Lost River's Collapse
By 11crystal
From day one of Lost River's mysterious collapse, watch through the eyes of a stray wolfdog caught in the crossfire of this brutal trial.

Disclaimer: 1. This is NOT what the developers of WolfQuest had in mind for what truly happened to LR, this is my own interpretation of these events with my minds very wild and desensitized imagination. This is a much darker, and sadder interpretation, there may be certain topics that some readers are very sensitive about, and some parts of this book hint at devocalization (aka "bark softening.)
2. I am trying to spread awareness about this cruel and unfair treatment of dogs and animals in general. This is also ILLEGAL, so please do not try to hire any vets who are willing to do this. This is a very dangerous procedure often leading to gagging, coughing, aspiration of vomit and food along with difficulty breathing, ultimately leading to death. Please don't ever suggest or be part of this method of torture for dogs or ANY animal in general. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and I hope you enjoy the book.

Day 1: Stray
I quietly pad through the alleyways, carefully watching for any other dogs before approaching a trash bin with fresh pizza, at least to me. I ate quickly, knowing other strays would take my prize. I hear low growling, my hackles raise, and turn only to be met with two large dogs and a Chihuahua.

"You wanna give me a bite mutt?" The Chihuahua says to me, he was their leader.

"I'm good." I say, warily eyeing them, prepared for an attack.

"'Sharin's carin'" The doberman says, in a mocking tone.

All three burst out laughing at the statement.

I take my chance and yank out the rest of my prize and an opened can, "Oh yeah? TAKE THIS!" I bark, throwing the can at them before grabbing my prize and bolting down the street. I didn't have strength on my side—but speed? Hell yes.

"HEY! GET BACK HERE MUTT! NOBODY TRICKS US!" The Chihuahua barks, "AFTER HIM!"

The bigger dogs bolted after me.

"AYE, I NEED A RIDE!" The chihuahua barks.

The Saint Bernard rushed back, lowering his body before the chihuahua jumped on.

"ONWARD!"

F*** I think as I bolt down the alleyway, jumping off very decontaminated surfaces. I'm stopped at a dead end, I turn my head before smirking to myself, "Bingo." I squeeze through the tight alley to make my glorious escape.

I felt a sharp pain in my ankle and yelp, before throwing the object off, not realizing it was the chihuahua, I heard a yelp, S***

The other two dogs were on the other side, but I jumped over them, landing behind them before continuing my escape.

"So long, suckers! And remember, finders keepers!" I bark. I was gone with the wind, and there was no way in hell I was staying there to be torn apart. I knew of a secret passage that they didn't, one with food, one with freedom, and one with one gorgeous dame. I like to call it, Carmella's tunnel. Once I squish out I stagger forward only to be met with an accidental nose boop, with a little tomato sauce, cheese, and the gaze of those deep brown chocolate eyes. I jump back, averting my gaze sheepishly.

"Oh hello there," Carmella smiled.

"Hi," I reply sheepishly, before looking into her gaze.

"I wasn't expecting such a dramatic entrance," she jokes.

I chuckle sheepishly, "Yeah, sorry 'bout that. Did I make you feel uncomfortable?"

She playfully sighed, shaking her head, "No, no you didn't. Also, you have pizza sauce smeared on your nose."

"Wait really, hold on let me get that." I say, attempting to lick my nose, but instead lick my maw. Suddenly I feel her lick my nose for me to remove the contaminants.

She backs away, observing her work, before smiling in satisfaction, "Much better."

I look down at my paws, slightly digging them into the dirt, "So, how was your day?"

"It was good, your's?"

"Same."

She set the pizza slice down before sliding it over to me, "I got you this, I thought you'd be hungry."

I stare at the slice, my stomach grumbled, I had eaten a lot less than I had initially thought, I look up at her unsure, "Are you sure? Aren't you going to get in trouble?"

"I'm sure, plus, I got it with extra sausage." She grinned, gesturing me to eat it.

"Thanks," I smile before devouring the slice, "This is really good." I say with a mouthful of pizza.

"You're welcome." She smiles again, her tail wagging.

In response mine does the same.

"Carmella, get yo ass in here, dinner isn't over!" Carmella's fellow Pizzeria dog ordered.

"Sorry, Maggie's calling me, see you, when?" Carmella asked.

"Tomorrow, I mean, see you tomorrow." I say before cringing, What is wrong with me?

"See you tomorrow, stay safe out there, street boy." She grinned.

I grinned, "See you later."

"CARMELLA! GET YOUR ASS OVER HERE!" Maggie barked louder.

"Carmella, sweetheart, you'll miss seconds!" The pizzeria's owner called in a much more jolly tone.

"Bye." She smiled before gracefully padding away.

"Bye." I say, slowly, sitting down, watching her disappear behind the corner. I sigh, dazed by her perfection. Her adorable floppy ears, beautiful coat pattern, those deep brown eyes, that smell of pizza radiating off her, and her amazing personality.

And then there's me, the stray wolfdog that looks like a bucket of coal dust was dumped on me, in some spots it looks like the dust missed in my lower body, my dangerous amber eyes, my size, my physical appearance, all screaming my wolf linage. How can I expect to ever be with anyone so... perfect.

I finally stand up padding into the alley way, curling up into a ball, slowly closing my eyes a fatigue consumes me, unaware of what hell of a day brings tomorrow.
Day 2: Missing
I wake up the next day, immediately padding towards the alley where Carmella and I met last night.

I sit down, waiting, at first my tail wagged, I panted happily, I smiled.

Hours passed and there was still no sign of her, I had begun to loose my joyous attitude.

Where is she? I thought as I waited, out of nowhere I was slammed into a wall, dark amber eyes met my terrified gaze. They were full of hate, they narrowed at me.

"Who are you?" The older dame questioned, coldly.

"I-I don't have---" I started, before she slammed her paws into my chest, I grunted.

"Speak up, I can't hear you! Where is she? What did you do to her?" The elder pressed, more violently.

"I-I don't know who your talking about!" I cried, that's when it hit me. This was Maggie, the same pizza smell radiated off of her as Carmella's did, and she was talking about... Carmella.

She growled at me, "Well, won't you tell me?"

I narrow my gaze at her, "Wouldn't you know? You are Carmella's friend, aren't you?"

"Don't disrespect your elders!" She snarled, "What did you do to her?"

"I DIDN'T TO ANYTHING, OKAY!" I barked, shoving her off, angry tears filled my eyes, threatening to fall.

She slowly stood up glaring at me.

"I don't know where she is." I say, quietly, almost a whisper.

Her gaze softens, she realizes I don't know either, "You truly don't know what happened, do you?"

I meet her gaze and shake my head slowly, "What happened?"

She gestured me to follow, and I cooperated. I was lead to a sidewalk outside of the bowling alley, several missing posters were hung up.

"She went missing last night, the chef has been doing everything in his power to spread awareness, but she's been nowhere to be found. Nobody knows what happened." Maggie explained, "I assumed you had to do with it because she met you very often, so either you're a very good liar, or you genuinely don't know."

"I don't know," I honestly say, my paw grazing the poster, I'll find you, I promise.

I hadn't realized Maggie was staring at me, reading me like a book, figuring me out.

"That's what I thought when I first lost someone of value to me." Maggie says, quietly, almost like she was hoping I wouldn't hear her.

I simply acted like I didn't, knowing it would make the situation worse, but it was obvious on what she was implying. Even as harsh as she seems, Maggie had a lover or a close friend to her earlier in her life, perhaps a family member. She understands the pain of losing a loved one, unlike me, who understands the pain of being alone, with no one to rely on but yourself... well, at least before that night.

Being slow to trust others, Carmella proved her worth to me, but Maggie hasn't. What if she did something to her, what does she know? What is she hiding? Those thoughts kept circling my mind. She doesn't trust me, so why should I? What has she done to earn my trust? Nothing.

"Over here." Maggie barks, it lead to a torn, black glove, it smelled like... Carmella, "Whoever this glove belongs to, clearly had a bad day with Carmella."

I nod quietly, picking it up, "We should keep going, maybe we'll find more." I say.

She nods in agreement as we continued to follow the trail.

We followed it for hours, only to be lead to a dead end.

"Dammit." Maggie curses under her breath, with a groan of frustration before sitting down. Her back hunches forwards due to age.

"The trails gone, but how?"

"They must've used some sort of vehicle as a one time use."

"Interesting." I reply, as I look around, scanning for any more traces.

"You should head back, I'm sure she's fine." Maggie shrugged, before padding off.

I notice a man in a chicken costume shoveling snow, it had snowed last night so I wasn't surprised, but he had a bloodied bandage on his right hand.

But what if she isn't? I think as I pad to my little corner in the alleyway, then another thought hit me, Who is that man? And why was that glove so close to him?
Day 3: Captured
I wake up and pad along the street, my nose down in search of Carmella before suddenly I smell a strong scent of human. My hackles raise, by ears pin to my head in suspicion, I feel a thin wire surround my neck and I'm suddenly yanked to the left. I yelp in bewilderment only to be met with the cold silver eyes of an Animal Control Officer.

"Oh, look at this one, he's gorgeous." The officer gives me a toothy grin with a golden tooth replacing one of his own.

My ears bend in uncertainty, my tail tucked in submission.

"Bring 'em to the shelter, he's bound to get adopted." Another says, as the officer shoves me into the back of the vehicle.

I yelp in pain before my vision goes dark.

I wake up in a cage surrounded by mesh, I look around anxiously before spotting a door. I begin ramming into it.

This caused a riot with the other dogs as they barked, a few howled.

"SILENCE!" A human calles.

I stop, giving up before noticing a hook holding the door shut.

I try to poke my nose through, Maybe if I could unlatch it... Or maybe I'm an optimistic idiot. My thoughts contradict each other. After five minutes of trying I groan in frustration, rolling backward. My back slams into the stone floor, but I didn't care about the pain. My belly was exposed and humans were approaching my cage to check out what the commotion was all about. I quickly roll over and began wagging my tail and panting, like those... housepets, Ugh do, for everything, like a "good boy" would, right?

They stop at my cage, look in, giving me an unconvinced glace.

I sigh, roll onto my back again, and start doing these... adorable little positions. I was practically begging to be prey, but if that’s what it takes to get out.

"Aww." The Shelter Attendant cooed, before opening the mesh door and approaching me. Her hand outstretched to me.

I sniff her hand before noticing the cage door is open and make a run for it.

"HEY! GET BACK HERE!" She shouted.

"No thank you!" I bark in response, speeding up, a smile stretching on my face as I see the glass door to freedom.

And then the snare wraps around my neck and yanks be backward... yet again.

I yelp in response as another attendant glares at me.

"You're a troublemaker, aren't you?" He snarls.

The woman clicks her tongue in agreement.

I nod my head, vigorously, then realize I was doing the wrong action and began shaking my head vigorously.

The woman sighs before the man begins dragging me down the hall.

I ragdoll in defiance.

"Isolate him, and apply him for training, starting tomorrow. Also, no treats until he starts behaving." The man ordered.

My ears perk up at the word treat, I lift my head off the floor looking up at him, my tail begins to wag hopefully. Other dogs that were surrendered, whatever that means, had said treat means good things happen. Or walk.

"No treat." He growled at me.

My ears bend back, my tail stops wagging, and I press my face against the floor again. Lairs I think.

The Receptionist nodded, mumbling under her breath as she typed, "Isolate, apply for training, and no treats 'till he starts behaving." She looked up as the paper printed, "Alright, he's all set."

"Good." He growls as he continues to drag me down the hall, we passed cages of dogs, cats, and then I was dragged into a room. He un-snared me, "Until you start behaving, you're not hanging out with any of your friends."

I smirk, Friends, yeah sure. Like we hang out at all.

He opens the door.

I made a run for it, I was about to be free, then I heard a loud slam, felt a sharp pain, and yelped as I recoiled, "F*** you." I growl under my breath before seeing blood dripping onto the floor. I groan in frustration, before wiping it off.

It just kept going.

I wipe it again.

It dripped again.

I wipe it off again, "Don't you dare." I snarl.

Another drop.

I groan even louder, before slumping my back and padding over to a corner, curling up into a ball and letting my unknown exhaustion consume me.
Day 4: The Van
I wake up to the smell of food. I stretch my limbs out and pad over to it and stared at the bowl, "What the hell?" I flip over the bowl, letting the contents spill, and roll over. They were these brown pellets, I hesitantly stare at one before eating it.

It crunched in my mouth, and it was annoyingly dry, but at least it wasn't moldy. I shrug before eating the others, and then noticing a bowl of water. I tip it over and lapped up the puddle.

My ears perk as I hear the door open, I whip around to see a chain leash and a muzzle.

I smirk at the same man that snared me yesterday, "I'm not going down that easily."

"Are you mocking me?" The man growls, of course he didn't understand me before he charged at me.

I jumped out of the way as he crashed into the wall and groans in frustration.

He charges at me again.

I dodge, but I didn't realize he had hooked up the chain to the wall and was holding it in such a way to serve as a trap.

I trip over the trip wire, yelping in surprise.

He pins me down.

I begin thrashing around under him, but to no avail as he muzzles me.

"No so tough now, are you?" He smirks as he unchains the wall.

I glare at him.

He tugs at the chain.

I sit down stubbornly.

He tugs harder, this time pulling me forward.

I let him drag me across the ground. Maybe looking miserable will force him to release me.

...That absolutely failed. I was dragged to this training center for dogs.

"There's the new pup, welcome to class buddy," the instructor smiled.

I simply glared at her, my hackles were slightly raised, but not high enough to be noticeable. Something about her screamed fake. From the tone of her voice, to the smile that she seemed to draw on her face hiding something.

"He better be behaved by next week for adoption day." He growled.

"Yes sir." She grinned, waving as he exited.

I kept a wary eye on her.

Her smile immediately turned into a frown, "You will be fixed."

Then I notice a white and orange flash pass the window, I bolt towards it, "CARMELLA!" I jump through the window and glass shatters. Cuts everywhere, but I ignored the pain and just kept going.

"HEY! IT'S NOT DISMISSAL YET!" The woman shouts, but I also ignored her.

I run down the street, before I skid to a stop behind a pile of dirt. There was a sign that read, Lab Parking, Carmella was sitting next to it.

The person in black, with a missing glove. He held the dollar bill in front of her, "You better give me good money, unlike last time."

She simply stared at him.

A white van pulled up next to them.

It opened up as two people, one in a lab coat and the other in a hazmat suit step out.

The one in a lab coat had long, auburn hair, blue eyes, and a slender frame. Her name tag read, Ashley.

"This was the dog you asked for, now, pay up." He ordered, holding his hand out.

Ashley snapped her fingers and two men in black uniforms and bulletproof suits pinned him to the ground.

"I thought we had a deal!" He barked desperately.

"You truly think a facility would take in a dog through illegal trading? We said, with Mr. Green's consent."

"You lied to me! How dare--" An officer knocked him out and dragged him into the truck.

I sighed in solace.

"Take the dog too." Ashley ordered.

My eyes widen and then I charge, "DON'T TOUCH HER!"

Ashley simply smiled, "Take that one out too."

Suddenly my vision goes dark.
Chapter 5: Mutts and Miracles
I wake up panting, I was in a kennel. I can hardly move in it. I begin ramming into it, attempting to break the metal. I wince in pain, I realize my body is covered in bandages.

Suddenly, what seems to be a she-wolf on stilts approached the cage. "You need to calm down, otherwise you'll get in trouble, and you don't want that." She warns in a whisper. She has a bronze forehead, cheeks, black coat with blue undertones, a few white spots, and this strange, quirky elegance to her was beautiful, in a strange way, almost... alluring.

"Who are you?" I growl.

She sat down, and placing a slender paw on her chest, "My name's Miracle, what's yours."

"I don't have one." I mumble, attempting to turn around, I groan in frustration and place my head on my paws with a frown.

She simply sat there, as if to wait until I said something.

"Can you not? It's making me feel uncomfortable." I growl.

"Sorry, I'll leave," she says, lowering her head, until her back was hunched, her ears, folded, and her shorter than average tail tucks.

"Wait, hold on, stay," I say, curiously.

Her ears perk up and she turns around, her tail wagging.

"How are you outside of the kennels?" He asks.

"Oh, yeah, that. ...Everyone asks about that..." She mumbled under her breath before continuing in a brighter tone, "I was their first experiment that was successful, aka their miracle, hence my name, and since I don't break any rules I get special treatment. You can earn it too, that is, if you don't break any rules."

"Are miracles different from others?" I ask.

"Miracles are the first of the successful experiments that aren't prototypes, then those who are also successful ones after miracles are just called mutts. I wonder what their going to do to you. Lately they've been making these weird, half man, half wolf hybrids they call 'werewolves.'" She explains.

"Are you a... 'werewolf'?" I inquire.

"Oh, no, not even close. Do you want to know what I am?" She asks.

I pause, contemplating on it, before nodding, "Yeah, sure."

"Naturally I am a Lycan Shepard---a mix between a Blue Bay Shepard and a Black German Shepard---, Grey wolf, Arctic wolf, Vancouver Coastal Sea wolf, Siberian Husky, Saluki, coyote, and dingo, but they also injected hyena, red fox, swift fox, arctic fox, kit fox, and maned wolf genes into me too," the she wolf explained.

I blink at her in confusion.

"You have no idea what half of these are, do you?" Miracle asked.

I nod.

"It's not that important," she replied.

"Miracle! It's time for your mice!" Some feminine voice called.

Miracle's ears drooped, "Oh no, I hate meat." She sighed, "Well, I must be off, see you later, hopefully!" Then she whisked away.

Then two more humans approach my cage.

I back further into my cage, snarling, ears pinned to my head.

One hooks a snare around my neck, pulls me out.

The second held a siring in her hand, her hazel eyes showed remorse as she whispered, "I know, I'm sorry honey," before stabbing the needle into my flank

I yowl and try to wriggle out, but my vision went dark, yet again.
Chapter 6: I, Chinook, the 15th Tracking Mutt
I wake up on a dog version of a hospital bed, my throat feels sore, I still feel drowsy, and I feel like I was run over a truck. As I regain consciousness I finally notice the white thing obstructing my vision.

It was made of plastic, it felt uncomfortable, it was a cone. Inside of it I feel a collar like thing that was slightly heavy, and there were new bandages still concealing most of my body, but either way I wanted to get these foreign objects off me, they smell bitter, and like humans.

I begin scratching at it, as I continue I scratch more vigorously before I groan, which sounded hoarse and kind of human, and roll back, exposing my vulnerable belly, before instinctively rolling over to protect my belly in case any threats decide to end me right then and there. I sit back up and look around the white room, with absolutely nothing on its walls. I decide to wait and see what happens.

It was a good ten minutes before I even see a shadow pass the door.

Another twenty minutes, nothing.

Thirty? Nope.

I slowly begin to drift off before the door opens, I perk my ears, and look up. Why aren't my hackles raising? I think.

It was a different scientist, I suddenly remember seeing a flash of those same hazel eyes that opened my cage before I was knocked out. I growl softly.

She had this mesmerizing, long, caramel colored hair that lay on her shoulders, gentle hazel eyes, almost comforting, she had a rose beige skin-tone. Yet she smelled of wolf, and she hid her ears, but why, "Hello, how are you feeling, Chinook?" She asks, her voice was warm and welcoming.

I didn't respond, I am an animal, what would a human understand. Wait, did she say, 'Chinook'? Is she even talking to me? If not who is she talking to? I begin looking around to see any other mutts in the room.

"Your name is Chinook, how do you like it?" She asks, she read me like an open book.

Am I really that obvious? I think, still not responding.

"My name's Doctor Winters, your personal scientist. And we've decided to name you, Chinook. Can you talk yet? Shake your head if no, and say yes if you can." She asks.

I tilt my head in confusion, my floppy ear flopping to the right.

She slightly chuckles, "You'll learn soon. Now it's time for your training." Then she says something under her breath, "They never give you guys a break."

They began walking down the halls before entering a large room with several other wolves in it.

Several curious faces stared at him, a few glared, and the rest simply ignored him. For every mutt there was a scientist, though there was a pair with a harness and leash marked with the word, Miracle all over it.

But I thought Miracle was the only one with that name, then I remember that Miracle was also a title, she just happened to earn the name. She was probably one of the first.

Suddenly the instructor came up front, before his voice boomed over the room, "Since we have found fifteen suitable recruits we will begin training today. Our first lesson of the day is, merely tracking, and deciphering different dens."

The room suddenly changed and several dens appeared, they were very convincing, but I stuck my nose into it and it slightly flickered.

"Dr. Winters, control your mutt." The instructor ordered.

"Yes sir." She replied before gently tugging on my leash.

At first I didn't comply before remembering Miracles words, "...you'll get in trouble, and you don't want that." Those words rung out in my head and then I turned around before sitting next to Dr. Winters.

"Now, you must be familiar with the scent of the three main cainids of Lost River. Spring is coming and pups are bound to be born due to last months wolf reintroduction. You must fine these dens and pull out fifty percent of the pups, if the litter is an odd number, leave the extra pup, it doesn't matter. All three canids will use dens formally used by other cainids, therefore you will need to know which is which. These simulated dens and scents will help familiarize you with everything. Any questions?" The instructor explained.

"Why only canids? Why not anything else?" One scientist spoke up.

"Because we are confident with our knowledge, once we have mastered this field we will move on to beavers possibly." He explained, "Anyone else?"

"What about the moose then?" The same scientist spoke up. It was quite obvious he was new.

"She was an accident. She broke in and we decided to experiment with her ligaments, that's why she flops around like that. Any other questions?"

No one spoke up.

"Then begin!" He barked.

Each of us sniffed different scents before holographic pictures appeared above each scent before they were switched around, and we were forced to match the picture with the scent by dragging the pictures across the screen over the viles.

Then they showed us different types of dens and which ones had the likelihood of containing which canids.

"Class, dismissed!"

The scientists with mutts began dispersing, Dr. Winters led me down into another room where there were vets waiting. She shut the door behind us and unleashed me.

I didn't try to run, what was the point? The door was shut, and I would be punished anyways.

"Can he speak yet?"

What is everyone talking about? Of course I can't speak, not like them. It's already painful enough to try to speak in my native language. What are they expecting out of me? I think, as I glare at them. They smelled exactly like the bandages and cone I was concealed in.

"Not yet, but he'll learn soon enough." Dr. Winters replies.

I sit down in the white hospital bed and look at the protection of several pictures CAT Scans, of my... neck and head.

"We're going to have to run another CAT Scan of him again tomorrow to see if the body is accepting his new larynx." One vet said, observing me.

New larynx? I think.

"We'll try to get him to speak in a few weeks."

"I'm assuming no food or water tonight?" Dr. Winters says.

"Indeed. Dismissed." The vet says.

Dr. Winters re-leashes me and opens the door before we leave.

"You did a good job today, I'm sorry I can't feed you today." She says as she unleashes me and ushers me into my kennel.

I enter and she closes the door before walking away.

I watch as she is about to exit but kneels down, scratching none other than Miracle behind the ear.

"Good girl." Dr. Winters cooes before standing up and exiting.

Miracle watches the scientist walk away before she approaches my cage, "How was your day?" She asks, sitting down.

"My throat hurts." I say, hoarsely.

"Yeah, I've heard that a lot lately." She replies.

"Can you talk to humans?" I ask, hoarsely.

"Can't you?" She asks.

I shake my head.

"Wow. I thought that was something everyone could do. I've been able to do it for as long as I can remember." She looked down, placing a paw on her chin as she seemed lost in thought, "Huh, that is strange. I guess it comes with being a mutt. But then their's Floppy, she can't talk, like at all. I only hear coughing and gagging coming from her."

I begin to cough a little, then it turns into a coughing fit, and then I begin to gag, but nothing comes out. It slowly dies down as I catch my breath again.

"Are you okay?" She asks, genuinely concerned.

I swallow, but with difficulty before nodding.

"Are you sure? I can get a vet to come check on you." She offers.

I shake my head.

"Okay, if you say so." She says hesitantly. It was obvious she was skeptical over my rejection.

"Miracle, come for dinner!" Ashley called.

"Oop, I have to go, have a good night!" Miracle smiles before bounding off.

"Night." I say, weakly, as I slowly close my heavy eyes, immediately dozing off.
Day 7: Talking Lessons
It had been days since my larynx had been replaced. Miracle and I had become closer friends... JUST FRIENDS! Nothing more. But now I was headed to meet one of her friends before I started my talking lessons, the one named, Perseverance.

Once we reached her kennel Miracle introduced us.

Not only was her personality... interesting (the first thing she did was flirt... a lot) but she physically looked interesting. Although she wasn't like the Miracle elegance kind of thing she was more of a bit... wonk.

She looked like those munchkin cats, but in dog form. Obnoxiously short legs, a stub for a tail, floppy ears, blue eyes, mostly light grey coat with a few yellowish splotches here and there with the bonus of having a few black spots.

The moment her cage creaked open, she was nose-deep in my fur—no invitation, no hesitation.

I sat down, attempting to give her a message, but she just kept going.

"Now that you two have met it's time for you to meet Floppy! Beware, she's very quiet." Miracle said, as she bounded down the halls, we followed her.

Perseverance literally stood next to me the entire time, "Soooooo, what's your name again?"

"Chinook." I replied, my voice hoarse.

"Ooooo oo!" She cooed.

I raised a confused brow.

"Nevermind," she looked down, blushing.

"You sick or something?" I ask, gruffly.

"What, no, Imma just join Miracle, bye!" She barked before jogging up to her friend.

"Odd." I mumble under my breath before we made it to what seemed to be an outdoor pen, but the grass was real, so why did everything else feel... fake.

Suddenly they heard gagging and coughing nearby, almost like a cat coughing up a hairball, but worse.

"That's how you can find Floppy, come on, follow me!" Miracle barked as we followed.

We quickly ran up to a moose, and the name was self explanatory, this moose was floppy, very floppy.

"Hi Floppy, how has your day been?" Miracle asked, her tail wagging.

Floppy grunted weakly.

"Good, glad to hear that. This is Chinook, our newest member, Chinook, this is Floppy." Miracle explained.

Me and the obscure moose gazed into each other's eyes. I could see the pain in her eyes, that's when I noticed this collar thing, but underneath it showed a much darker story. A wound in her neck stitched in. I felt sympathy for her. Does Miracle know about this? It was clear Miracle's visits where the only thing that kept the poor creature sane.

Suddenly Floppy ripped away her gaze and flopped away.

"Oop, well, we should head back. Dr. Winter's is probably waiting for you." Miracle says as we began heading "inside."

Those eyes, they haunted me as I was ushered to another room.

It had the alphabet on the wall, books, and several other human objects for... young children.

"Alright, today you're learning how to speak, but you can't speak until you know basic words."

What felt like hours passed as the lesson pressed on, but only two things in his mind remained: Carmella and those haunting eyes.

"Alright, lets head back." Winters said, harnessing me as leading me down the halls.

As we headed back Miracle joined me, "So, how was your first lesson?"

"Good," I reply, hoarsely, but it had defiantly gotten better.

"That's nice. I've heard we can meet the werewolves now, wanna come down and meet them tomorrow with Perseverance and I?" She offered.

"What are, 'werewolves'? And no, I need a more specific answer than, 'they're half wolf, half human hybrids.'" I ask before emphasizing my question.

Both of them shrug.

"They better be pretty though, I'm not going anywhere near them if they're ugly." Perseverance says, raising her chin and tail, along with puffing up her chest to look... a little more... graceful?

Is that the right word for this occasion? It's an option... I'm not going down that rabbit hole.

Then she stumbles forward and smashes her face against a wall.

Miracle rushed over to her, "Percy?"

That was the nickname we used for her.

"Are you okay?" Miracle continued.

"Off me, I'm fine." She said, shoving her off.

"Oh, yeah, you're defiantly fine, it's not like you have a bloody nose or anything." I say, sarcastically.

Percy shrieks, "MY COAT! MY WONDERFUL COAT, WHYYYYY!" She wails, dramatically.

"Seriously, you're more worried about your fur, which for the record, has thousands of microscopic bits of grime and other things, than your nose?" I raise my brow.

Percy was a puddle of fur, tears, and blood—her dignity bleeding out faster than her nose.

We help her to the vet and leave her there before I returned to my kennel and caught some Z's for the night.
Day 8: The Truth About Werewolves
The next day, after the lessons Miracle, Percy, and I head down to meet the werewolves.

Percy had taken the lead and lead us down the wrong way.

"Are you sure this is the right way?" Miracle said, looking around, her ears bent in uncertainty.

"Of course I am, I'm always right." Percy said, boldly.

I roll my eyes as I hung back, I look up and see, Lab, Do NOT Enter. Authorized Personnel Only.

We enter a vent next to the door and we saw an eerie glow from the other side.

Miracle pressed herself against me, "I don't like this." She whimpered.

We exit underneath a table, and stare out.

It was a hallway, only lit up by these large tanks full of this glowing, green substance, bubbling, containing... humans.

Surprisingly no one was in here, well outside of the tanks that is.

We step out and began exploring, Miracle sticking to my side as Percy hid underneath me.

Our ears perk as we hear a desperate gasp, and turn to see a girl with black hair and brown eyes open her eyes.

The only thing written on her face was fear, she began banging on the glass, desperate for escape, mouthing 'help me', but to no avail.

We didn't know how to open the containers, so what use were we?

She clutched her neck, as if she was being strangled, after a minute or two she opened her mouth, allowing bubbles to escape as she sunk to the bottom.

All three watched in horror as the scene unfolded, they watched as a victim of the lab had been taken.

Only leaving a lifeless corpse in a container.

Suddenly they heard a door slide open and they hid behind the container.

"They're almost ready to be released, just a few more minutes and---" The scientist began to explain as they stopped in front of the one where the girl drowned, "Dammit, another one."

Ashley glared at the plump male, "We can't afford to loose another one. If we take one more person the town may become more suspicious of us than they already are."

"We're trying, but the breathing serum doesn't always last as long as we intend it too---" The plump male started.

Ashley grabbed the collar of his cloak and glared at him with her cold, blue eyes, "Then make it work." She growled before dropping him.

He staggered as he attempted to keep his balance before nodding vigorously, "Y-yes, m-ma'am, wi-will d-do." He stammered.

"Good." She replied, more calmly, "Now, why do none of them look like wolves?"

He cleared his throat, regaining his composure, "We made it so that they only transform under a full moon, if a blood moon occurs their prowess increases. This way nobody will be suspicious of our activity."

She gave him an approving glace, "Well done, Dr. Dao." She says as they began walking out of the hall.

Once they heard the door shut behind them we peek out.

Once they were sure there wasn't anyone else here we walk out in front of the tank.

I place my paw on the glass, it felt cold to the touch. I look down and see her body laying there, she'd submitted to death already.

The way her face showed not a speck of hope, she'd given up. She knew her fate and she had accepted it.

"I wish we could've helped her." Miracle said, softly, and solemnly as she placed her paw on the glass.

I nod in agreement.

Though Percy hadn't said anything, we could see it in her eyes, that feeling of helplessness.

"How dare they?" I growl.

Both of them turned to me.

"Didn't you know about any of this?"

Perseverance shook her head.

"I knew they were making werewolves, but this... this wasn't what I imagined at all." Miracle admitted, fidgeting with her slender paws.

What are they doing to Carmella? He thought before saying, "What are they doing to dogs?"

"Which type." Miracle said.

"Just, dogs, not wolfdogs, nothing. Did you happen to see a white dog with orange splotches by chance?" He specified before asking his question.

Miracle thought for a long moment, "Yeah... I think I did."

He jumped up, "Where is she? What are they doing to her?"

She blushed at his impulsive move, his paws were touching her shoulders.

"Oh, sorry." He blushed in embarrassment, placing his paws down in front of him.

"I-it's fine." She stammered in reply before shaking her head, "Um... I don't really remember where they took her, but I'm pretty sure they're planning to sell her."

"What? Why?"

"I think it was... equipment.?" She said, questioning her own words.

"Dammit." I stomp my paw.

"Uh, guys, I think someone's coming, we should get going." Percy warned, all our ears perk as we hear muffled voices.

"To the vent." I say, bolting to the vent, once the other two make it I shove them in before me.

Right as the door opened I crawled in as we crawled out on the other side before rushing down the halls.

Once we made it to my kennel we said out goodnight and split ways.

I didn't sleep the entire night. ...I couldn't.
Day 9: The Hunter Becomes the Hunted
I was forced to learn how to speak quickly otherwise they'd shock me.

Once they thought I was ready they sent me and two other mutts out.

Their names were River, a large, intimidating, semi robotic Doberman Pincer, with a cyborg eye, and Bagel, a small, black, white, and brown Beagle Bloodhound hybrid, with a black spot around his eye that genuinely looks like he has a black eye. Bonus points for him having huge floppy ears, and I'm not kidding when I say that. They literally drag on the ground, it's the funniest thing.

River was our squad leader, and she... they? I assume River's a she, but she's part robot sooooo... Anyways, it was more of, "Disobey and die." Type leader.

Yes. It is perfection.

"Meet back here, midday." It began walking away before stopping in it's tracks, it's red pupils locking onto us, "Do not be late." She growls.

"Yes ma'am... sir..." I reply, a paw up to my forehead in a salute, slightly lowering it as I tried to figure out what it was.

Bagel nodded, "Captain." He whispers.

"Captain." I correct myself.

"Dismissed!"

We bolted away from it as fast as we would.

"Phew, she's terrifying." I say as Bagel lowered his nose and began searching.

"No s***, Sherlock." Bagel replied.

Suddenly I smelled the smell of wolves hit the roof of my mouth. He must've known too, due to him lifting his nose and looking around, attempting to pinpoint it's location.

"This way." I say, taking a sharp turn.

He follows close behind.

Once we reach the den we waited for the parents to go away.

"So, who's grabbing the pups first?" He asks me.

"I'll do it." I volunteer.

He raises a suspicious brow at me, "Are you sure? If you're not careful, the parents will maul you."

"I'll be fine." I insist.

He shrugs, "If you say so."

I creep forwards, making it seem like I'm about to go to the den before dashing off.

I run as fast as I can before a sudden, sneering pain coursed through my body, causing me to shake violently before throwing me several feet away. I was screaming the entire time.

I wasn't able to move for a couple of minutes.

Bagel came out of the bushes with a sack that had several squirming pups in it, "What were you thinking, idiot?" He growls as he helps me up.

"To escape this hell." I reply, weakly, as I slightly chuckle before coughing,

"Well don't do that again." He replies, rolling his eyes as we head back to the center of our sector.

I get up and began staggering forward, "So what was that?" I question, then I yelp right as I'm about to fall.

He catches me and replies, "That's the barrier of our sector. It keeps us separate from other mutts with sectors of our own. Hitting the barrier for the first time is dismissed by scientists, with a warning. If you continue to hit the barrier, then they may take more extreme measures to discipline you. The last one, they'll either 'fix' you, or simply kill you." He explains.

I raise a brow at the way he said, 'fix', "What do you mean by, 'fix you'?"

"You'll become semi-mechanic, like River." He replied.

"Wait, so you're telling me River was disobedient?"

"Tch, hell no. She's a miracle."

"Oh s***." I reply as we make it to the center.

"Yeah."

We sit down and wait for River to return.

She returns with two sacks, "I thought you mutts would get more pups."

"Sorry, it's his first time." Bagel lies... well it was partially true, but it wasn't the classic 'first time struggle' thing.

"This is the one time I'll dismiss this underwhelming catch. If this persists you will be eliminated." She growls.

"Got it, Captain." I reply. I was lucky my charcoal colored coat hid most of the singes from the shock.

A van pulls up. Once parked two scientists step out and open the back, followed by four very different sized kennels.

I assume the fourth is for the pups.

We give up our sacks to the scientists as they opened them and released them into the fourth kennel before quickly slamming the door shut. So that no rebels attempt to escape.

Followed by that, each of us enter our respective kennels before they shut the doors and drove off.
Day 10: The Werewolf Presentation
"All scientists to the presentation room now." A voice over the PA rang out through the building.

Dr. Winters looked up before quickly whisking away, forgetting to lock my cage.

I smile before quietly stepping out and looking around for Bagel, Miracle, and Perseverance.

Bagel was in the next room to mine along with Perseverance.

We pad down through the halls, following Percy down the halls, who lead us to Miracles room. A ROOM!

I'm not saying as in a cage in a room, but an entire room to herself! No fair.

When I opened the door there she was, reluctantly eating rats.

She looked up, "What are you guys doing here, oh hey Bagel."

"How do you do?" Bagel replied.

"Good, good."

"You know each other?" I ask, confusion written on my face.

"I know basically everyone here." Miracle replies.

"Huh." I reply, thoughtfully.

"But seriously, what are you guys doing here?" Miracle asks.

"We came to get you out so we can watch the presentation." I reply.

"Oh. Okay."

We had been crawling through the vents leading to the room for quite some time.

"Are you sure this is the right way?" I ask Percy.

"Of course it is!" She barks before continuing.

"Are you sure this is a good idea?" Miracle asks.

I shrug before responding with, "Either way we need to know what this is about."

"It must be important if your scientist forgot to lock your door in such a hurry." Bagel replies.

"Do we really need to know though? I mean we can survive without knowing about this." Miracle replied.

"But don't you wanna know what all the fuss is about?" I pressed.

"Of course not. She doesn't want to dirty up her little perfect record." Bagel snapped.

Miracle was about to speak before Percy interrupted.

"We're here." She called.

The thin vents expanded into a box were they stared through a bared window in the vents.

Ashley walked on stage, there was a large box with a curtain over it.

"Scientists of the BCE facility, welcome to the Werewolf Presentation." Ashley spoke finally, "We have achieved something no other laboratory has ever achieved in the history of science. Yes, we have created advanced technology, yes, we've made hybrids before, but no other facility has achieved this." Ashley gestured towards the box.

The curtain was ripped off, revealing a a human who seemed to be half wolf.

It stood on the stage with chains around its arms and a muzzle around its snout.

The creature was masculine, it had grey fur, yellow eyes, and seemed to be at least six feet tall. It's yellow gaze stared at the ground, its ears folded in uncertainty, along with it's tail tucked.

"We have spent months attempting to create the perfect assassin. One that will kill those who oppose us and our work. We all know the goal of this facility, to 'remake the world... one molecule at a time.' We have achieved this and we will continue our work. Nothing can stop us now." Ashley finished, a cruel smile stretched across her face as the scientists began cheering.

She waited for the crowd to quiet down, "Now, we must list out our targets, starting with, Dr. Winters."

Many scientists stepped aside as Dr. Winters's eyes widened in horror as another scientist opened the cage and used a lazer to point at her.

The werewolf's pupils became slits as it locked onto its target.

"Goodbye, Pepper Winters. I was hoping you would serve us for longer." Ashley smiled before giving the command.

The lazer turned green.

The werewolf howled before charging at the doctor, it's pupils seemingly disappeared.

Winters shrieked, opening the door and attempting to run before it was silenced.

The werewolf stepped aside, revealing a shredded body. It's maw dripping with human blood.

I stood there, fear rippling through my scent as my hackles raised.

It looked up, sniffing the air before locking its gaze onto the vent.

Ashley followed the creatures gaze before noticing us in the vent too.

"We need to go, NOW!" I barked.

Bagel stared at it for a moment before he nodded in agreement, but Miracle and Percy were just frozen in fear.

I grabbed Miracles scruff while Bagel grabbed Percy's scruff and we began running down the vents.

Crash!

I took one peek and saw that the werewolf was tearing through the vents to get to us.

"Faster!" I barked as we ran. My heart thumped in my chest violently.

We jumped out the vent, I was blinded by light.

"How the hell did we get outside?" Bagel questioned, dropping Percy.

"I don't know, I don't care, we need to get out of here." I barked, beginning to dig under the fence.

I made it to the other side before grabbing Miracle's scruff again and dragging her through.

Bagel followed with Percy.

Miracle shook her head once we made it to the other side.

"Go! Go! Go!" I bark, shoving her up as we continued to run.

A ruckus had begun in the streets before a bone-chilling howl silenced them all.
Day 10 (Count): The Chase
I look over my shoulder.

My gaze met with the glowing yellow eyes of the beast.

It leapt from its perch ontop of the rooftop.

"Maybe we could loose it in the alleyways." I suggest, shoving Miracle into an alley.

The other two got the message and leapt in before I followed.

The werewolf stuck its snout into the alleyway, but due to its broad frame, it was unable to follow them... directly because it proceeded to leap up onto the rooftops yet again and ran to the otherside of the alleyway.

They ran back and fourth, but it just kept blocking their path until a familiar (obnoxious) voice spoke, "Hey you! What're ya doin' on our turf?!"

"Great, these a**holes again," I grumbled under my breath.

The creature peeled his lip back, softly snarling as it narrowed its yellow gaze at the dogs, which I assumed were on the right of it, aka my left.

"Now get off my turf before we mess you up," the chihuahua's voice warned.

The snarls only intensified.

"I said, get off my tur---" He was interrupted by a blood curdling scream.

Blood spattered across the asphalt as whimpers echoed through the neighborhood.

My heart pounded against my rib-cage, I genuinely thought it was going to burst out.

"Follow me," I whispered as I turned around and bolted out, followed by the others.

We exited the alley and headed towards the forest.

We ran for what felt like hours, my entire body was sore, but I just kept running like an automaton. All of us did.

I noticed a crevice under a road and dove under.

The other three followed.

All of us huddled close together many thoughts rushed through my mind as the monster approached our hiding spot.

Is this it? Are we gonna die right here and right now? Will I ever tell Carmel---

BANG!

It howled in pain as it toppled over, curling in on itself as it gripped its shoulder.

BANG!

It couldn't keep its head upright as it convulsed violently. Blood gushed from its head.

Two humans approached the beast, warily eyeing it as they circled.

One of the hunters picked up a stick and poked the werewolf with it. "What the hell?"

"What is it?" The other asked.

"I don't kn---" he yelped when the werewolf snapped at him. In response he shot it again. This time in the eye.

This seemed to do the trick since its movements halted entirely.

"What should we do with it?"

"Skin it?"

Another hunter interjected, "No."

The other two flinched before turning around.

"Put it up for display in the lodge. Perhaps we can use this as evidence." He had black hair, a mustache, and brown eyes.

"Evidence?" The first raised a brow.

"Haven't you heard of the news?"

"BCE?" The second guessed.

The third nodded, "They're up to something and I believe they have something to do with this." He gestured towards the werewolf.

"So, what should we do then?" The first asked.

"I may or may not know someone," the third replied. "Pack it up, we're heading to JJ's cabin."

The other two nodded before all of them began dragging the werewolf onto their truck, driving off once the cargo was secure.

"We need to follow them," Miracle whispered.

"Are you crazy?! They have the thing that just tried to kill us!" I whisper-shouted. "And the hunters would kill us if they saw us."

"Chinook has a point, that's a risky move," Bagel aggreed.

"Mhm, Chinook's right," Percy nodded, rubbing into my side.

I felt uncomfortable, so I moved aside, causing her to topple over.

She huffed before brushing her self off and sitting back down.

"John isn't evil! He's just doing what he's been told." Miracle protested.

"Who are you--- are you talking about that werewolf?" I asked.

"The werewolf has a name?!?" Bagel raised a brow.

"Yes, all of them do. None of them were bad people as far as I could tell," Miracle continued.

"As far as you could tell? Making assumptions like that is dangerous, Miracle, not everyone shows their true colors until it's too late for you!" I interrupted, growling quietly.

"At least I give people a chance, I mean, not everyone is a bad person either!"

"Why are you so naive?!" I retorted, my gaze narrowing.

The taller female opened her mouth before closing it.

"That's what I thought. Lets go," I barked before crawling out and padding away.

"Geez, what's his problem?" Percy mumbled.

My ear flicked backwards, but I was too exhausted to do anything to counter the statement.
Day 11: Mistrust
I ate from the food bowl, next to my older sister, Starling.

She was a large wolfdog with a light black coat, amber eyes, and a snaggle tooth. Despite her large and intimidating appearance, she was his older sister.

"So, how'd you sleep?" Starling asked, chewing the dry, flavorless kibble.

I shrugged, continuing to nibble on my food, "Wasn't bad," I lied.

Starling narrowed her eyes, "You seem tense. Did you have a nightmare?"

I averted my gaze, trying not to look into her piercing amber eyes.

"Chinook," Starling said, firmly.

"Okay fine! I did!" I admitted, albeit reluctantly.

"What was it about?" She pressed.

I sat, staring down at the wooden floor, "That we were separated."

She nudged him, "That isn't the case here, now is it?"

"But what if we do?" I asked.

"We won't, I'll make sure of it," she declared fiercely. "If they try it, I'll bite off their heads."

"Yeah, you're right. It's just a dumb dream," I said, wagging my tail defiantly.

"That's the spirit!" Starling also wagged her tail and nudged my shoulder.

Nothing out of the ordinary happened that day... not until night fell.

Our owners placed a muzzle on Starlings snout and tried dragging her away.

"Chinook!" She called, as she was pulled back.

"Starling!" I call, trying to reach her, but I was held back. "No!"

My eyes snapped open, my head went up, ears pinned to my skull, and I pant heavily as my eyes dart around the room.

"Shhh, shhh, you're okay, you're safe now," a soothing voice said.

I look up to see some woman with a gentle smile staring down at me.

She reaches out but I back away, growling softly.

She retracted her hand in response.

This wasn't the spot we chose to sleep in last night.

"Who are you?" I growl, trying to stand up, but my legs buckled and I wince. What is wrong with me? I think in frustration.

"Oh, geez, they've already replaced your larynx," she said before looking up at the man leaning against the doorway.

He had his arms crossed.

I realize this was the same guy who helped kill the werewolf.

It lined up, the black hair, the mustache, and the brown eyes.

I growl softly, unsure whether or not he was planning on finishing me too.

"I recommend you give 'em some space," he says, warily eyeing me.

Miracle groaned before yawning, "Wha-what happened?"

"Nooooo! My beautiful coat is ruined!" Perseverance cried, looking at her dirty paws.

"Just five more minutes?" Bagel mumbled, groggily.

"Answer my question," I growl, firmly.

The man smirked, "We don't tell dogs our info."

"Dude," the woman said, sternly. She looked to be at least a young adult. "I'm Jessie Jones, this is my brother, John Jones," she gestured back to the man.

"Where are we?"

"You're at my cabin," the woman now revealed to be Jessie replied.

"And how did we get here?"

"You did a horrible job at hiding," John replied, bluntly.

"Shut up. Anyways, Olivier---one of John's friends---noticed that you guys were in an alleyway and had strange collars around your necks, and not like the normal tracking collars they put on the wolves that were brought here a couple of months ago," Jessie explained, lifting up Chinook's shock collar.

"Still think it's stupid they brought wolves back, and especially not allow hunters to hunt 'em," John grumbled.

"We don't have time for politics right now, John," Jessie warned, sternly, with a hint of sass in her voice.

John rolled his eyes.

I simply glared at them throughout the entire interaction.

"But now we have evidence of the BBC's crimes, real, tangible evidence," Jessie replied, placing the collar onto the table.

"Two bits of tangible evidence, one of which I helped get."

"Yes, yes, I know, you don't need to brag about it," Jessie rolls her eyes.

I look up slightly and see a board covered in pictures, drawings, notes, strings, and pins.

"Well, you don't seem to appreciate me enough. I mean, I give you free and fresh game every month."

"I know, and I appreciate your efforts, but now is not the time---"

"What the hell is that?" I interrupt, gesturing to the board.

"Woah," the other three gasp.

Jessie grins, knocking on it, "It's my evidence board," she replies, pride evident in her straightened posture and smile.

"Conspiracy board," John corrected.

"Tomato tamato, same thing," Jessie dismissed his comment.

"Wow, this is a lot of information. How'd you get this?" Miracle inquired, sitting up.

Bagel scratched his neck. "Feels good to finally itch this spot," he sighs in relief.

"My coat..." Perseverance whimpered.

My eyes lock onto a picture of the chicken man. "Carmella," I whisper under my breath. "Where's that man? Where's Carmella?" I demand, finally having the strength to get up without falling over.

"Woah, woah. Back off," John ordered, getting between me and Jessie.

"Answer my question, what're the whereabouts of Carmella?"

Jessie stands up, and gently brushes John to the side. "You knew Carmella?"

"Yes. Where is she?"

"She's been gone for a week. Mr. Green is absolutely loosing it, but at least he's got Maggie still," Jessie explained, calmly. "However, I did see this guy," she gestured to the picture of the chicken man holding money in his hand in front of Carmella, "With Carmella. When I reported it, the police searched his house and found nothing. I must've been too late."

I groan in frustration, "Dammit."

"Why do you want to know anyways?" Jessie asks.

"She was a---" I pause, "A friend."

Jessie's eyes lit up, "Do you know of her last whereabouts?"

I glare at her, trying to decipher malicious intent, but I saw none. So I reluctantly explain how chicken man traded Carmella with Ashley, but instead of getting what he wanted, Ashley used two guards to knocked him out. Then they took Carmella, they spotted me running at them and also took me. "I haven't seen her since."

Geez, this is like the 5th time I've had to apologize for this (I rlly need to lock in lol), but I'm sorry for not updating for a while... again. I will try my best, but once again, writers block has been running rampant for this story, my synapses are not firing for the correct books (I swear I'm working on like 5 other books), and I feel rlly bad considering this is my most popular book. I will try my best to keep going, if you guys have any ideas or LR lore things I haven't covered so far, then please go ahead and comment them down here, and I will try to incorporate those ideas into the book bc, Imma be honest here, I got nothing. My brain is genuinely not braining and I don't wanna use AI bc we all know what happens when AI gets involved.
