Campaign
Every achievement in this section is necessary for completing the campaign.

Western Halls

Speak Friend - Discover the Elven Quarter. After speaking to Aric, the bird and exploring the starting area you'll find a hallway with wooden planks. Destroy them and you'll find the area of interest.

Miner's Helper - Craft a Steel Pickaxe. Crafted at the Great Forge of Narvi in the Elven Quarter.

Delving Onward - Enter the Mines of Moria. You'll need to craft a Steel Pickaxe to enter. See 'Crafting' section for crafting instructions.

Line of Azog, Ended - Defeat Bolgath. Found after the Orctown in the Mines of Moria. The strategy is to use the Maul, greatsword and greataxe. Bring some healing items (dried fruit?). There will be alot of aggs that spawn, focus on the boss.

Lower Depths

To the Mountain's Roots - Enter the Lower Depths. After exploring for a bit, you'll find a blue area on the map. In that location there is a big crane that needs to be repaired. You'll need 15 Black Diamonds, 20 Elven Wood, and 30 Natural Fibers. There are a couple of Map stones to repair so it is recommended to bring a couple extra Black Diamonds.

Remains To Be Seen - Enter the Tomb. Exploring the depths you'll find a body of water. This is where you'll fight a boss in order to safely cross. This boss can only be hurt by the First Age Crossbow, crafted at a Workbench. Simply shoot the Watcher in each of its eyes in order to knock out it's health bar and bring a weapon to deal with the waves of Orcs and Goblins that spawn. After you fight the boss you can repair the pipes, and drain the lever to unlock the next area.

Eastern Slopes

Risk a Little Real Light - Enter Dwarrowdelf. Similar to the Lower Depths you'll need to craft a bridge with Black Diamonds, Granite and other resources.

False King, Deposed - Defeat the Troll King. Found in the green part of the Upper City/Dwarrowdelf. Tier 4 mace is recommended

Baruk Khazâd -Craft Durin's Axe. Recipe pieces are randomized but one will be found in the starting area and another after you fight Bolgakh. The 4th fragment in dwarreldelf might be not accessible without destroying the buildings. This goes both ways (up/down), some people find a hidden cellar with the fragment, some find an attic that has not stairs that connect it with the rest of the building.

???

A Memory of this Place - Enter the Highway. After crafting Durin's Axe (recipe below) you can destroy the weird purple rock walls all throughout the map.

Caradhras The Cruel - Enter the Angry Caverns. It's at the end of Durin's highway.

Shadow's Bane - Craft the Dragon Spear at the Great Mithril Forge. You get the Mithril from the deep holes in the angry caverns.

Darkness Is Passing - Defeat the Shadow Dragon. The boss has 3 main phases. Don't bother attacking the dragon directly until you see the health bar. The first phase involves fighting a lot of shadow-orcs and wolves while the dragon shoots shadow balls at you. You have to get the dragon to bow up all the columns to get to the next phase. You can teleport back
to repair your armor in between phases. The second area is a joke where the boss talks at you and you kill a couple of fell-beases while you climb. The dragon spear does crazy damage to them. for the last phase you do the column thing again except you need to destroy them. Then you get the health bar and you can kill it.
.

For some reason the final achievement is slightly before the final cutscene. Go to the Eastern Stairs and build the final bridge.

FAQ
Q: Should I really keep all of these seemingly worthless items?

A: Yes, all items have some use, even if you don't know it yet. Some early game throwaway items become critical bottlenecks for crafting tier IV and V items.

Q: Do I need to bother rebuilding these statues?

A: Yes, statues are one way you unlock new recipes. And if the statue is asking you to sing to it, you better do it. It's critical to story progression in some areas.

Q: Do I need to bother with these carvings?

A: Yes, carvings are one way you unlock new recipes. You can get some pretty powerful gear from the carvings after you collect them all for a given area.

Q: What does 'cold' and 'bone-cold' mean?

A: Being cold, or bone cold, increases your stamina cost for actions and means you get tired and exhausted faster. This can leave you vulnerable to attack.

Q: What does stamina do? Is it important?

A: Stamina is crucial for defending yourself during raids and attacks. I'd date to say that I'd rather be at 5% HP and max stamina than the other way around during a raid.

Q: What do these ranger pages do?

A: You use the ranger pages to complete the journals and get beer recipes.

Q: What does food do?

A: Food sustains you. Advanced foods can also improve your heath and stamina. Food can take the form of meals or rations. Meals are more advanced but require furnishings in your base to make. Meals give bonuses depending on the time of day.

Build an oven at your base as soon as you can. Ovens cook rations that can be eaten while adventuring, to restore health without a heath and meal table.

Q: What does ale do?

A: Ale is just as important as food. Make brew kettles to brew it, and flaks to carry it with away from base. Drink evening ale before bed to get an extra buff waking up.

Q: How do I kill the really strong enemies?

A: Dodge! Dip! Dive! Duck! and Dodge!.

Most enemies have highly telegraphed attacks. You can learn these easily and repairing your armor after every fight will become a thing of the past. Lower tier enemies can be defended with a simple shield dodge but stronger ones might need rolls. Stamina management is everything here. Depending on the enemy and the attack it might be best to roll into/away/side-to-side. Click carefully, it is easy to get carried away and get locked into a 3 part attack which will cause you to get hit.

Trolls have a couple of attacks. One attack is a fast left/right slash of their club. This one you can roll into/away to avoid. If you roll side-to-side it'll get you on the back swing. Another is a slower slam move that reaches further out. You can toll side-to-side to avoid it but if you roll too early it will get you. Also they throw rocks but these are easy to avoid.

Drakes can be tricky as they move faster than the game's auto targeting can keep up with. Bludgeon and two handed weapons do a bit better than axes and swords. Hit once or maybe twice at a time and don't get carried away with a combo. Most of the attacks can be avoided by rolling into the drake but watch out for the tail spin move.

Q: What weapon(s) should I use?

A: Axes and swords are good against non-armored or light-armored enemies like orcs, wolves, and goblins, mattocks and mauls are for breaking armored/big enemies like trolls, drakes, bosses. Carry at least 2 weapons, one for dealing with scores of orcs and one for big enemies (bosses, trolls, drakes). Usually a sword and a maul.

Q: According to the map I've explored everything but I still have missing stuff?

A: Some areas have section you can go further up/down to explore more.

Q: How do I build a base?

A: Always put a door on your base, don’t just leave a hole in your wall. If you add multiple doors, keep them close together for raids. Doors will stop patrolling enemies walking in or attacking enemies charging in.they will also slow down besieging enemies. Enemies who attack your base will focus on your doors first. So be ready to defend them.

Don’t put windows on the ground floor, enemies patrolling near by can see through windows and will attack if they see you.

Q: What gear should I bring for exploring?
  • A pickaxe (duh)
  • A hammer
  • A melee weapon
  • Shield if weapon is one handed
  • 30-60 stone (granite and adamantite too later)
  • 30+ wood scraps
  • Stack of basic healing food like dried fruit, salted meat or honey cakes
  • Complex food items like lembas as well
  • Ranger pages and muz carvings for current area if they haven't been complete yet

Q: Should I bother with the sandbox mode or should I stick to campaign?

A: While campaign is recommended for beginners, there are some exclusive items and biomes that can only be found in the sandbox mode. If that sounds like fun then give it a shot.
Tips and Tricks
The legendary forges that are in the world don't require coal/heat to smelt (exception being steel since it's in the base recipe). This is especially good for early gameplay as the one in the Elven quarters is super early and easy to get to.

Sometimes the fastest (and most fun) way to collect early game resources is to get a bear to chase you around trees and bases and collect all the stuff they destroy.

You can juggle the forge parts Halo CE flag style by picking them up and then switching to a weapon quickly. If you do it really fast you can throw it all the way across the room.

You can destroy the hearths, map stones, forges and other furnishings you rebuilt to recover all of the resources inside. For example you can turn 1 black diamond needed to restore a map-stone into 3 and some leftover stone.

Early in the game carry 5 iron bars, stone, wood, coal and Lots of metal scraps. You can then build a repair station in your camp. Being able to drop a camp hearth wherever you are so you can repair your armor and weapons while away from base is game changing.

For long expeditions (later in the game) one might consider bringing 3 black diamonds, extra stone and coal for a basic camp hearth and map stone.

Trolls can be killed by sunlight just like in the books/movies.You get bonus rewards too.

I'm new to this game, just bought today in hopes to play online co-op with another Twitch streamer. Despite restarting the game, verifying the files, and making sure no firewall or VPN was blocking access, we were both unable to join eachother's newly created world. It would find the player hosting via the code, but when clicking join it would pause for 20 seconds then give the error: "could not join game. Please check the Invite Code and try again." Any suggestions on how to fix? We are both playing from PC on Steam. Thanks

First of all thank you for making the guide. It has helped alot on my playthrough so far.

But I do have a question. Ive heard that if you go trough the dimrill gate to finish the game / start the gimli scene, you wont be able to get back into the mines. Well you can go back into them but apparantly not into the starting area (where i have my base). Is that correct? I want to finish the storyline and then i also wanted to restore some of the houses in moria. So is it true that i wont have full acces to the mines after completing the story? And if that is true which areas are locked and which ones are still accessible? Can anybody who finished the game already help me out here?

Hello, I didn't see any ring dropped after killing the Shadow Dragon, but I saw a ring dropped in other walkthrough videos. Are there any specific conditions for this?

Please help, I couldn't get the "Dimrill Weaponcraft" and "Suit Up" despite having crafted all of the required equipment multiple times and already finished the campaign.
