Overview
Here is a comprehensive listing of the best mods currently available for DA:O.

Even if you are not particularly interested in utilizing mods, I would highly recommend installing, at least,
  • all the essential mods (this includes ALL "Bug Fixes", the majority of the "QoL Pt.1" mods, and several of the "QoL Pt.2" mods).
  • "Missing DLC".
  • Main (Re)Textures.
  • "Dragon Age BIK Improvement Konversion (DABIK)".
Don't let the guide's size discourage you - it's much easier than it seems!

I will also offer my insights on the mods, if I find necessary.

Should you encounter any issues or have any questions throughout the process, feel free to reach out and get in touch with me!

Every mod I've installed
Given the vast size of this guide, it's understandable to feel overwhelmed. To alleviate this, I've chosen to share all the mods I've installed.
Lore-friendly: I chose the mods I've installed with the goal of preserving the game's lore as much as possible while also enhancing the gameplay, improving the graphics/making it more visually appealing, and adding variety.
Installation / Uninstallation
How to install
  • Download the mod (Nexus Mods account required).
  • Extract the RAR archive file.
  • Follow the installation instructions on the description page (some may not have them; see the instructions below).

The extracted file is a DAZIP file
Install it via DAUpdater, ModManager, or DAModder. I suggest DAModder since it is much easier to operate for the majority of users (download link in the section below).

ModManager/ DAModder Installation
  • Launch the application.
  • Select (or drag the file) and install it.

DAUpdater Installation
  • Locate the app: right-click the game on Steam, select "Properties", go to the "Installed files" tab, click "Browse," and open the DAUpdater app ("...\Dragon Age\bin_ship").
  • Select (or drag the file) and install it.

The extracted file is not a DAZIP file
  • Place the files for the mod directly into the Override folder (".../Documents/Bioware/Dragon Age/Packages/Core/Override")

Uninstallation
ModManager/ DAModder Uninstallation
  • Launch the application.
  • Select the mod and uninstall it.

DAUpdater Uninstallation (not recommended)
  • Launch the game.
  • Go to the "Downloadable Content" tab and click "Installed Content".
  • Disable the file (uncheck the box).
  • Go to "Documents\BioWare\Dragon Age\AddInns" and remove the file.
  • Go to "Documents\BioWare\Dragon Age\Settings" and remove any relevant entry from "AddIns.xml".
DAO ModManager vs DA Modder
These applications are basically an improved replacement for the DAUpdater.

DA Modder
Download here[www.nexusmods.com].
  • User-friendly.
  • Allows direct installation and uninstallation of DAZIP files.
  • Backup/ restore options.

DAO ModManager
Download here[www.nexusmods.com].
  • More challenging to operate.
  • DAZIP management (install, uninstall, activate, deactivate and show details)
  • Override packages management (creating, installing, uninstalling and show details)
  • Override compatibility testing.
  • ...

Once again, I highly recommend utilizing DAModder, as it is significantly more user-friendly for the majority of users.
Before installing
Consider creating subfolders within the Override directory, especially if you plan to install many mods. This will make searching for and uninstalling specific mods much easier.

For instance,
  • "0.Bug Fixes"
  • "1.QoL Mods"
  • "2.Main ReTextures"
  • "3.CC Mods"
  • "4.Companions & NPCs"
  • "5.Equipment"
  • "6.Content"
  • "toolsetexport"

You can adjust the loading order priority of all mods within a folder by modifying the number in the folder's name (e.g., "4.Bug Fixes").
Additionally, you can adjust the loading priority by either placing mods in the "toolsetexport" folder or by placing them directly in the Override directory and then renaming their folder.

Note: For further information on mod loading priority, see the section listed below ("After Installation (Fixing Incompatibilities)").
After Installation (Fixing Incompatibilities)
Once you have all the mods you want installed, you should:
  • Consider using the Optimizer Textures (Ordenador)" tool (see the "Main (Re)Textures" section), if you've installed other large texture mods.
  • Ensure you have used the "CharGenMorph Compiler". Many mods necessitate the installation of additional mods before they can function properly. Some of these include "chargenmorphcfg" files, which must be compiled.
  • Check and fix any mod incompatibilities*.
  • Follow the instructions provided in this guide to make DA: Origins LAA.
  • Optional: Install Reshade.
  • Enjoy the game!

*Checking/ fixing mod incompatibilities
Mod loading order / priority
  • Files located in the Override folder hold precedence over DAZIP-installed mods.
  • The mods inside the Override folder are sorted in reverse alphabetical order, with those at the bottom taking precedence.
  • "toolsetexport" folder:
    • Mods placed in this folder will be given priority over any other mods of the same type.
    • If you don't have a "toolsetexport," you can create one by creating a new folder within the Override directory and naming it "toolsetexport" (remove the "").

For example, there are 2 mods installed in the Override folder: A and B.
Mod A: It edits files 1* and 2*.
Mod B: It edits files 1* and 3*.
*These edits are implemented through different files within the mods.

Changes made to files 2 and 3 should not cause a conflict (in theory, that is). However, the changes to File 1 do.
As a result, only mod B's edit to file 1 will be implemented since it has a higher priority (files at the bottom of the Override directory load first). Mod A's changes to file 1 will be disregarded.
To prioritize the changes to file 1 introduced by Mod A (over Mod B), you can simply rename its folder, for instance, "z_modA”.

The game is supposed to load the first instance of a file name, ignoring any further files with the same name.
However, there are instances when the game may overlook multiple identically named files in Override, especially NPC morphs and GDAs, and revert back to the default settings. Therefore, if possible, it would be advisable to avoid mod conflicts instead of altering the mod loading order (follow the mod's installation instructions).

Finding duplicate files/ incompatibilities
Ensure there are no conflicts between installed mods by searching for duplicate files. You can use a Duplicate File Finder, such as the Duplicate Search Tool[www.nexusmods.com] or Anti-Twin[antitwin.org], which I personally prefer (check "compare names" instead of "check content").

Should a duplicate file (with the exact same name) be found, you can:
  • 1) Ignore any duplicate files that belong to the same mod. If you followed the mod's installation instructions, there shouldn't be any issues. Take, for example, "Dain's Fixes," which includes several duplicate files. There are indeed mods that include several optional alternative modules inside that shouldn't be installed together. Hence, (again) it's imperative to follow the instructions provided on the description page or within the file itself (some of which include "README" files).
  • 2.1) Rename the mod's folder to alter its loading order. Make sure that the mod you prioritize the most is placed at a lower level within the Override folder.
  • 2.2) OR place the mod you want to prioritize inside the "toolsetexport" folder.
  • 3) Delete the file you least desire. For most mods, this shouldn't pose an issue. However, it may be necessary to remove additional files within the mod or even the entire mod.
This process must be undertaken on a case-by-case basis.
For instance, let's say you've installed the "Unique Face Textures for Companions DAO Edition" mod, and upon inspection, you discover that one of Alistair's headmorph files shares the same name as another mod's file. You prefer the 1st mod. Simply removing the file isn't sufficient; similarly, deleting the entire folder isn't necessary either. It's essential to identify and remove all related files associated with Alistair's headmorph within that mod.

If you're unsure whether to delete a file, it's best to first apply step 2). You can launch the game and check for any issues. If there are any, you can consider resorting to step 3).
However, most of the time, deciding whether to delete a file shouldn't be too difficult.

If you encounter difficulties while playing, it's advisable to try to identify the mod responsible for the problem first. For example, if a companion is missing a portion of their head, it's highly likely that the issue is with their texture mods.
Loading Issues
If you find yourself unable to load a saved file after starting the game, a simple solution is to visit the "Options" menu, click the "Video" tab, and minimize the "Texture Detail" level. This adjustment should allow you to load your saved file without any problems.
Once your saved file is successfully loaded, feel free to increase (/maximize) the "Texture Detail" level. While you are still playing, the game should load without any issues.

Keep in mind that you may need to perform this adjustment each time you reinitiate the game.

Should the game keep crashing in specific areas, consider lowering the "Texture Detail" level again temporarily.
Console
Certain mods may require the use of the console.

Enabling the console
  • Follow the instructions here[dragonage.fandom.com] (make sure it's the Ultimate Edtion - Steam).

How to use the console
  • Load your save file.
  • Open the console (press the key "\") and type the code.

Make CONSOLE commands visible[www.nexusmods.com]
  • Download the file.
  • Extract it, open it, and copy "Fonts.erf". Paste it into this location:
  • ".../Documents/BioWare/Dragon Age/Packages/Core/Data/"

AddItem with Console Improved - Script[www.nexusmods.com]
  • Download the file.
  • Extract it and copy that folder. Paste it here:
    ".../Documents/BioWare/Dragon Age/Packages/Core/Override/"

Optional
Add Any Item Visual Deluxe[www.nexusmods.com]
  • The installation process can be quite complicated, so I would recommend most users avoid this mod.
  • Should you decide to proceed with the installation, please follow to the instructions provided in the comments section[www.nexusmods.com].
(DA:O) Bug Fixes: Main - Essential mods
Qwinn's Ultimate DAO Fixpack[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It address ALL dialogue, quest, scripting, plot, and MOST item bugs in the base game.
  • It does not fix combat mechanics.

Dain's Fixes[www.nexusmods.com]
  • A collection of gameplay fixes, tweaks and quality of life changes.
  • This fixpack is completely modular. The CORE folder is needed for the various modules to work together (note that they don't do anything on their own until individual modules start directing events to them), but for everything else you can freely pick and choose.
  • Check the description page, before uninstalling.

Except for the items listed below, I suggest installing everything from the main file.

Recommended files to delete (/not to install) from "Tweaks"
  • "Random encounter frequency" *
  • "Random encounter frequency (Awakening)" **
* The mod "TSM Random Encounters are Less Random in DAO" has a higher chance of triggering rare events. If you believe that the odds are excessively high, refrain from deleting the "Random encounter frequency".
** The mod "Awakening Encounters Renovation" addresses this issue better.

Note: If you are playing as a Dual-Wielding Warrior/ Rogue, you may also want to remove "Attack Resolution".

Opprinnelig skrevet av PSousa:
I wrote this note to highlight that the module addresses one of the "Dual Striking" bugs.
Bug: "The off-hand weapon is not taken into account when determining attack speed, only the main-hand. For example, a dagger (main)/longsword (off) setup will attack 40% faster than longsword (main)/dagger (off)."
Fix: "Calculates attack timing with Dual Striking as the average of both weapons, rather than the main hand only."
Some players might want to "exploit" this bug, particularly those who have played the game in the past and are accustomed to this talent functioning in that manner.
You can equip any weapon in your off-hand, and as long as your main weapon is a dagger, your attack speed will always be determined by the dagger.
I hope this helps!

Recommended files to delete (/not to install) from "Quality of Life Changes"
  • "Autoloot containers"
  • "Autoloot kills" (there is an alternative right below)
  • "Hide modal AoE VFX" *
  • "Hide modal VFX" *
  • "Hide Shale crystal VFX" *
  • "Hide weapon VFX crusts" *
  • "Hide weapon VFX telekinetic" *
  • "Mute modal AoE SFX"
  • "Party skill for unlock" (Should you choose not to use the "Lock Bash" mod, which I recommend, you don't need to remove it.)
  • "Quiet Singing" **
  • "True display damage" (it will display the true average damage) ***
* If you'd like to avoid seeing specific visual effects (such as spells, talents, enchantments, etc.) while playing, especially in cutscenes or during conversations, it's best not to delete the files related to these effects (VFX).
** If you find the sound effects of the Bard talents (Song of Valour and Song of Courage) to be distracting or irritating, simply don't delete the "Quiet Singing" folder.
*** You can replace it with "Show DPS in inventory" (Extras). Select the option that best suits your needs.

Recommended files to delete (/not to install) from "Cosmetic"
  • "Warden Tower Shield description" *
* It is recommended that you remove it solely if you intend to utilize the "TSM Variable Tier Warden Tower Shield" mod.

Recommended "Extras" (from "Optional File") to install:
  • "Autoloot kills (conservative)" - alternative to "Autoloot kills" (you have to remove it)
  • "Desire Demon Nightmare"
  • "Destroyer"
  • "Dual Weapon Sweep Crits"
  • "Modcore"
  • "Ranged talent aim time"
  • "Show DPS in inventory"

- Do not install "Party members unlock" (“Lock Bash” mod is a better alternative).
- "Modcore" has a high risk of incompatibility with other mods.
- I didn't install the "Tactics slots," but it is a great option for users looking to expand the available number of tactics slot.
(DA:O) Other Fixes
  • Dialogue Tweaks[www.nexusmods.com]
    • It "changes companion dialogues for consistency, bug fixing, and adds new minor options. All dialogue is voiced by original game voice actors; these are changes to scripting, text, and dialogue conditions to make use of or correct existing dialogue".
    • If you have the "Blood Mage" specialization, Wynne will confront you. If you fail to persuade her, you will face off against both mages and Templars. As such, you will find yourself stuck later in the game, as you'll be required to recruit one of them.
    • If you're planning on using this mod, I recommend installing the manual version because you can easily remove unwanted files or those that conflict with other mods.
    • I do not consider this mod essential.
  • Shale's Talents - Fixes Only[www.nexusmods.com]
    • It is only when both this mod and "Dain's Fixes" are installed together that Shale's talents are supposed to function as intended.
  • TSM Gorim's Sword Fix[www.nexusmods.com]
  • TSM Tamlen Floaty Fix[www.nexusmods.com]
  • TSM Templar Armour Fixes[www.nexusmods.com]
  • TSM Seeker's Circle Name Fix[www.nexusmods.com]
  • TSM Werewolf Fix[www.nexusmods.com]
(Awakening) Bug Fixes - Essential mods
  • Awakening Bugfixes[www.nexusmods.com]
    • Before installing, remove "Sigrun_Bugged_Quest_Manual_Fix" and "Baroness_Magic_Bonus_Reward_Fix" since they are unnecessary and conflict with other mods ("Awakening Fixes and Tweaks" and "Awakening Law and Order Fixes").
  • Awakening Fixes and Tweaks[www.nexusmods.com]
    • Changes are modular, so install the folders you want.
    • You should delete the "Oghren's Gifts" folder since "Qwinn's Ultimate DAO Fixpack" already fixes that.
    • The DA2 import bug seems to be fixed by this mod.
  • Bombs Away Quest Fix[www.nexusmods.com]
  • Endgame Cutscene Fixes[www.nexusmods.com]
  • Joining Ritual Fix for Awakening Companions[www.nexusmods.com]
  • Law and Order Fixes[www.nexusmods.com]
  • Messenger Bugfix[www.nexusmods.com]
  • Party Banter Fix[www.nexusmods.com]
  • Runes Fixes[www.nexusmods.com]
    • It fixes this bug[dragonage.fandom.com].
    • I suggest installing "DWE HAL to armor - CIR SIL to weapon".
  • Silverite Mines Fix[www.nexusmods.com]
    • Remove the "trp200_architect_scene.dlg" file from this mod. It's already available in
      "Awakening Fixes and Tweaks".
  • Vigilance Fix and Rescaled[www.nexusmods.com]
    • You can fix the sword without rescaling it by going into the "Greatsword" and "Longsword" folders and deleting "Textures".
QoL Pt. 1 - Essential Mods
Autoloot and Faster movement speed out of combat (included in "Dain's Fixes")

Camp Merchant Chest[www.nexusmods.com]
  • A storage container will be introduced at the Party Camp.

Character Respecialization[www.nexusmods.com]
  • Enables the player to reset the attributes, specializations, spells, talents, and skill points of their character or any members of their party.
  • If the potion stops working, simply quit and restart the game.

FtG Quickbar[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It allows you to configure (and expand) your Quickbar.
  • You only need to install the main file. In order to configure the Quickbar, it's also necessary to download "FtG_Quickbar_Config" from the Optional Files section. Please note, however, that this file does not require installation. Simply extract, open, and launch "FtG_Quickbar_Config".

FtG UI Mod - More Readable Fonts and UI[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It enhances UI readability. You can configure it to your liking.
  • If you notice that the depiction of either your character or the companion's image within the inventory menu exhibits a 'pixelated' appearance, please rest assured; this is normal, as the menu has been 'upscaled'. You can easily fix this by consulting the "Resolution Upscaling section" provided below. However, if you don't have a screen with a resolution of, at least, 2K, I wouldn't bother with it.
  • A number of users have reported instances where the game occasionally crashes upon opening the inventory. As of now, I have not encountered any such issues.

Mouse Cursors for 4k DAO[www.nexusmods.com]

Madd Gift Guide[www.nexusmods.com]
  • Adds a note to gifts indicating the intended recipient of the items and whether an item is plot-related.

Gift Guide - Awakening[www.nexusmods.com]
  • Adds a note to gifts indicating the intended recipient of the items (for "The Stone Prisoner", "Return to Ostagar", and "Dragon Age: Awakening")
  • It is not an alternative to "Madd Gift Guide". It is advisable to install that mod as well.

More Detailed Tooltips[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It provides more detailed information about the various effects.

No Starting Abilities[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It allows you to choose your skills and talents/spells, rather than having some of them assigned to you when you create your character.

TSM Random Encounters are Less Random in DAO[www.nexusmods.com]
(Awakening) Awakening Encounters Renovation[www.nexusmods.com]
  • Both mods revamp the encounter system, ensuring that encounters happen more consistently.
  • The mod "Dain's Fixes" is in conflict with these two mods. As I mentioned before, the files that need to be deleted are located in the "Tweaks" folder (see "Bug Fixes" - "Dain's Fixes" for more information).
QoL Pt. 2 - Enhanced gameplay
Change your Hero's Hair and Face Anywhere in the Game[www.nexusmods.com]
  • Simply follow the instructions provided to use the application (it does not need to be installed).

DLC in Awakening and Awakening Fixes[www.nexusmods.com]
  • This mod enables the transfer of DLC items from Origins to Awakening, as well as the transfer of "Power of Blood" abilities. Newly created characters (Orlesian Warden) will also receive those items.
  • It also includes a fix for the sword Vigilance. Do not install this mod's sword fix if you have already installed "Vigilance Fix and Rescaled".
  • Some users suggest placing the files in both the "Addin" and "Override" folders during installation.

(Alternative) DLC Transfer To Awakening Patch (UPDATED)[www.nexusmods.com]
    • It serves a similar purpose to the mod listed above. However, it does not transfer "Power of Blood" abilities.
    • Some of the items carried over from the "Warden's Keep" DLC have texture issues. The description page provides a solution.

Extra Dog Slot[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It allows your pet Mabari war hound to become a permanent fifth traveling companion.
  • Employ the "Dog Whistle" (present in your inventory) to either summon or dispatch your canine friend.
  • Whenever possible, I try to avoid having it during combat situations, as it tends to reduce the level of challenge.

Lock Bash[www.nexusmods.com]
  • Bash open locked chests and doors (a feature that was removed from the final game).
  • Configurable (you can increase or decrease the chance of some items getting lost when bashing).
  • Your character will not bash doors or chests, if they are already unlocked or if you possess the key. Additionally, if a rogue in your party has the ability to open those, they will do so instead.
  • This mod is particularly useful if you're not playing as a rogue during your origin story.

No Helmet Hack[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It conceals helmets from view.
  • There are two files: one for Origins and another for Awakening. Install both.
  • To get this mod to work during the other campaigns (DLCs), please follow the instructions in the comments[www.nexusmods.com].

Redcliffe Better Siege[www.nexusmods.com]
  • This is a helpful mod for those who are struggling to complete "The Attack at Nightfall" quest.

Rename Dog - Mabari Name Change[www.nexusmods.com]
  • After renaming the dog, you can simply delete the mod.

Rune of Banter[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It introduces an item that instantly triggers party banter. It works for both on Origins and Awakening.

Summoning Portal[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It allows for the replacement of your party members from anywhere.

Chevalier and Templar Armors guaranteed[www.nexusmods.com]

TSM Happy Owen Sells Far Song[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It allows Owen to sell the Far Song.

TSM No RNG Fade Wall Plus[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It guarantees the drop of the Fade Wall and the Warden Tower Shield from Sophia Dryden and Gaxkang, respectively.
  • Both shields are made of Silverite (tier 6) and cannot be upgraded. To enable them to drop at tier 7, install the optional files.
  • If you intend to install the "TSM Variable Tier Warden Tower Shield" mod, you shouldn't install the "Dragonbone Warden Tower Shield" file.

TSM Unhand Those Gloves[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It makes the Ceremonial Armored Gloves a guaranteed drop (random encounter "Forest Stream").

TSM The Unobtainables[www.nexusmods.com]
  • This mod introduces items cut from the game to several different shops.

TSM Vignette Be Gone[www.nexusmods.com]
QoL Pt. 3 - Enhanced gameplay (mechanics change)
Advanced Tactics[www.nexusmods.com]
  • In the comments (page 2), there is an explanation (and solution) for your companions changing targets during combat: select "Target" instead of "Enemy" in the tactics window.

Even More Advanced Tactics[www.nexusmods.com]
  • An enhanced, albeit more intricate, alternative to the mod "Advanced Tactics". Please refrain from installing both!

Combat Tweaks for Awakening and Origins [www.nexusmods.com]
  • It isn't compatible with certain changes from "Dain's Fixes". You will need to remove some of the mod's modules (just follow the instructions on the description page).

Awakening Abilities for Origins[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It isn't compatible with the mod mentioned above.
  • It isn't compatible with certain changes from "Dain's Fixes". You will need to remove some of the mod's modules (just follow the instructions on the description page).

Dexterity Light Armor[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It replaces strength with dexterity for light armor requirements.
  • "No Helmet Hack" (mod) includes a compatibility patch for this mod.

Dragon Disciple Powers[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It introduces new dragon-specific talents.

Extended Dog Talents[www.nexusmods.com]

Origins Faster Combat[www.nexusmods.com]
  • Due to balance issues, I prefer to avoid installing this mod. Although it increases the attack speed of normal attacks, it has no effect on the animation speed of talents and spells. Therefore, they will appear relatively weaker.

The Magic Box[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It introduces a chest that dynamically adjusts the level of your weapons and armor in accordance with your character's level.
  • This mod will only work in the main campaign (Origins).
  • I have chosen not to install this mod myself, opting instead to upgrade my equipment with Mikhael Dryden[dragonage.fandom.com], at Soldier's Peak.

Scale Inventory Script[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It has the same function as the mod mentioned above, but it utilizes the console instead of a chest. Moreover, it is compatible with any campaign.

Spellcasting Weapons Drawn[www.nexusmods.com]
  • This mod permits the casting of all spells while weapons are drawn, with the exception of Power of Blood spells.
  • I appreciate that the game imposes certain restrictions on spellcasting when a mage opts to use a weapon other than a staff. Therefore, I prefer to avoid installing this mod.
If you have an Arcane Warrior in your party, you will need to be creative in order to overcome this limitation. The best way to accomplish this is by selecting the right spells and gear. One may opt for a staff, a sword and shield, or solely a shield.
  • It is compatible with "Dain's fixes". However, it requires that you overwrite some of its files during the installation process.

ZevranASAP[www.nexusmods.com]
  • You can now recruit one of the companions, Zevran, considerably earlier.
  • It's only partially compatible to "Qwinn's Ultimate DAO Fixpack": "Use the loose files script-only version in your override directory. You will lose out on restoration ZE3003, but if you care enough about Zevran to use ZevranASAP, it seems unlikely you'd want to kill him or drive him out of the party."
  • I would not recommend this mod to first-time players!
QoL Pt. 4 - Enhanced gameplay/ cheats
The Winter Forge[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It enables you to create and customize your own equipment.
  • This mod may have an impact on the game's balance, so I suggest using it with caution.
  • I believe this modification is perfect for players who appreciate an item's visual appeal but have concerns regarding its stat bonuses, either due to their weak strength or overwhelming power.
If keeping the game balanced is important to you, think about swapping out those bonuses for ones from a similar item you currently possess.
As you progress through the game, you'll come across better items. Consequently, you can keep swapping out the stats of the initial item to prevent it from becoming outdated (replace the stats; do not add them!). Essentially, it will be the same as having the superior item equipped, but with a different appearance.
  • I'm not sure if it's possible to replace an armor's intrinsic base (armor) values, but you can upgrade its tier using this mod or the in-game mechanic (for instance, with Mikhael Dryden). It's also possible to apply a "+X armor" or "-X armor" stat bonus to the armor.
  • The "Forgesmith's tool" can be used for anything this mod is capable of. The item becomes available in your inventory after installation. You don't need to use the forge or autel, nor gather any materials.
  • (Recommended) Remove the NPC and all unnecessary items: click on the barrel (at the camp) --> Configuration options --> Addon main configurations --> Disable enchantment routines.
  • How to prevent the loss of the original item while transferring stat bonuses: barrel (camp) --> Configuration options --> Forge options --> actually dupe items...

Bodahn Tweaks V3[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It allows you to customize Bodahn's stock prices according to your preferences.
  • He now sells other crafting supplies as well.

TSM Mighty Dawg[www.nexusmods.com]
  • Basically, it's a cheat.

Dragon Age Mutator 014[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It boasts several features, some of which are already present in other mods, such as the ability to remove visual effects from weapons or sustained talents (which are included in "Dain's fixes").
Additionally, its simplicity of use is a significant advantage; all you need to do is check the box and install.
  • The other mods are still preferable, though.

MetaGame Items[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It has several features, including the ability to respec, change class, origin, or gender, and swap party members at any given moment. Additionally, this mod will allow you to return to Lothering in order to recruit a missing companion.
  • As mentioned above, there are other mods that offer similar features, including the ability to respec/ replace companions anywhere. Therefore, I would not recommend installing it unless it is absolutely necessary, for example, for the purpose of returning to Lothering and recruiting a missing companion.
  • I am uncertain about the impact of changing classes on previously earned bonus points from the Fade and Tomes.

If you want to change your class, you can simply use to the console:
  • runscript wizard XX - Changes the main character into a level XX wizard.
  • runscript rogue XX - Changes the main character into a level XX rogue.
  • runscript warrior XX - Changes the main character into a level XX warrior.
You'll lose all your items, including those stored in the inventory, so make sure to deposit them before proceeding. Additionally, any bonus points you've earned from the Fade and Tomes will be forfeited. However, this mod[www.nexusmods.com] allows you to recover those points.

Tome of Death[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It adds a tome that allows the player to instantly kill all enemies.
  • This mod may be useful for those who find themselves stuck in a certain area because of an enemy. Before installing it, I recommend either reloading an older save or simply attempting to understand the reasons behind your struggles to overcome them, be it equipment, tactics, your party, build, etc.

TSM Potion Cooldown Tweaks for DAO and DAA[www.nexusmods.com]
QoL: Skipping content
Skip Intro Movies (not a Mod)
  • Launch "DAOriginsConfig" ("...\Dragon Age\bin_ship"), select "Video", and uncheck the option "Disable Intro Movies".
"DAOriginsConfig" location: right-click the game on Steam, select "Properties", then the "Installed files" tab, and finally "Browse" and open the bin_ship folder. ("...\Dragon Age\bin_ship").

Skip the Prelude[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It bypasses Ostagar without missing out on any any quests, codex, items, or experience points.
  • Skipping Ostagar is not recommended to first-time players!

Shortcut through the Deep Roads[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It skips a section of the Deep Roads but retains all quests, codex, items, and experience that you would otherwise gain.
  • Skipping the Deep Roads is not recommended to first-time players!

Skip the Fade[www.nexusmods.com]
  • Upon completing the Fade, you receive all the attribute points, codex entries, and experience that you would normally receive.
  • Skipping the Fade is not recommended to first-time players!
Resolution Upscaling
Nathanael's 4K Resolution Mod[www.nexusmods.com]

Alternatively, there's this guide:
Tempoz's Guide to 4K DAO[www.nexusmods.com]
  • A guide on how to improve the readability of the user interface at higher resolutions.
  • I wouldn't bother with it, unless you have a screen with a resolution of, at least, 2K.
Main (Re)Textures (HD)
Below, I have provided an alternative option that has a lower impact on performance. I won't mention any other options, such as "Dragon Age Origins Unofficial Remaster[www.nexusmods.com]", because I'm confident that this particular combination of mods delivers the best possible results.

Please follow the instructions provided below to install the textures. It is possible that this may have an impact on performance.
Despite possessing an outdated laptop, I continue to use them, and the difference (performance-wise) is barely noticeable.
Step 6) improves performance significantly.

1) Download AP Neural Enhanced Textures v4[www.nexusmods.com].
  • Extract the file and rename the folder by prefixing it with a 'z_'. For instance, change the name to 'z_Diffusion Textures'. Going forward, I'll refer to it simply as Folder (A).

2) Download Old Gods[www.nexusmods.com].
  • Extract the files and copy them into directory (A), replacing the duplicates.

3) Download "YAHD - AIO (Origins)", "YAHD - AIO (Awakening)", and "Old Gods Female Underwear Fix" from YAHD - Yet Another HD Mod (and Fixes)[www.nexusmods.com]
* Optional: "YAHD - CATACHR1SM Retextures HD 2.0" - It includes alternative retextures for the Ogre, the Desire Demon, and the Lady of the Forest.
  • Extract the contents of "Old Gods Female Underwear Fix". Copy the file's contents and paste them into folder (A). Replace the duplicate file when prompted.
  • Extract "YAHD - AIO (Origins)". As it contains subfolders, it is necessary to first open them, copy their contents (you don't need to access the "LOD" folders; simply copy them), and then paste them into folder (A). Replace the duplicates when asked. Repeat this process for all subfolders.
  • Extract "YAHD - AIO (Awakening)". This mod can be installed directly, so there's no need to copy the contents of this file to (A). However, please refrain from doing so for the time being.

4) Download all 4 files from Manually Optimized Textures (AP Neural Enhanced Textures)[www.nexusmods.com]
  • Extract "Manually Optimized Textures" and "Mip Fixes". Copy and paste the files located within "Mip Fixes" into the "Manually Optimized Textures" folder. When prompted, replace any duplicate files.
  • Open the "Manually Optimized Textures" folder, select a subfolder, and then copy all its contents into folder (A). When prompted, replace any duplicate files. Repeat this process for each subfolder within the "Manually Optimized Textures" folder.

5) Extract the "Lyrium Addled" and "Ostagar Ashes Fix" files, then install them by copying them to the Override folder.
".../Documents/Bioware/Dragon Age/Packages/Core/Override"

6) Given their size, these textures could impact your game's performance, even after replacing some of them with textures from "Manually Optimized (...)". Therefore, before installing the folders (A) and "YAHD - AIO (Origins)", there is an additional optional step.
Download Optimizer Textures (Ordenador)[www.nexusmods.com].
  • Extract the file, and then launch the application. Check option "Resize down (reduces texture dividing by 2 width and height) - If > 2048" and leave the rest unchanged. Begin the process. This may take some time. Once completed, close the application.
You might consider repeating the process with a target above 1024 (If > 1024), but in my opinion, it would be unnecessary to do so.

7) Finally, you can install folders (A) and "YAHD - AIO (Awakening)" by moving them to the Override folder (".../Documents/Bioware/Dragon Age/Packages/Core/Override"). You can also delay installing "YAHD - AIO (Awakening)" until just before you start playing Awakening.

Low-impact alternatives
If you plan to use the textures listed above, please refrain from installing these.

Theta HD[www.nexusmods.com]
Theta HD (Fix)[www.nexusmods.com]
  • This mod fixes certain textures from the mod directly above.
Character Creation (CC)
Even if you're not particularly interested in CC modding, I still recommend installing "CharGenMorph Compile", "Natural Lighting for the Character Creator", and "Universal Voices".

CC Tip: How to avoid the "sunken cheeks" effect when creating a bearded character.
  • 1) Select the beard you want. Memorize its position on the slider, then set it to "no beard".
  • 2) Adjust the "mouth" and "jaw/cheeks" as you prefer.
  • 3) On the "Beard" slider, recall your previously chosen setting and click directly on it. Avoid dragging!
  • 4) You are all set!
Note: Any modifications made to your character after this point will immediately reset the cheeks. Therefore, it is crucial that you set the beard as your final action.

CharGenMorph Compiler[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It automates the process of merging "chargenmorphcfg.xml" files: it compiles all the chargenmorphcfg files you have scattered throughout your override directory into one single master file.
  • Certain mods may still require manual editing of the "chargenmorphcfg.xml" file. Just follow the instructions provided.
  • Once all the CC mods have been installed, it is imperative that you use this tool. Otherwise, they won't function properly.

CC Mods

More options
For those interested, here are additional options available: choose and install the ones that appeal to you.
Companions & NPCs (morphs/textures)
Some of these mods require additional files in order to work properly. If this is the case, a warning will appear prior to the download. To successfully install, it is imperative to follow the instructions provided on the description page or within the file itself (some of which include "README" files).

Companions Mods suggestions
  • (DA:O and Awakening) Alistair, Anders, Loghain, Oghren, Sigrun, Velanna, and Zevran: "Unique Face Textures for Companions"
  • Dog: "Puppy Eyes".
  • Leliana: I suggest using the default version of one of the following mods: "Unique Face Textures", "Companions Replacer", and "Thedas Redone - Companions" (with freckles), or the "ILS Headmorphs" mod (KH eye texture version). These mods also provide additional choices.
  • Morrigan: "Unique Face Textures". The "DAO Companion Morphs" mod is also an excellent alternative, as it gives her the DA:I appearance.
  • Shale: "Shale Retextured HD".
  • Sten: "Sten of the Beresaad". Alternatively, if you prefer Sten's appearance to more closely resemble the original, you can choose the "Unique Face Textures" mod (with "Sten - No Brows" installed).
  • Wynne: "Unique Face Textures", "DAO Companion Morphs" or "Thedas Redone - Companions" (alternative hair). If you want a look closer to the original, select the 1st mod. Otherwise, I suggest choosing one of the others.
  • (Awakening) Nathaniel: Since I haven't yet played Awakening with these mods, I've been unable to compare "Unique Face Textures" with "The Howes of Amaranthine". In the meantime, I have decided to install the second mod's textures (Nathaniel Howe's "updated" version). You are welcome to choose the one that best suits your preferences.
  • (Awakening) Justice: Based on the screenshots from the "Unique Face Textures" mod, I'm not particularly fond of the changes made to his original appearance. I would suggest using the "SJC's Vanilla Face Textures Replacements" mod.

Unique Face Textures for Companions DAO Edition[www.nexusmods.com]
Download both "el_companiontexturesDAAwakening" and "el_companiontexturesDAO".
  • No Sten: Before installing "Sten of the Beresaad", make sure that all files related to Sten are deleted from the "el_companiontexturesDAO" folder. This process requires removing the "Sten" folder from the "Companions Morphs" directory, as well as the 5 Sten-related files from the "el_textures" subfolder. They all contain 'sten' somewhere in the name (e.g. "pn_eye_elSten_0d").
  • No Leliana: If you're planning to install the textures from "Companions Replacer" mod for Leliana, follow the same steps you did for Sten above. This entails removing all Leliana-related files from the "el_textures" subdirectory. This folder contains only four such files. In addition, you should remove the "Leliana" folder from within the "Companions Morphs" directory.
  • No Nathaniel: If you want to use the textures from the "The Howes of Amaranthine" mod, follow the same instructions as outlined above. This time, the files are stored in the directory folder "el_companiontexturesDAAwakening" rather than "el_companiontexturesDAO".
  • No Justice: If you do not want to install Justice's texture mod, repeat the process mentioned above. The files are found under "el_companiontexturesDAAwakening".
  • Morrigan: I'd also recommend adding "Chasind Eyepaint for Morrigan" to her texture mods.
Begin by downloading the "Requested Tweaks" file, accessible under the "Miscellaneous Files" section of the Nexus download page. Extract and open it. Then, select the "Morrigan - Chasind Eyepaint" subfolder, copy its contents, and paste them into the appropriate folder. When prompted to do so, replace the existing files.
  • Sten: Should you opt to utilize this mod's textures for Sten, which are quite in line with his vanilla aesthetic, I suggest also installing "Sten - No Brows". Similarly, it can be installed in the same way as the previously described "Morrigan - Chasind Eyepaint" (both are in the "Requested Tweaks" directory).

Companions Replacer[www.nexusmods.com]
  • This mod requires one or more additional files in order to work properly.
  • Should you choose to use this mod's textures for Leliana, download "DAO_Leliana" and "DAO_Leliana_fixed_scalp_color_morphs".
  • Please follow the instructions provided in the "README" text file located inside the "DAO_Leliana" folder.
  • To proceed, copy and paste the contents of the "DAO_Leliana_fixed_scalp_color_morphs" file into the "DAO_Leliana" directory. Once prompted, proceed with overwriting the files.
  • Choose your preferred Leliana texture. I recommend Leliana's default option ("00 khs Leliana replacer"). Should you opt for a different hairstyle, you must first copy the contents of the folder containing that hairstyle into the "00 khs Leliana replacer" directory.

Sten of the Beresaad[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It gives Sten an appearance that is closer to what the Qunari will look like in the sequels.
  • It will not function properly without the Kossith race mod. Please use the link provided in my guide instead of the one on Nexus (it's updated). This mod gives the Qunari their DA2 appearance, with the exception of Sten.
  • (Optional) Download YAHD - Sten of the Beresaad HD 1.2[www.nexusmods.com] (from "Miscellaneous files"). Overwrite the original mod textures with the ones present there.

(Optional) Sten - No Clothes[www.nexusmods.com]
  • When Sten is initially encountered, it appears that he is attired in commoner clothing, which is rather strange. This mod, however, changes that.
  • I suggest using this mod in conjunction with "Sten of the Beresaad".

DAO Companion Morphs (With Anora)[www.nexusmods.com]
  • Alternative head morphs/ textures for various companions, including Morrigan, Leliana, and Wynne, as well as Anora.
  • This mod requires several additional files in order to work properly.
  • If you're only installing this mod for Anora, be sure to remove all files related to the other companions.

The Howes of Amaranthine[www.nexusmods.com]
  • If you favor Nathaniel's aesthetic from the "Unique Face Textures" mod, ensure that all associated files pertaining to him are removed from this mod.
  • An updated version is available in a separate file for Nathaniel Howe. If you have chosen to use this version, download the file, extract it, and copy its contents. Paste them into the "The Howes of Amaranthine" folder, replacing duplicates when asked.
  • Should you feel that Delilah Howe's appearance significantly deviates from the original, you may also consider deleting all of her files.
Companions & NPCs (cont.)
Justice

Puppy Eyes[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It can be used in combination with any of the dog mods listed below.

Armored Mabari[www.nexusmods.com]
  • This mod is only compatible with the "Puppy Eyes" mod.

(Optional/ Alternative) Mabari Recolours - Origins[www.nexusmods.com]
  • This mod is not compatible with the "Armored Mabari",  "Mabari Update",  or "Dalls_Mabari" mods. I'm not sure if deleting the duplicate files could make this mod work in conjunction with another of these mods.
  • Even though this mod and "Improved Mabari" do not share duplicate files, I'm not sure if the two mods will work together.

(Alternative) Mabari Update
  • This mod brings the Hound's appearance closer to its DA:2 counterpart.
  • This mod is only compatible with the "Puppy Eyes" mod.

(Alternative) Improved Mabari for DAO[www.nexusmods.com]
(Alternative) Dalls_Mabari[www.nexusmods.com]
  • Despite the fact that this mod and "Improved Mabari" do not share duplicate files, I am not sure if they are able to work together.

Shale Retextured HD[www.nexusmods.com]

(Witch Hunt DLC) TSM's DA2-Style Ariane[www.nexusmods.com]

Morrigan and Leliana Sacred Ashes Face Mod[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It gives them an appearance similar to the one seen in the Sacred Ashes cinematic trailer.

Morrigan Concept Art Edition Redux[www.nexusmods.com]
  • Here are more head morphs/ textures for Morrigan.

Morrigan of the Wilds[www.nexusmods.com]

Inquisition inspired morphs[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It gives certain companions and NPCs (Alistair, Morrigan, Leliana, Cullen, and Isabela) their DA:I appearance.

ILS Headmorphs[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It includes morphs for a number of NPCs and companions, including Leliana, Wynne, Isabela, Bella, Berwick, Jarvia, Lanaya, Marjolaine (for both DA:O and Leliana's Song), Rica, Taliesen, and Tamlen.
  • Some morphs require the mod listed below to work properly. If you are asked for files from "Kani Himes Blog Stuff" or "KH", you will need to install both "KH_CHARACTER CREATOR" and "KH_TOOLSET FILES".
  • Isabela: There are two versions to choose from, but it appears that the hair texture file "hf_har_NewSeaSpotlight_0" is no longer available. As a result, you'll have to select the DA2 version.

KH_Creations[www.nexusmods.com]
  • "KH_COMPANIONS REDESIGNED" file: It includes morphs for temporary and permanent companions (Origins, Leliana's Song, Awakening, and Witch Hunt).
  • Following the installation of the "KH_CHARACTER CREATOR FILES", it is expected that you may experience a series of errors while utilizing the "CharGenMorph Compiler".
    • To address this issue, it is necessary to edit the "chargenmorphcfg" file, which can be done using Notepad.
      <resource name="hf_har_PLeli_0" cut="1 />
      <resource name="hf_har_kh01" cut="1 />
      <resource name="ef_har_summer_0" cut="1 />
      <resource name="ef_har_summer_0" cut="1 />
Use the "Find" function within Notepad and substitute the after the 1 with ".
The wrong quotation mark is slanted in comparison to the other ones.

Even more options to choose from:
NPCs (cont.)
Despite the often lower (sometimes significantly lower) resolution of most clothing replacement mods compared to the "Main (Re)Textures," it may still be worth installing them: for certain NPCs and factions, they increase the sense of coherence and, more importantly, the mods add to the overall diversity of the game.

Some of the mods that replace clothing may clash with the "Main (Re)Textures". Make sure they have a higher loading priority (you can place them in the "toolsetexport" directory).

Non-specific NPC mods
Unique Characters Overhaul[www.nexusmods.com]
  • This mod conflicts with several other outfit mods. However, because everything is so neatly organized, it is simple to locate and remove specific files.
  • You can also complement this mod with additional "outfit mods" (NPCs). For instance, if the appearance of certain mages doesn't meet your expectations, you can remove the corresponding files, such as "Broken Circle" ("Main Quests") and "Mage" ("Origins"). Following this, you can continue to install new mods from the "NPCs: Mages" category.
  • Some of the mods needed for this to work properly can be downloaded here[www.dropbox.com] (they were removed from Nexus).
  • This mod will only work if installed before traveling to a new area. For example, if you install the mod after arriving in the market district of Denerim, none of the NPCs there will be affected. However, the NPCs in the "Gnawed Noble Tavern" will be affected, as long as you have not yet entered that area previously. If you reload to a save file in which you haven't previously visited the market district, the mod will actually work on all NPCs there.

Thedas Redone[www.nexusmods.com]
  • Huge NPCs' face overhaul.
  • This mod is incompatible with other mods that modify NPC headmorphs. However, because everything is so neatly organized, it is simple to locate and remove specific NPC mod files.

Named NPC Overhaul[www.nexusmods.com]
  • Lore friendly headmorphs for several NPCs.
  • If you have installed Anora's headmorph from "DAO Companion Morphs (With Anora)", just remove "hf_den510_anora.mor" from this mod.
  • This mod isn't compatible with other NPCs headmorphs. However, because everything is so neatly organized, it is simple to locate and remove specific .mor files.

Improved Atmosphere[www.nexusmods.com]
  • The mod offers a range of features, such as additional NPCs, modifications to their gear and outfits, changes to dialogue, and bug fixes, among others.
  • It is truly impressive. However, the mod's installation process is quite cumbersome due to the numerous conflicts it has with other mods, some of which offer better alternatives, such as bug fixes. Therefore, I've chosen not to bother with it.

Faces of Thedas[www.nexusmods.com]

Texture Replacements from KH_Creations[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It contain textures that replace the game's vanilla textures.
  • It may be incompatible with some mods.

SJC's Vanilla Face Textures Replacements[www.nexusmods.com]
  • If you've installed the "Realistic Teeth" mod, you'll need to download the "SJC's Vanilla Face Texture Replacement REALISTIC TEETH COMPATIBLE" (Optional Files section) instead.

Realistic Teeth[www.nexusmods.com]

NPCs: Elves
TSM Elfy Ghost Boy[www.nexusmods.com]

Elves of Ferelden (beta)[www.nexusmods.com]
  • This clothing mod does not alter facial appearances. You can still choose to install "Ferelden Elves" or "DA2 Elves for DAO – Retain Variety" if you wish.
Elves of Ferelden HD[www.dropbox.com]
  • It improves the models and textures of Elves of Ferelden, as well as fixing the LODs.
  • For comparison, here are some images[samsdaomods.tumblr.com].

(Optional) An Update to Elves of Ferelden[www.nexusmods.com]

Ferelden Elves - DA2 Style[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It will not function properly without the Elf update mod.
  • Although I like most of the changes made to the elves, I prefer how their ears originally looked, so I decided not to use this mod.
  • To install this mod, you'll need to delete Zevran and Velanna's texture files from either Unique Face Textures or this mod. Choose your favorite (character-specific) design from either of these mods, and then remove all corresponding texture files from the other mod.

(Optional) tmp7704 unique dalish armour model tweak[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It is intended to be utilized in conjunction with the "Ferelden Elves" mod.
  • It is highly likely that this mod can also serve as a replacement for the "Unique Light Armor" mod when installing "Dalish Armor Replacement". However, I would not risk doing so.
I would also not install the HD Elven Light Armor mod, in this particular scenario.

(Alternative) DA2 Elves for DAO - Retain Variety[www.nexusmods.com]

Senior Enchanter Robes[www.nexusmods.com]
  • This mod conflicts with the "Main (Re)Textures".
If you're interested in using this mod, you have 3 options:
    • You can either modify the mod's loading priority by changing its name (for example, by adding "zz_" to its name, "zz_Senior...") or by placing it inside the "toolsetexport" folder.
    • Or you could search for any duplicate files between these two mods, cut them from your "Main (Re)Textures" folder, and paste them somewhere other than the inside of the Override directory*. Personally, I prefer the first option.
      Duplicate files: "pf_rob_appb_0d.dds", "pf_rob_appb_0s.dds", "pm_rob_appb_0d.dds", and "pm_rob_appb_0s.dds".
      * If you decide to uninstall the mod, you can simply return those files to the folder.

Apprentice Robes Retexture (from "The Deck of Many Mods")[www.nexusmods.com]
  • This mod conflicts with the "Main (Re)Textures".
If you're interested in using this mod, you have 3 options:
    • You can either modify the mod's loading priority by changing its name (for example, by adding "zz_" to its name, "zz_Apprentice...") or by placing it inside the "toolsetexport" folder.
    • Or you could search for any duplicate files between these two mods, cut them from your "Main (Re)Textures" folder, and paste them somewhere other than the inside of the Override directory*. Personally, I prefer the first option.

Covered Enchanter Robes[www.nexusmods.com]

Grey Wardens of Ferelden[www.nexusmods.com]
  • This mod offers DA2-style armor and weapons for the Grey Warden, as well as ensuring that all Grey Warden NPCs wear their uniform.
  • I prefer Duncan to wear the armor featured in "Duncan's armor Legacy inspired Retexture" or "Duncan Outfit" (Heavy Armor), as they do not significantly alter Duncan's original appearance (especially the first mod).
Therefore, if all you're after the armors and have no intention of replacing Alistair and Duncan's original armor, you can simply install the core file ("Core Mod GWoF - REQUIRED"). Afterward, proceed to spawn the items using the console.
If you decide to proceed, I suggest spawning the items at a later stage in the game or postpone their usage until you have finished one or two main missions, provided you haven't already installed either the first or the fourth optional mod. Otherwise, feel free to spawn them whenever you want.
  • It's incompatible with the "tmp7704's Qunari Update" mod. You can download the fix here[www.nexusmods.com] ("GWoF-Qunari Update fix Version 1").
  • Install the Grey Wardens of Ferelden (Joining Fix)[www.nexusmods.com] mod.

  • At the moment, I am using the 1st mod.

(Optional) Grey Wardens of Ferelden Update[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It allows the previously described mod to function in DA: Awakening as well.
  • Before you install the main file ("GWoF Expanded Integration 1.1), follow the instructions in the README file that it contains.
  • I also suggest installing "Warden's Oath".
  • If you installed Dain's Fixes' cosmetic changes for Bergen's Honor, you should delete the file 'prm000im_bergens_honor.uti'.

(Optional) Origin Unique Grey Warden armour[www.nexusmods.com]

TSM Blighted Warden Commander console script for GWoF[www.nexusmods.com]

Thedosian Grey Wardens[www.nexusmods.com]
  • If you missed your opportunity to acquire the armors in Ostagar, you can download and install "Add items via console command" (see Optional Files section). Once that's done, you can then spawn the armor from the console.
  • These armors excessively OP.
  • If you're fond of the item's aesthetics but concerned about maintaining the game's balance, don't worry. The "Winter Forge" mod offers a solution. You can either replace their stat bonuses for ones more evenly distributed (from different items), or simply remove the stats from the item altogether.

Duncan's armor Legacy inspired Retexture[www.nexusmods.com]
  • Duncan's alternative Grey Warden armor (closer to his original appearance).
  • Based on the "Grey Wardens of Ferelden" mod.
  • This mod conflicts with the "Main (Re)Textures".
If you're interested in using this mod, you have 3 options:
    • You can either modify the mod's loading priority by changing its name (for example, by adding "zz_" to its name, "zz_Duncan...") or by placing it inside the "toolsetexport" folder.

Duncan Outfit[www.nexusmods.com]
  • Alternative Grey Warden for Duncan.
  • Based on the "Grey Wardens of Ferelden" mod.

The Witcher 2 DAO[www.nexusmods.com]
  • The armor and robes look really nice, albeit overpowered. You can replace their stat bonuses with the "The Winter Forge" mod.
  • Certain items are designed for specific genders or races (human/ elf), and when worn by the incorrect gender or race, they fail to work as intended. Instead, they turn invisible.
  • In addition to the armor and weapons from "The Witcher 2", it also includes an optional file that enables the user to carry the swords on their hips ("Sheath Swords on Hips" + "sword sheaths cutscene glitches fixed").
Equipment Pt. 2

Upgradeable equipment (Higher-tier materials)
  • Improved Ancient Elven Armor[www.nexusmods.com]
    • It enhances the Ancient Elven armor set. It also improves the Spellweaver's stats (Optional Files).
    • It is not compatible with the mod I mentioned above, which is my preferred option. Although it is still possible to use the Spellweaver mod, I find it to be OP.
  • Upgradeable Elven Armor[www.nexusmods.com]
    • It makes the Ancient Elven armor set upgradeable (up to Tier 7).
  • TSM Better RTO Items[www.nexusmods.com]
    • (Awakening) It allows the Cailan’s Armor set, Duncan’s weapons, and Maric’s Blade to upgrade up to Tier 9 .
  • TSM Improved Ceremonial Armor[www.nexusmods.com]
  • TSM Variable Tier Warden Tower Shield[www.nexusmods.com]
    • If you intend to install "Dragonbone Warden Tower Shield" (an optional file from "TSM No RNG Fade Wall Plus"), it is not necessary to install this mod.
Companion-specific equipment
Alistair
TSM A Ring from Alistair[www.nexusmods.com]

TSM Alistair's Rose[www.nexusmods.com]

TSM Arms of the Bastard Prince[www.nexusmods.com]
  • This armor is acquired in Redcliff following the revelation of Alistair's father.
  • It also swaps his armor during the epilogue ("A Bastard to the Bitter End" - "Optional Files" section).

Dog
TSM The Mystery of the Missing Kaddis[www.nexusmods.com]
Leliana
Lelianas True Sacred Ashes Armor[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It adds Leliana's armor from the Sacred Ashes cinematic trailer. It's available for purchase via Bodahn Feddic.
  • Install both the "Normal Map Override" and the "Update v1 1" files (from "Update Files").

Leliana Item Pack[www.nexusmods.com]
  • These armors are excessively strong.
  • If you're fond of the item's aesthetics but concerned about maintaining the game's balance, don't worry. The "Winter Forge" mod offers a solution. You can either replace their stat bonuses for ones more evenly distributed (from different items), or simply remove the stats from the item altogether.

Loghain
TSM River Dane for All[www.nexusmods.com]

Morrigan
Morrigan Ashes Inspired Robe[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It replaces Morrigan's attire with a robe reminiscent of the one seen in the Sacred Ashes cinematic trailer.
  • It comes in three different versions. Before installing, select one and delete the others.
  • This mod conflicts with the "Main (Re)Textures." You only need to adjust the mod's loading priority by changing its name (for instance, by appending "zz_" to it: "zz_Sacred Ashes").

(Alternative/ Optional) Morrigan with a hood[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It combines Concept Morrigan's hood into Morrigan's default robe.
  • There is a compatibility patch for the mod listed right above, which makes the hood purple.

(Alternative) TSM Sacred Ashes Robes of Possession[www.nexusmods.com]

(Alternative) Raven Skull Robe - outfit for Morrigan[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It introduces a new replacement outfit for Morrigan.
  • It's not compatible with any mod that changes her initial robe.

(Alternative) Morrigan's Robes Collection[www.nexusmods.com]

Sten
Shokra-taar for Sten[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It adds the Arishok outfit (DA:2) for Sten. Additionally, it introduces new versions of the armor featured in the Kossith Add-On[www.nexusmods.com] mod.
  • It will not function properly without the Kossith race mod.
  • You will find the 4K textures in the Optional Files section. Copy the contents of this folder to "...\Arishok Sten Armour\Textures" and replace the files when prompted.
You may want to consider using the "Optimizer Textures (Ordenador)" tool before installing them (see the "Main (Re)Textures").
  • None of the pieces of the "Arishok outfit" come with any stat bonuses. However, should you have a preference for the armor's design, yet find it lacking in stats compared to later items in the game, you can utilize the "The Winter Forge" mod. It allows you to merge stats from another piece of armor into the outfit.
  • The "Kossith Add On Heavy Armour" is well balanced.

Kossith Add-On[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It will not function properly without the Kossith race mod.
  • These items have low-resolution and are excessively powerful. If you appreciate the armor's visual appeal, simply use the "Kossith Add On Heavy Armour", which is part of the mod mentioned earlier. It is considerably more balanced.

TSM Cord of the Beresaad[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It isn't compatible with tmp7704's Qunari Update.

Zevran
TSM Black Fox Zevran[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It replaces his initial armor during the first meeting.

TSM Scoia'tael Zevran[www.nexusmods.com]
  • It replaces his initial armor during the first meeting, the quest for the Urn of Sacred Ashes, and the epilogue (different files for each).

Others (DLCs)
TSM Iconic Anders[www.nexusmods.com]

TSM Dalish Weapons for Ariane[www.nexusmods.com]
Extra Items Packs
These packages include multiple item portings (from DA:2 and DA:I).
Sometimes, these mods may be necessary before installing others. If that's the case, you can simply install them and forget about them. Just make sure there are no compatibility issues (there are more incompatible mods than those listed here).
  • Back to Ferelden[www.nexusmods.com]
  • Ferelden pack[www.nexusmods.com]
    • Incompatible with "Grey Wardens of Ferelden": delete these 2 "Grey Wardens" folders
      "...\Ferelden pack\NPC replacement\Grey Wardens" and "...\Ferelden pack\Grey Wardens".
  • Loincloth Fashion[www.nexusmods.com]
  • Kirkwall Exports[www.nexusmods.com]
  • Sapphim's Origin Mini Mods[www.nexusmods.com]
    • Additionally, it includes a mod that removes the glowing effects from the ghosts during the Gauntlet.
  • Viva la Orlais[www.nexusmods.com]
    • Incompatible with "Unique Light Armors": delete "boots_light_variation_da2" from this mod.
    • Incompatible with “Realistic Teeth” and "SJC's Vanilla Face Textures Replacements” (including Justice Skin): delete the “Teeth replacer” folder ("…\Viva la Orlais\Nude replacer\Teeth replacer").
    • Incompatible with "Main (Re)Textures": you can use a duplicate file finder to identify the exact files (there are 6). Remove them from this mod.
Origin exclusive additional content
I've never bothered to install any of these mods. Be aware of incompatibilities!
(I've copied this mod list from Reddit.)

Dalish Elf

Human Noble

Magi
Cutscenes
Dragon Age BIK Improvement Konversion (DABIK)[www.nexusmods.com]
  • This mod enhances all prerendered cutscenes.
  • I recommend installing it.

DoF Off - remove depth of field[www.nexusmods.com]

Ostagar
  • Tinimaus and SarahCousland's - the Rescue at Ishal[www.nexusmods.com]
    • This mod introduces additional cutscenes to the Battle of Ostagar.
    • It is not recommended for first-time players (it contains spoilers for one of the characters).
  • Fare ye well Duncan[nexusmods.com]
    • It adds a small cutscene after the last dialog with Duncan.
    • I did not install this mod because I think the scene's mood reveals the fate of this particular character.

Endgame cutscenes (Spoilers)
Epilogue - rewrites
These mods introduce rewrites to both Origins and Awakenings epilogues, in order to prevent them from contradicting events and lore established in subsequent games. It also includes new slides for several options/ conditions that were not addressed in the original epilogues.
Reshade
  • This appears to be the best Reshade, by far, among those that are still available or functional.
  • Please be aware that this Shader may have an impact on your game's overall performance. Despite the fact that I have an old laptop, I still use it.

How to install
  • Download Reshade[reshade.me].
  • Extract the preset after downloading it from Nexus Mods.
  • Place "B1NCH1CKENN v1.1.ini" in the "bin_ship" directory* ("...\Dragon Age\bin_ship").
  • To begin, execute "ReShade Setup" and choose the "DA:O" option, then DirectX 9. Afterwards, browse for "B1NCH1CKENN v1.1" and select it. Click "Next" to continue.
  • Upon completion of the download, shut down the application.
  • Start the game. Open ReShade by pressing the "Home" key. This will initiate the tutorial. Simply click "Continue" to proceed, and then "Finish."
  • Once completed, ensure that all six effects are active: Clarity, MagicHDR, LumaSharpen, FilmicSharpen, prod80_02, and prod80_04.
  • I prefer to leave prod80_04 unchecked (like this[imgur.com]) to produce a warmer tone in the lighting, albeit slightly less realistic.

* "bin_ship" folder location: upon right-clicking the game on Steam, select "Properties", proceed to the "Installed files" tab, and finally "Browse".

How to uninstall
  • Execute "ReShade_Setup", select the game (DA:O), the DirectX 9 version, and then "Uninstall ReShade and Effects".
Every mod I've installed Pt.1
Lore-friendly: As previously stated, I chose the mods I've installed with the goal of preserving the game's lore as much as possible while also enhancing the gameplay, improving the graphics/making it more visually appealing, and adding variety.

Some of these mods require additional files in order to work properly. If this is the case, a warning will appear prior to the download. To successfully install, it is imperative to follow the instructions provided on the description page or within the file itself (some of which include "README" files).

Be mindful of potential conflicts among mods: many of these share duplicate files. To avoid these issues, be sure to thoroughly read the "After Installation (Fixing Incompatibilities)" section of the guide, as well as the installation instructions and mod descriptions. Conflicts are most likely to occur with mods that affect clothing or equipment.

Since I am currently playing the game, it is possible for this list to be updated in the future.

Bug fixes (DA:O & Awakening) and Other Fixes
All mods were installed, except "TSM Templar Armour Fixes". I installed "Dialogue Tweaks" simply to watch Wynne confront the Warden about being a blood mage.
  • "Dain's Fixes":
    • "Core", "Bug Fixes", "Cosmetic" and "Tweaks": everything installed.
    • "Quality of Life" installed:
      • Apply party buffs to new members
      • Display received items
      • Fast move out of combat
      • Hide modal AoE VFX
      • Hide modal VFX
      • Hide weapon VFX crusts
      • Hide weapon VFX telekinetic
      • HoH strength req
      • Modal exploration irritations
      • Party skill for disarm
      • Reactivate modals outside combat
      • Stealing Cooldown
      • Stealing no stealth drop
    • "Tweaks" - I didn't install:
      • Random encounter frequency
      • Random encounter frequency (Awakening)
    • "Extras" installed:
      • Autoloot kills (conservative)
      • Desire Demon Nightmare
      • Destroyer
      • Dual Weapon Sweep Crits
      • Modcore **NEW**
      • Ranged talent aim time
      • Show DPS in inventory
  • "Awakening Runes Fixes" - "DWE HAL to armor - CIR SIL to weapon"
  • "Vigilance Fix and Rescaled": Sword fixed without rescaling ("Textures" folders deleted).

Missing DLC
Everything was installed, including the "Original Blood Dragon Armor (v1.0)".

Quality of-Life Mods
  • QoL Pt. 1 - I've installed everything, except "Mouse Cursors for 4k DAO".
    • "TSM Random Encounters are Less Random in DAO": "Less Old Tegrin" (Optional File)
    • "More Detailed Tooltips": "More Detailed Tooltips - Fixes and Tweaks".

  • QoL Pt. 2 - I've installed everything, with the exception of "Rename Dog - Mabari Name Change" and "Redcliffe Better Siege".
    • Although I did not install either of the two mods for the transfer of DLC items to Awakening, as I have yet to start playing the expansion, I do intend to install the "DLC in Awakening and Awakening Fixes" mod.
    • "Chevalier and Templar Armors guaranteed" + "Chevalier Armor Set Bonus Change"
    • "TSM No RNG Fade Wall Plus": "No RNG Fadewall Plus" + "Dragonbone Fade Wall".

  • QoL Pt. 3 & 4 - I've only installed "Advanced Tactics" and "The Winter Forge" (I use it for swapping item stat bonuses - "Forgesmith's tools").
    • "The Winter Forge": "Lastest release" + "Compatibility Patch for FtG Scaled UI Mod" + "TWF - Cheating tweaks".
    • I may also opt to install the "Scale Inventory Script" during the course of playing Awakening.

QoL: Skipping content
"Skip Intro Movies" (not a Mod) is enabled.
  • I may choose to install additional mods if I want to re-play the game (or only a section, for some reason).

Main (Re)Textures (HD)
Everything is installed, except "YAHD - CATACHR1SM Retextures HD 2.0" (and "Low-impact alternatives").

Character Creation (CC)
Except for the "Orlesian Warden Appreciation" mod, I think I ended up installing most "CC Mods". Some of them were installed as prerequisites for other mods.
I've only chosen to install the "More CC Tattoo Colors" and "More Hairstyles" mods from "More Options." The other mods installed were "prerequisite mods".

Companions & NPCs
  • (DA:O and Awakening) Alistair, Anders, Loghain, Morrigan, Oghren, Sigrun, Velanna, and Zevran: "Unique Face Textures for Companions" (+ "Chasind Eyepaint for Morrigan")
  • Dog: "Puppy Eyes" (blue).
  • Leliana: "Thedas Redone - Companions" (default version with freckles).
  • Shale: "Shale Retextured HD" (+ "New Normals for Shale").
  • Sten: "Sten of the Beresaad" (+ "YAHD - Sten of the Beresaad HD 1.2") and "Sten - No Clothes".
  • Wynne and Anora: "DAO Companion Morphs".
  • (Awakening) Justice: "SJCs Vanilla Face Textures Replacements JUSTICE SKIN" (from the "SJC's Vanilla Face Textures Replacements" mod).
  • (Awakening) Nathaniel and the Howe family: "The Howes of Amaranthine" (Nathaniel's "updated" version").

"ILS Headmorphs"
  • Installed morphs for Bella, Berwick, Isabella (DA2 version), Jarvia (with piercings), Marjolaine (DA:O and Leliana's Song), and Rica.
Every mod I've installed Pt.2
As I have already mentioned, despite the often lower (sometimes significantly lower) resolution of most clothing replacement mods compared to the "Main (Re)Textures", it may still be worth installing them: for certain NPCs and factions, they increase the sense of coherence and, more importantly, the mods add to the overall diversity of the game.
This is why I decided to install "Unique Characters Overhaul", even though some of the clothing has noticeably lower resolution, especially at close range.

Some of the mods that replace clothing or equipment may clash with the "Main (Re)Textures". Make sure they have a higher loading priority (you can place them in the "toolsetexport" directory).

NPCs (cont.)
  • Non-specific NPC mods
    • "SJC's Vanilla Face Textures Replacements"
    • "Unique Characters Overhaul"
      • Since I am still playing the game (I have only completed "The Broken Circle"), I will most likely remove even more files from this mod.
      • I installed this mod shortly after my arrival in Lothering; therefore, I have yet to observe its impact on the NPCs in Ostagar. I've checked the NPCs in the Human Noble origin, but for the most part, I prefer their original appearance.
I haven't installed any files that replace the clothes of Chantry NPCs (including Templars), because I appreciate the notion that different parts of Thedas might have distinct robes/armor. I also don’t like how the modded templar armor behaves when the NPC moves.
      • I didn't install "Kirkwall Chantry and Templars HD by srnk".
      • "1. Origins" --> "3. Human Noble": “1. Named NPCs” and "2. Servants" deleted
      • "2. Main Quests":
        • "1. Ostagar" --> "5. Named NPCs": "pre100cr_uldred.utc" deleted
        • "2. Lothering" --> "2. Chasind" - I deleted everything except “hf_lot100_chasindf.mor
        • "2. Lothering" --> "1. Dane's Refuge": “lot120cr_commander.utc”, “lot120cr_soldier.utc” and “lot120cr_soldier2.utc” deleted.
        • "4. Broken Circle": "cir240cr_uldred_human.utc", "cir320cr_templar_spirit.utc", and "cir310cr_templar_dreamer.utc" deleted.
        • "7. A Paragon of her Kind" --> "1. The Gates of Orzammar": “orz100cr_imrek.utc” and “orz100cr_knight_escort.utc” deleted.
        • "13. Epilogue" --> "1. Named NPCs": “epi200cr_zevran” deleted.
      • "4. Side Quests": "7. Couriers" and "8. Mage Collective" folders deleted.
      • "6. Denerim":
        • "1. Marketplace": "lite_fite_widow_sara.utc", "den200cr_casavir.utc", and "nrd_dencr_liselle.utc" deleted.
        • "3. Taverns": "den100cr_shaevra.utc", "den100cr_bouncer_1", "den100cr_bouncer_2", and "den100cr_bouncer_3" deleted.
        • "5. Encounters": “White Falcons” folder deleted.
      • "8.DLC" –> "1. Awakening":
        • "4. Shadows of the Blackmarsh": "stb100cr_kristoffs_corpse.utc" deleted.
        • "11. Chantry" folder deleted.
      • "9. Chantry": folder deleted.
      • "10. Items" --> "3. Cousland": “Helm Variation 2”
      • "11. Loot Drops": "Optional Robe Drops" folder deleted.
      • "z. Optional Files":
        • "2. Robes for Flemeth Options":
          • "1a. Red Vanilla Robe": "3. Companion Quests" folder deleted.
          • "2. DA2 Robe": "2. Main Quests" folder deleted.
          • This way, Flemeth's clothes will only change during Morrigan's quest.
        • "3. Kossith Armory NPCS": Everything was deleted, with the exception of "1a. Epilogue Sten".
        • "3b. (Mixed armors) Kossith Armory NPCS": "1. Sten" and "1a. Epilogue Sten" deleted.
        • "4. Arl Eamon Clothing Options":
          • I chose vanilla clothing for "3. The Arl of Redcliffe".
          • I chose "Tint Version 2" for "11. The Landsmeet".
          • I chose "Ferelden Pack Version" for "13. Epilogue".
        • "5. Starting Armor for Zevran" deleted.
        • "6. Grand Cleric Choices" deleted.
        • "7. Chasind Female Options": "2. Vanilla" and "3. (Optional) Morrigan Robe Version" deleted.
        • "8. Modded Noble Dresses" deleted.
        • "9. Ferelden Pack Isolde Option" deleted.
        • "10. Circle Mage Wynne": Everything has been installed, even the epilogue.
        • "12. Shaevra Options" deleted.
        • "13. (Optional) Armored Teagan": file installed.
        • "14. Armor for Devera": "Rogue Version" folder deleted.
        • "15. Ash Warriors"– I chose to install “1. Loincloth Fashion”

  • NPCs: Elves
    • "TSM Elfy Ghost Boy"
    • Elves of Ferelden (beta)” + “Elves of Ferelden HD
      • The mod "Unique Characters Overhaul" has higher loading priority.
      • Removed Zevran's epilogue file (I have another mod for it).

  • NPCs: Mages
    • "Tranquil Brand 2.0"

  • NPCs: Dwarves
    • "Casteless Brand and Dwarven Tattoo Restoration"
      • Deleted "dm_genfl_oghren" (Oghren's files).

  • NPCs: Nobles
    • "Lady Isolde"
    • "Female Noble Clothing Overhaul" + "Noble Dress Overhaul" + "Female Noble Clothing and Noble Dress Overhaul Compatibility Patch"

    • "Marjolaine - with weapons"

      • I only installed “Lothering Chasind Female - Medium Armor” (Optional file).
    • "TSM A Shield for Ser Gilmore"
    • "TSM Better Vigil's Keep Ghouls and Prisoners"
    • "TSM More Believable Fade Duncan"

      • "proportions_dwarf" + "df_underwear"
    • "tmp7704's Human Female Proportions Fix"
    • "Neutral Female Armor (Medium and Heavy edition)"
      • I also installed "Dwarf proportions fix adjustment" and "Human proportions fix adjustment" (optional files).

  • Mods for sequel-specific companions/NPCs
    • Cullen: “Retconned Cullen” (Hazel Eyes)
    • Merrill: I haven't installed any specific morphs yet.
    • Isabella: "ILS Headmorphs" (DA2 version) + "DA2 Isabela and Flemeth to DAO by hsli" (To install only the outfit, follow the instructions in the main readme file within the "Unique Characters Overhaul" mod).

Hello everyone! Apologies for not being very active lately.

@DatApo, regarding the issues you're facing, I'm not entirely sure what's going wrong since it's been a while since I last installed the game. I recommend first installing only the Ultimate Edition, then launching the game to see if it works. If you're missing any content not included in the Ultimate Edition (which covers most of the DLC), check out my "Missing Content" section—it should be easy to follow. After that, I would suggest applying the 4GB Patch.

Hello everyone! I need some help regarding Dragon Age Origins' installation. I've yet to play the game, so I don't know if installing the mods was succesful.

I've downloaded the Ultimate Edition, installed both the Ultimate Edition and Awakening, and I already patched the 4GB launcher. After that, I try to run the updaters for the DLC (DAOU_UpdateAddinsXML_Steam), but they never work. Both of them start, the progress bar reaches the same point every time, and nothing happens. Program keeps running forever.

Could someone please help me? It's been a while since I played this wonderful game, and I'm reeeeally craving it right now. Thanks in advance!

First of all: Thank you very, very much for putting so much effort into this guide! I tried to follow it as closely as i could (ran into some troubles, but could fix them) and I could actually start and load a save just fine. But weirdly, as i tried to play again, it crashes when loading any save file. I tried minimizing the Texture Deatil as suggested, but I still couldn't load the save files or start a new game at all. anyone has advice for me?

@Endarire Hi! I sincerely appreciate your suggestions. I will attempt to update the guide when I have a bit more time available. However, I think there are mods present in this guide that can effectively heal/prevent injuries.

While I find the concept of archiving and sharing the mods appealing, I am uncertain if it is the most suitable approach. First and foremost, I cannot share the mods without the authors' consent. Furthermore, I would need to reset everything and start from scratch, as I have experimented with many mods to create this guide, and my overwrite folder is quite chaotic.

How may we get a prepackaged ZIP, RAR, or similar set of archives of your mods so we can quickly start testing your mod wad on our end?

Thankee!
