings and select the correct runtime.
  
• PimaxXR: Download PimaxXR from GitHub[github.com]. This Windows OpenXR runtime lets you run OpenXR applications without using SteamVR.
  Tip: Enable eye-tracking in PimaxXR if you want to use this feature—it’s disabled by default.
  
• OpenXR Toolkit: Download the OpenXR Toolkit from here[mbucchia.github.io]. This suite provides useful enhancements like render upscaling, sharpening, and foveated rendering.
  
• OpenComposite: Download OpenComposite from GitLab[gitlab.com]. OpenComposite forwards OpenVR calls directly to the OpenXR runtime, bypassing SteamVR.

2. Setup and Configuration:

• Install all the above software.
  
• In the Pimax PC Client, ensure that PimaxXR is selected as your OpenXR runtime and that OpenComposite is properly configured.
  
• Launch your game directly from the client. Avoid selecting SteamVR if given the option.
  
• If the game initially loads without VR, press Shift+Tab to enable VR mode.
  
• Press Control+Up (or your configured hotkey) to open the in-game menu. From there, adjust settings—reduce sharpness and adjust the size if needed.
  
• Finally, in the OpenXR System tab, set Override Resolution to Yes.
