belt speed

There are five different belt speeds in the game - depending on your progress and upgrade level.
For the sake of simplicity, we only talk about level 5 or full speed.

One single belt can carry 180 items per minute or 180/min.

One extractor can produce 45 shapes per minute or 45/min. If you multiply this by the four available extractors per row, you get exactly 180 shapes per minute - so the theoretical maximum in the game.

No matter what you do, a belt will never run faster. So funneling more than 4 extractors into one belt isnt a good idea, it will clog the belt. There is no downside in clogging, but you "waste" production speed.

So running 16 extractors is the possible maximum with 4 belts at 180/min or 720/min in total.

If you split one belt into two at 180/min, each belt has an equal speed of 90/min, etc. simple math.
processing tools
Each processing tool has different work speeds. So its not wise to waste a full 180/s belt into a stapler which can only handle 30/s thus slowing down your whole production. Its better to use splitted belts and loadbalancers to get the optimal belt speeds.

If you have a closer look at the UI, you will find the exact number of a tool for a full belt (180/min) on the right side. You can also simply divide the working speed from the max belt speed. I.e. 180/45 = 4 - so you would need four switchers on a full belts to not clog it. Keep that in mind and try to maintain 180/min all the time!

what are loadbalancers?

Loadbalancers help to keep the "balance" of all inputs and distribute them equaly to all available outputs. Thats the idea. More than often you have very uneven inputs due to clogging, missing materials, a late material train ... you name it.

A loadbalancer helps to share the materials equally to all available processing machines, depending on the input and output numbers.

how to they work?

A load balancer distributes incoming material traffic across multiple outputs to ensure no single belt becomes overwhelmed/clogged, improving performance, reliability, and availability. There are different types of balancers and how you can build them. If you are interested in this topic i advice you have a look at the Factorio reddit.

I have created several balancers for different purposes. First: A balancer that works only on one layer. Second, a balancer that is as accurate as possible, regardless of the input and Third: A balancer that share materials from one layer to three layers (vertically).
one layer balancers
Here are different balancers for the early game. They fit onto ONE LAYER and are perfect onto 1x1 platforms or into existing builds.

two layer balancers
This balancers are allrounders. It can go from one to four belts with ease and can even handle very uneven numbers from different belts. Its also pretty fast. The build you see here is the optimum in size and complexity. I worked on it for several hours, optimizing it. I dont think it can be build more compact. It requires at least two layers height - there is no way around this.

The output lines can be altered to distribute it i.e. to the sides of a platform.

The Code is exactly the same for all variants, so i only post it once here - its basically an X to X belt load balancer.

In this case, we have 3 inputs with different loads and one is off. The output numbers fluctuate in a range between 90-100/min, but its very stable.







X to 4 (4 belts -> 4 belts)
Important note: This balancer keeps the layers by themselves. So material from layer one stays also on layer one and material from layer two only on layer two. This is a major difference in comparison to other loadbalancers seen here!

This balancer is pretty unique and it should help you to distribute all shapes equally among all available layers. It requires level 3 research though.

It takes all the input from 4 full belts of 1 layer and puts them equally into 4 belts of 3 layers. Dont mind the spagetti belts - those are necessary - i promise!

Hmm... I am trying to get a balancer that goes from 4 belts to 3 belts. Is that something that can be done?

There are different balancers .. those under "two layer balancers" keep the output layer on the same level as the input layer. Those under "three layer balancers" switch completely on vertical level.

The intention: The two layer balancers are ment to feed into stacker machine belts (layer 1 = bottom shape, layer 2 top shape), but balance horizontally.

The three layer balancers are ment for larger machines which need constant input.

Yeah but in factorio and shapez 1, the splitter/balancer/merger is 1x2 blocks wide where if you want to create the same input/output effect in Shapez 2 you need a 3x3 contraption with conveyors across 2 layers (the ones you used a lot in these balancers in your post).

That would be nice! I dont think we need splitters because if you make a belt-cross - it already acts like a splitter.

Woah, a shapez 2 player with the brains I lack to make accurate balancers! Thanks for the effort that you put into this just for people like me to find it.

I'm curious though, do you think the base game will include actual balancer blocks at one point again, like the ones in shapez 1 that work the same as splitter in factorio?
