A Complete Hillbilly Guide for Dead by Daylight
By kay
Introduction
Hillbilly is a high-speed killer who excels in map mobility and can one-hit down survivors using his chainsaw. However, he is one of the most difficult killers to master, requiring precision, map knowledge, and practice. This guide will take you through everything you need to know, from basic setup, mechanics, and perk builds, to advanced techniques and add-ons, allowing you to improve as a Hillbilly player.

Basic Setup & Sensitivity Adjustment
Before diving into gameplay, it's essential to optimize your control settings for smoother and more precise play. One of the first things you should do is rebind your movement keys to help with turning during chainsaw sprints or curving.

Rebind Q and E to Left and Right in the Options. This makes turning while sprinting much easier, allowing for more accurate chainsaw control.
Maximize your sensitivity to 100% on controller, even if on KB&M. This is a Hillbilly-specific tip because he is the only killer affected by this setting.

Chainsaw Mechanics
Hillbilly’s chainsaw is used for two primary functions: map mobility and instant-downs. Though incredibly powerful, it is also tricky to master.

Map Mobility
Hillbilly can use his chainsaw sprint to quickly traverse large portions of the map, catching survivors off-guard. The first second of the sprint offers a higher turn rate, which is ideal for making sharp turns or navigating through obstacles. Use this early turn speed to adjust your path and correct your trajectory.
Tip: Practice short chainsaw sprints in areas with fewer obstacles to get used to turning, and gradually move to more confined spaces as you improve.

Chainsaw as a Weapon
While Hillbilly's chainsaw can instantly down survivors, using it in chases requires careful decision-making.
Pre-charge your chainsaw if you see a survivor running to a pallet. This pressures them into making a fast decision: either drop the pallet early or get downed.

Scenarios:
Survivor near a window: Cancel your chainsaw and go for an M1 hit instead. The risk of missing with the chainsaw is high around windows.
Survivor at a pallet: If they hesitate to drop the pallet, step back, charge the chainsaw, and break it with M2. Use the LoPro Chains add-on to ignore the pallet stun and continue pursuing.
Survivor in open ground: If they don’t juke, you can easily land a chainsaw hit. However, experienced survivors will try to get into your blind spot. Instead of wildly spinning your camera, focus on their legs and use WASD movements to adjust your position. Don’t overcompensate with camera movement — small adjustments in positioning can lead to a chainsaw hit.

Map Awareness & Dependency
Hillbilly's performance greatly depends on the map. Open maps, like Coldwind Farm or Autohaven Wreckers, offer the most freedom to utilize his chainsaw sprint for long-distance hits. Meanwhile, tight, indoor maps like Léry's Memorial Institute or The Game pose a challenge because of their many walls and obstacles, which make curving and turning harder. As you learn Hillbilly, you’ll develop a sense of which maps favor his abilities and which ones don’t.

Best Perk Builds
Hillbilly works best with perks that amplify his ability to control generators, limit survivor options, and punish mistakes. Below are some of the best perk builds, including both personal preferences and community-recommended setups.

Personal Winning Build
This build focuses on aggressive generator control, chase pressure, and map awareness.

Pop Goes the Weasel – After hooking a survivor, the next generator you kick instantly loses 25% of its progress.
Scourge Hook: Pain Resonance – Upon hooking a survivor on a Scourge Hook, the generator with the most progress explodes and loses 15% progress.
Barbeque & Chilli – After hooking a survivor, see the auras of survivors outside of 40m for 4 seconds, and gain bonus Bloodpoints.
Grim Embrace – After hooking all four survivors once, all generators are blocked for 30 seconds.
This setup allows you to pressure survivors by regressing generators, while Barbeque & Chilli gives crucial information for quickly chasing down survivors with your chainsaw sprint.

Otzdarva's Recommended Builds
These builds are used by the popular streamer Otzdarva, focusing on different strengths:

Generic Build:
Pop Goes the Weasel, Pain Resonance, Barbeque & Chilli, Bamboozle (Blocks windows after vaulting, making loops easier to manage).
Well-rounded Build:
Corrupt Intervention (Blocks the three furthest generators at the start), Deadlock (After a generator is completed, the next generator with the most progress is blocked), Tinkerer (Undetectable status when a generator is 70% complete), Bamboozle.
Simple Build:
Lethal Pursuer (See survivor auras at the start of the match), Deadlock, Enduring (Reduces stun duration from pallets), Spirit Fury (After breaking two pallets, the next one that hits you automatically breaks).
Basic Perks Build:
Enduring, Tinkerer, Bitter Murmur (See auras of survivors when a generator is completed), Agitation (Increased movement speed while carrying survivors).

Best Add-ons for Hillbilly
Hillbilly is heavily dependent on add-ons to maximize his chainsaw’s effectiveness, especially for curving and sprint control. Below are the best add-ons to consider, organized by tier.

S-Tier Add-ons:
LoPro Chains
Iridescent Engravings
A-Tier Add-ons:
Spiked Boots
The Thompson’s Mix
Tuned Carburetor
Greased Throttle
Begrimed Chains
B-Tier Add-ons:
Low Kickback Chains
Apex Muffler
Off-Brand Motor Oil
Steel Toe Boots
C-Tier Add-ons:
High-Speed Idler
Thermal Casing
D-Tier Add-ons:
Cracked Primer Bulb

Advanced Playstyle Tips
Map Awareness: Use the chainsaw sprint not just to chase but also to patrol generators quickly. Combine perks like Barbeque & Chilli or Tinkerer to help track survivors at a distance.
Curving with Chainsaw: Hillbilly’s ability to curve around objects makes him unique. Engravings add-ons will help you maximize curving potential. Practice turning in open spaces and work up to more complex environments.
Don’t Force Chainsaw Hits: Sometimes it’s better to go for a basic M1 attack instead of trying to land a chainsaw hit, especially in tight or indoor maps. Use the chainsaw when the terrain is in your favor, like open ground or linear corridors.

Conclusion
Hillbilly is a highly rewarding killer to master, offering both incredible map control and lethal chase potential. However, he is not easy to play. It takes time, patience, and practice to fully understand how to maximize his chainsaw's potential.
