Starting...
Hey guys, This is a semi-quick guide to help you all get started on your quest to save Sao Pablo or w/e from the Warlock's nightmare. If you have anything nice or fun to add, please do so on the comment section and also ignore the typos in here.. there are many!

As the game suggust, play the intro. It is not that complicated, so just mimic what the soldiers (and occasionally your ghost) tells you to do. Keep in mind that this game is intended for Controller use so if you use keyboard+mouse, you will need to know that Left Click=basic attack and Right Click=Special Attack. For some crazy reason, the game does not tell you that.

After you finish the tutorial, you will be granted a "Special Skill" that you can use. Keep in mind that "Mana" is NOT consumed and is only used to capture souls (which I will get into later in the guide.)

Also, I strongly recomend you die as a lvl 1 in any area so you can reach limbo and aquire your 2nd special skill. Its handy to grab it :) If you have any other toons unlocked you can switch to them by interacting with their statue and switch so you can get it again.

With that said, Good luck and enjoy the read.
Into the Abyss
This game, like many others, has a decent storyline but lacks thoroughness. It is a dungeon crawler and the storyline is kinda fun, morbid, and even generic. Read the few slides and enjoy it. Some of these slides get old and u can just press the "SpaceBar" to rush through them.

Once you get past the small clips of the story past the tutorial, you will see a merchant before you delve into the abyss. I Strongly recomend you NOT to buy anything from any merchant unless its a nice Immune trinket, pots, or sometimes even a captured soul. The reason for this is simple, its Over priced and more than likely you will find a better one on your way down to see the main boss, The warlock.

Once you talked to everyone in the village, you can jump down into the abyss and now you start the journey into the unknown.

Once in, attempt to play SAFE!!!!! Keep in mind that if you die, you DIE and lose everything except for your weapon, and occasionally a trinket. I can not emphasize enough on the play safe part since you will lose pots, and most of your stuff when you die.

A soldier will take your place and has to find Shrine in order to revive you. Keep in mind that the shrines can only revive you once per level and it has to be a "Hero" shrine. There are 2 types of shrines, but makes sure u go to one that has a statue of you and your friends, not the one that has a skull on it. The screen on the bottom is the type of shrine you want to get to. All other shrines are troll shrines.

If you had a "Camp Token" and did not use it, more than likely its gone. I have tested this out 4 times and not once did it recover. Remember that there are 3 tiers of "Camp Tokens" and the tier basically just states how many times you can respawn at that location.

The soldier is rather weak, but can hold his own if you master his techniques and combos (or lack there of lol.) Keep in mind that each character has their own soldier type to rescue if they die. If the soldier dies as well, you will revive (as Katrien, Monk, or Pinoy) if you used a Camp Token.

Remember that it is not wise to use these on levels near the top, save them for hard or moderate levels. If a Camp Token was not used, then you will be lead to limbo and will either start all over or chose a path if you restarted and had a camp token saved spot prior.
Hints, not Spoilers ;)
These are just small stuff I wish someone had told me before having to research things myself to make life much easier.

1) Mana: Mana in this game is not a regular consumable source, in fact, you can only consume it once and that is when it is completely full. You can gain mana several ways. The fastest way is by combos and placing mana points in your skills. I do not recomend you place any points in skills until you have ranked your combo meter to rank 3 (which is dubbed "Special Cancels" in game) and have trained a bit on how to use it.

[There are many, many, many, WAY too many guides out there on how to use this so I will spare you the details.] The other ways are simple, and that is just killing stuff and collecting mana jars if you are lucky. I do not recommend buying from merchants since yea, u can get mana fast either way.

2) Captured Souls: This is why Mana is so important. You can only capture souls your level or lower. For a list of what lvl you can capture them, scroll to "Unlockables." You activate it by pressing Attack {Left click} + Special Ability {Right Click} on your mouse simultaneously. It will look similar to the screen below.

If done right, a small cinematic will start with you casting a Blue spirit ball and hit/kill/damage nearby enemies. This ball will not go on forever so just make sure the enemy you want is nearby. Once they die within a time limit, they have a chance to drop a small fairy-like ball. pick this ball up and you can press "i" [Inventory,] select it, and press Enter to turn into it. On a side note, you can only carry ONE Captured Soul at a given time.

You can turn into this as many times as you desire as long as you have life on it. These captured souls have a full hp bar and some have a diffrent amount of life as you do so always having one on is a life saver, basically giving you 3 lives :)

You can also purchase these bad boys from random merchants or the merchant in the cathedral. They are relatively cheap and do serve as a nice backup so I recomend having these unless you are hardcore, like me, and just cap them while you are on your journey. Also, mind you that ANY soul that you have either purchased, captured, or unlocked during the Limbo mission can be purchased by the Merchant priest in the 3rd city.

As a Captured soul, you will take their appearance and have a red P1/P2 on it so your partner (if online) wont confuse you with the enemy.

3) Gold: This is a fast and easy subject. I usually hoard gold on any game so I did the solid thing when I started. Save all your monies and only buy the essentials. Seriously, you will get gold as fast as you spend it so it is always nice to have a few 100k laying around just in case. Items like Tapias Amulet, Curse Immunity rings, and so on are a MUST for nightmare missions.

4) Online games: Online games are fun, but stressful and not always a good idea. Your friend can hurt you with his/her attacks and vice versa so be careful when doing this. I strongly recomend you both get on a voip (Voice Over ip) like skype and talk it out. Its always best to stay a bit separated and have one on the left/one on the right so you guys wont get caught up in your own crossfire.

Keep in mind that gold and items are on a 1st find, 1st get basis. If you gather gold, it will not share between the party and can leave you being broke while your buddy gets al the goodies so make sure you guys share the loot. You can also drop the look via the Inventory menu.

The good thing to this is that you guys share experiance and unlockables while in party so that is a HUGE plus and probably the only reason why you should party with someone. Also, try not to be that GUY that purposely kills the host .....Bro, not cool! With that said, I believe that alot of the glitchs happen because of co-op but that is just a guess. I have yet to get glitched on local games, but to get an idea on what I mean, sometimes, the other player looks like he is halfway in the ground.

5) Cities: There are 3 starting points to where you can chose to start your journey. Most of these cities are a mix between Easy/Moderate/Hard rooms but the real prize is starting from room 3 or 6 instead of room 1.

To unlock the cities, before leaving a room, look at the directory and see if there is a link to that room that allows you to cross over to the next one. Once you cross over to that next room, that city is unlocked permanently and you can start from the corresponding city on your next game.

There is a way to cheat while chosing the cities. By creating a new game, chose a character you want to play, and on the city select screen, you can see a premade map on the right side of the book. The yellow spot tells you where the trasure room is located and what/where the boss is located. By simply ESC to the toon select and selecting a toon, you can see that the map has changed. Use this to your benefit when trying to buy and unlock Pincoya :)

6) Journal Logs: These logs will drop from random guys and as far as I am concerned, doesnt matter what it drops; you will gather the pages randomly. I did not research this as much as I wanted to because all i know is this: Get logs, and unlock lore.

These entries will unlock a page in the Warlock's Journal and it will explain about who/why he is the way he is. To be honest, it is actually a nice read and I do recommend it. You can read as they appear or just wait so you wont ruin the fun :)

7) Hidden Trasure Rooms: They spawn randomly and do not always have indicaters on where they are. Some rooms are just hidden and some have a small indent on the mini map.

The trick to these rooms is opposites attract! Some rooms are just made of rock so bash these suckers in until it breaks, but for the more complicated rooms, they require a certain spell or damage type. This is what I have gathered so far:

Firey walls- Use Cold damage
Ice walls- Fire damage
Vine Walls- Use either Charm/Curse weapons to open
Pink/purple walls- These are rare and I have only seen 2 throughout my runs, but I use poison on this and it worked.

8) Training: This feature is a VERY nice addition to the game where u can literally train to use any soul you have captured. To be brutally honest, I recomend you train on as many souls as you can because Nightmare is no walk in the park (at least foe me lol.) In training mode, the doll is stationary and moves with your attacks. Attempt to land as many combos as possible. Remember that the more damage/combos you land, the faster your mana bar is filled. you never know how good a soul is until you land a 10+ combo with it. If you would like to know more about advance tactics, here is a nice guide for advance mechanics.:

Unlockables
There are a few unlockables to this game. while most of it requires some luck and farming, others just take a bit of smart thinking and planing.

1) Unlock Ghost Monk: This guy is simple to unlock, but could use a bit of experience. I managed to unlock him by going into the easy mode (the 1st city) and going straight down. Usually after the 3rd or 4th room, a Nightmare version of Katrien, Monk, Pincoya, ect.. will appear and upon killing him/her, you can unlock monk. Seriously, if you have a Captured Soul, that can double your chances of winning.

Once unlocked, an instance will appear either when u end the game or die. looks something like this:

2) Pincoya: This one is tricky at 1st, but can be easy if you plan it right. The map here is easy as pie. It is basically a Treasure room with money and stuff. to unlock her, just gather up 25-30k gold and donate in the wishing well in the center of the map. It is a small map so dont worry :) however, i do recomend bringing in 30K just in case. If you have a friend with you, donating 15K each will unlock her. So there is that. This is how the map looks like, but its kind of hazy since Pinoy is hogging up all the space lol

3) Souls: As the section above, its easy to cap these guys. I do recomend maxing out the Cancel nodse 1st and placing the next points into Mana. this will help you aquire more mana on hit and successful cancel combos. Once you capture a soul, or buy it, it will be forever yours to have in your training guide to practice the playstyle so you wont die as easily. To access this just go to the Menu and click on training. On there you can train to your hearts delight and do what you want.

Here is a list of all the souls you can capture and what lvl you need to be to unlock them. Thanks to many people from the PS3 forums and Steam forums for this info <3

once you find a soul that tickles your fancy, and you start to train, you will notice that action canceling can really help you clear rooms faster. So yes, i would strongly recomend you put points into cancel action. Here is a guide that can help you learn more about it. There4 were so many guides for it I decided not to put it in my own, mainly because this was a starters guide. However, if you would like to know more about it:

Anrothan  [author] Nov 5, 2015 @ 2:55pm
lol yea I agree. but it is a dungeon crawler. There are 3 settings as well and oh man does it get hard.

but its not bad at all and grinding doesnt take long at all either.

thanks for this guide, was helpful. This game is designed so weird. It doesnt explain much and some thing just feel pointless or other things are just fucking weird, like why is it called mana? There is no reason at all and that mechanic isnt even explained properly. The game also doesnt explain where to go or what to do, just go down there and do "things".
Also you cant just beat the game, you HAVE to grind some levels...

have you tried to relog?
