Taming Guide: The Mounts & Animals

I've killed more mounts then I could count to fall damage. Here's how to catch each one your looking for

Introduction

Simple Guide to Mount & Animals since I see it's a common topic in the SoulMask Discord. The guide is broken up into each mount animal then the rest of the tames. Quick facts before we deep dive:

• All animals have rarities ranging from lowest to highest: White, Green, Blue, Purple, Yellow, Orange/Red.
  
• The rarity of an animal determines both its size and its stats. Higher rarity means a larger mount with better stats.
  
• Saddles also have rarities, and the rarity of the saddle will further improve the stats of the animal it is equipped on.

Alpaca Guide

Alpacas are the first early game mount you should come across, these guys are very easy to tame and take no time to catch.

What They Eat

Thatch, Potato, Quinoa, Pumpkin, Corn, Banana, Pineapple, Peanut, Alpaca Feed, Refined Alpaca Feed

How to Catch

Honestly the easiest to catch you can find them at ancient ruins, and barbarian barracks. Since they're already caged up you simply need to pick them up and set them down on the ground from there whistle them and walk back to base.

Jaguar Guide

Jaguars are another early game mount you should come across, these guys can be difficult to catch and require a lot of patience since there is a capture event mini-game associated with the cubs.

The Mini Game Can Fail

If the mother jaguar aggros you and you kill it before a cub spawns you will need to start over, once the cub is spawned you can kill the mother.

What They Eat

Fresh Meat, Fish, Premium Fish, Meat, Rare Fresh Meat

How to Catch

Whats Needed:

• 1-2 medium traps crafted
  
• any meat (1 is only needed per trap)

Early Game Locations

Basically anywhere you find jaguars, this spot is just very consistent

Capture Event Mini Game

Scan the game environment for Jaguar tracks.


Follow the tracks to initiate the capture event. Continuously scan and interact with each new set of tracks.


Eventually, you'll observe an adult female jaguar hunting wild animals. Remain hidden and observe as the jaguar catches its prey.


Listen for the jaguar to announce it's returning home to feed the cub. Follow the jaguar slowly, staying crouched to avoid aggro.


When the jaguar reaches its den, it will spawn a cub and the female will display "resting" text. This is your opportunity to eliminate the female jaguar.


Place traps strategically and load them with food.


Be patient and wait for the cautious jaguar cub to approach the traps. Use Q (or the appropriate command) repeatedly to monitor and ensure they walk into the trap successfully.


Finally pick up your Jaguar and check it's stats. Note: for black jaguars they need to be Orange Quality

Ostrich Guide

Ostrich are found in the desert. I strongly recommend you bring items to deal with radiation and some weapons to kill the ostriches near the nest they will become hostile as you get closer.

What They Eat

Wild Fruit, Quinoa, Pumpkin, Corn, Banana, Pineapple, Peanut, Ostrich Feed, Refined Ostrich Feed

How to Catch

The easiest area to find eggs is just north of the portal for the desert.


Q scans can help find them faster


Simply slay any ostrich you find.


Pick up an egg and walk it back to base.


Hatching is very fickle on temperature; you can use a bonfire, but you may have some trouble with setting it in the right spot for temperature


Using an air heater (learned with Temperature Rise Technology, tier 2 of the Iron Pit Bonfire). Just set the Gear setting to 3 and wait for the hatching.

Llama Guide

Currently under editing and working on screen shots

llamas similar to the Alpaca these guys are very easy to tame and take no time to catch. They're able to carry way larger weight limits (800 vs 350) are great for resource collecting. They can also carry unconscious barbarians or small livestock.

What They Eat

Quinoa, Pumpkin, Corn, Banana, Pineapple, Peanut, Llama Feed, Refined Llama Feed

How to Catch

Whats Needed:

• 1-2 medium traps crafted
  
• any item they eat (1 is only needed per trap)

Where to Find

Snow Leopard Guide

Currently under editing and working on screen shots

Snow Leopards are endgame mounts and are found in the northwestern snow region of the map, similar to the Jaguar these guys can be difficult to catch and require a lot of patience since there is a capture event mini-game associated with the cubs.

The Mini Game Can Fail

If the mother leopard aggros you and you kill it before a cub spawns you will need to start over, once the cub is spawned you can kill the mother. The mini game is exactly the same as Jaguars so I'll post the quickest location to look for one from the portal below.

What They Eat

Fresh Meat, Fish, Premium Fish, Meat, Rare Fresh Meat

How to Catch

Whats Needed:

Jaguar : its the speed mount by excellence, but it have only that advantage, around same carry weight than alpaca

Lama : the BEST mount when you need to carry things, can go beyond 1000 carry weight, have double(triple?) page of item slots (can carry more differents items), and thanks to extension of saddles, can either carry one unconscious barbarian to be recruited later or carry up to 4 small animals (caught by small traps), can't have both extension though, slow movespeed (still better than on foot don't worry)

Ostrich : Fast mount, less than jaguar, have -95% fall damage, so you can drop from mountain and still live, have insane radiation resist and natural self radiation removal (must have when going to desert), great heat resist, decent cold resist, carry weight around alpaca/boar

As to what benefit you get from each mounts :

Alpaca : basic mount, easiest mount to get as shown in this guide

Boar : slightly harder as you have to use traps against babies, but boars have present in almost every biomes, so not hard to find

he can eat almost anything, have great resist against every environment hazard (poison/heat/radiation/cold) probably the go to when going to volcano or poisoned areas, less than specialized mounts though, slightly more carry weight than alpaca, around same speed, more health (more stamina?)

About the ostrich hatching, putting the egg between two firecamps also works, the hatching of the poor

Another hint when hunting snow leopard (and probably jaguar). Don't ride a mount while following the footprint. You could scan 200 and none will spawn.
