Detention
Detention is a core game mechanic of Baldi's Basics Plus.

How do you get sent there? Break any rule in front of Principal of the Thing. These rules include
Running
Entering faculty only rooms
Drinking (using BSODA)
Escaping Detention
Using lockers (Blue or Storage).
Being in school after hours (after the floor timer runs out/in the Stealthy Challenge)

There are also 2other rules that normally do not apply to the player. These are
Bullying (only for It's a Bully) and Breaking the fourth wall (a joke, maybe applies to NULL).

If any of the rules are broken by the player within Principal of the Thing's line of sight, he will call the player out for the rule they broke and give chase. The Principal pursues the player at a speed slightly faster than their running speed, meaning that once he's after you, he will most likely catch you in the end.

Once you are caught, you are sent to the center of the Principal's Office, where he chastises you and locks you in for a specific amount of time. The time locked in his office varies from 15 to 99 seconds, depending on the amount of times you have gotten detention previously. Detention also alerts Baldi with a very high noise value and clears his Sound Queue. If you don't know what that means, just know that once you get Detention, Baldi is coming for you.

So how do you negate the downsides of Detention?
How to Survive - Items
Taking a look at your inventory, you find that you are quite well-equipped with items that can help you survive the detriments of Detention. But hold on a minute - what does this mean? What items can help negate/remove the risk of Detention?

Let's start with a very straightforward one: Principal's Keys. Found in a variety of different places ranging from Classrooms to Faculty rooms, Principal's Keys are a one-use item that allow you to unlock any locked standard door (not swinging or auto!). This is useful in the case of Chalkes, Mrs. Pomp, and, you guessed it, Detention. Once the door is unlocked, you can move in and out of the Detention room freely. However, keep in mind that escaping Detention is a rule break, and if the Principal sees you outside the Detention room while still having seconds on the clock, he'll send you right back, this time with MORE time. Oh, and he'll lock the door again too.

Moving on to another quite obvious one: Baldi's Least Favorite Tape (formally Baldi Anti Hearing and Disorienting Tape). Considering the Tape Player is found within the Principal's Office itself, it's safe to assume the Tape is meant to be used primarily during Detention. When the Tape in engaged, it emits a high-pitched noise that has three effects: one, it makes Baldi forget every noise he last heard, two, it prevents him from hearing any other sounds for the duration of the Tape, and three, it makes ALL NPCs flee from, including Baldi. The Tape lasts 30 seconds, meaning that if you got ≤30 seconds of Detention, you're home free. However, if you happened to get ≥30 seconds, don't sweat! The Tape will drive Baldi far away and make him forget you were ever in Detention, meaning that with a little luck you'll still be fine.

A very versatile item that can be used in Detention is the Dirty Chalk Eraser. The Dirty Chalk Eraser, upon usage, creates a thick dust cloud that prevents any character from seeing through it. When used, you may hide within that cloud to make yourself invisible (from V0.6 onwards, invisibility is indicated by a darkening of the HUD). If Baldi happens to be close, a Dirty Chalk Eraser can be used to hide yourself from him. However, ensure that you pick a spot to hide away from the door and center of the room, as when Baldi comes in the room he will move from the door to the center of the room and then back to the door. Keep in mind that while invisible you are NOT invincible! (This item is actually also helpful in escaping Detention - more on that in the Characters section of this guide!)

And now for one of the most useful ways to escape Detention, we have the Portal Poster. The Portal Poster is a very...niche item. Useful only under very specific circumstances, it is used to create a passageway straight through a solid wall only if there are valid spaces on either side of that wall and there are no obstructions on either side. It cannot be used on windows. Once placed, you can navigate freely through it without the use of any other items. It is the most useful item to consistently escape Detention, as the Portal Poster will never expire/be taken down, so you can reuse it over and over again if ever you need to escape. Paired with Baldi's Least Favorite Tape to drive Baldi and the Principal away, and you, my friend, have a one-way ticket to freedom.

The Dangerous Teleporter (formerly the Teleportation Teleporter) is as it's name implies: Dangerous. As its description in Johnny's Store points out, "it could take you to safety or certain doom!" Upon usage, it teleports the user (you) around the school randomly until eventually settling in one location. You can use this item to escape Detention, although it should be more of a second-to-last resort than your go-to option. (For the true last resort, see "An Apple for Baldi")

Moving to a less useful alternative if you don't have any of the above items, we have the WD-NoSquee. Only applicable in V0.6 or higher, the WD-NoSquee creates a no-noise zone 5 tiles long and wide. Within this zone, EVERY noise is silenced, including Detention. NoSquee does require a little setup to work for Detention, however. Before being sent to Detention you must use it in the Principal's Office, then once you are sent there no noise will be made and Baldi will be none the wiser as to where you are. Keep in mind that the NoSquee's no-noise zone only lasts 5 minutes, meaning that once it wears off, it's back to square one with Detention.

We are now moving into the territory of the Alarm Clock, a less useful way to save yourself. The Alarm Clock has a very simple mechanic. Used to draw Baldi to a specific location, once placed down you can configure the time until it goes off. The times available are 15, 30, 45, or 60 seconds. When the Alarm Clock starts ringing after the allocated time is up, it produces a noise higher than that of Detention, meaning that if placed far enough away can draw Baldi far away from Detention. Keep in mind, however, that a recent update made it so that Detention makes Baldi forget every other noise made before it, meaning that if the Alarm Clock goes off before getting Detention, it becomes useless. Good planning is necessary to use the Alarm Clock to its fullest potential.

The Faculty Nametag is useful in many situations - Detention is normally not one of those. Although you won't get in trouble for breaking any rules in front of the Principal while wearing it, once the Principal is after you for breaking a rule, putting on the nametag won't stop him from punishing you. However, if you happen to have a nametag on hand once you get Detention, it is possible to use it to escape. When the Principal leaves the office after chastising you, he briefly opens the door before shutting it very quickly behind him. However, that little window is all you need. Normally, squeezing through the door as the Principal leaves will simply result in you instantly getting caught and sent back to Detention, however if you have a Faculty Nametag equipped and you manage to squeeze through the door before it closes, the Principal won't chastise you for escaping. The Nametag is also useful for when you've escaped Detention using any of the above methods (Keys, Poster, Teleporter), as while wearing it the Principal will not call you out for escaping.

Last but not least, we have An Apple for Baldi. As mentioned in the "Dangerous Teleporter" section, this is the true last resort, as it is possibly the most precious item in the entire game. If an Apple is present in your inventory, upon contact with Baldi the game will not end but Baldi will instead take the Apple from you. He will then proceed to thank you and eat it for 15 seconds, letting you escape and essentially acting as a second life. If you have no other defensive items left, letting Baldi take an Apple will distract him and allow you to escape. But wait! I thought you said you didn't have any other items left! So how is it that you can escape Detention? Well, that brings us to...
How to Survive - Characters
There are actually a handful of characters in-game that can aid you in escaping Detention - and ONLY escaping, as unfortunately no character exists that negates the audio aspect of Detention. These characters are as follows:

Baldi - No, I'm not kidding. Baldi, like other members of Faculty, will unlock any locked doors he goes through. This is why I mentioned that the Dirty Chalk Eraser could be key to escaping Detention: once Baldi comes into the room, doesn't see you hiding in a chalk cloud, and leaves, he also leaves the door unlocked behind him, allowing you to make a quick escape. This is also the case with an Apple. Alternatively, if Baldi isn't that fast yet, you can attempt to sidestep him and escape without an item.

Dr. Reflex - Like other members of Faculty, he unlocks any locked doors he goes through. If he happens to be near the Detention room and sees you before you get Detention, he'll come charging in to give you a reflex test, unlocking the locked door in the process. An alternative strategy is to anger him - he'll retrieve his percussion hammer and attempt to squish you. While angered, he can hear all sounds made by the player just like Baldi, meaning that he'll come for you in Detention, unlocking the door in the process. The downside is that you'll inevitably be squished, limiting what you can do.

Mrs. Pomp - Like other members of Faculty, she unlocks any locked doors she goes through. However, you must get extremely lucky to get her to unlock the Principal's Office door. She must be looking to invite you to her class, she must be near the Principal's Office when you get Detention, and she must be right outside the door when the Principal leaves, close enough to see you through the door for the split second the Principal opens it. If the stars align, Mrs. Pomp will come charging through the door to remind you to be at her next class, unlocking the door in the process.

Principal of the Thing - Yes, I'm serious again. You'd really think he'd be the last person to help you escape. Like other members of Faculty, he unlocks any locked doors he goes through. However, in the case of Detention, he simply shuts and locks the door behind him again unlike other members of Faculty. However, paired with a Faculty Nametag, it is possible to squeeze out of Detention without getting sent back.

This is also a good time to mention an item I neglected from the previous section: the Principal Whistle. The main reason I decided against grouping this item in with the rest is simply because it required information gathered further down the guide and another item to be a feasible way to escape - the Faculty Nametag. The Principal Whistle, when used, calls the Principal to your location. In the case of Detention, when the Principal comes charging in the door, he again opens it for a split second. Paired with a Faculty Nametag, you can slip out during that time and not get caught.

Now that we're done with the Faculty Members, let's look at the remaining characters:

1st Prize - This requires a little luck and setup. In order to use 1st Prize to escape Detention, you must first ensure the Principal's Office has windows, and then ensure that at least one of those windows is pointing down a moderately long hallway. Once you are sure of these two facts, you must then lure 1st Prize to the end of that moderately long hallway and let him push you towards the window. With a little luck, 1st Prize will reach a speed fast enough to break the window, letting all NPCs and the player freely pass through it. You can think of it like a makeshift Portal Poster.

Arts & Crafters - This one also requires a little setup and luck. Prior to being sent to Detention, you must ensure you have all the notebooks on the floor you are currently on. You must then find Arts & Crafters and stare at him, which will cause him to get jealous and pursue you. Come into contact with him before being sent to Detention. Once his windup is complete, he will teleport you near an elevator out of Detention. Keep in mind that he also teleports Baldi to near you, meaning there is quite a bit of risk in doing this.
Closure
Are all of these methods feasible in a real game? No, of course not. I believe there is ONE documented case of Mrs. Pomp helping somebody escape detention (that I know of), and a few of the characters require both luck and skill to coax into helping you escape detention, some items are purely circumstantial and luck-dependent, and still others essentially require some form of future sight. You can probably tell which characters/items I'm referring to if you read this guide carefully.

Speaking of which, is this a comprehensive list? No! There are so many different items that could facilitate your survival/escape that I didn't include here, mostly because they're too luck-based and/or their general usage isn't for Detention (BSODA, Swinging Door Lock, 'Nana Peel, etc.).

In the end, it's always best to simply avoid Detention altogether, unless you're cornered, to which it could potentially save your life. But if you do end up in that dreaded room, use items that almost ensure your safety over items/characters that don't. Always keep one of the above items on hand at all times, excluding the Alarm Clock and Portal Poster as those are either too risky or luck-dependent. And any required luck at all is bad, as you never want to gamble with your own life.

Well, I suppose I'll be retreating back to my secluded reality now. Hope this helped!

You can also escape with dirty chalk eraser (the same with faculty nametag). Works since V0.6

Small update: reordered the "Items" section so that the most useful items (in my opinion) are at the top.

I'm only really counting items that are consistant in how they help you escape detention. The Lock is very RNG dependant, too much for me to count it, and anyways Baldi generally finds a way around it. BSODA is inefficient, and I already mentioned how Baldi unlocks doors.

You can also lock swinging door near to detention to survive, but this is very rng based
GregTheBPlayer Sep 2, 2024 @ 2:54am
Not only, Baldi unlocks door until Principal won't locks them again. So soda on him will gives you distance to escape
WhoKnowsWhoIAm  [author] Sep 1, 2024 @ 4:33pm
GregTheBPlayer I know, although that's more of a niche use and only applies if you have either a lot of soda or almost no time left in detention, so I neglected to mention that. I could add a small blurb saying that you can use BSODAs in very specific circumstances, but they're really a terrible option.

Great guide! To survive you can also use bsoda and diet bsoda.
