[Steam Deck] [Ubuntu] Running on Linux with Proton 6.3-8
By Jinx
Darkstone is one of my beloved old games that I'm *still* enjoying in 2024. (I have the original CD and the f2p version on my cell phone.)

I was having trouble getting it to launch on the Steam Deck as it would play the intro videos then hang on a black screen before the menu ever showed up. On Ubuntu installed on one of my computers, it said it was launching but nothing actually would happen. Still no dice after bunch of tinkering, until I specifically set it to Proton 6.3-8 compatibility and voila!
I've only played a little bit on the Steam Deck & Ubuntu since I got it running and it runs well on both; haven't yet tried multiplayer.
Confirmed had to do this for the current Ubuntu (24.04) as in both systems Proton Experimental did not work.

Step by step easy mode
On the Darkstone screen from the Library
Select the gear icon
From the pop-up menu select Properties...

Compatibility section
Put a check in the box for Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
From the drop-down menu now select Proton 6.3-8.

On the Steam Deck now press the B button to back out of the Properties window. Not on the Steam Deck just close the Properties window to effect the change.
Note now Steam downloads this Proton 6.3 version if you haven't used it before.
After that completes in a few seconds, launch the game!
Optional
While in the Properties window, go to the General section.
Under Launch Options add -nointro so it won't play the loud race car Microids company splash video nor the Darkstone brief logo intro with the 2 people entering a cave and Drak the big dragon roaring at you -- this makes it go right to the main menu.
