USS Johnston (DD-557) - 1944 - Fletcher-class destroyer

Kuvaus
USS Johnston (DD-557) was a Fletcher-class destroyer of the U.S. Navy built by the Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Corporation of Washington during the Second World War. She was laid down in May of 1942, launched in March of 1943, and commissioned into service on 27 October 1943, CDR Ernest E. Evans in command. Her commissioning was only two days short of one year prior to her loss. As the 73rd of 175 total Fletchers to be built for the Navy, she was built with the redesigned lower, square bridge that replaced the earlier tall, round bridge design of the early Fletchers. Johnston participated in numerous operations in the Pacific Theatre during 1944 before earning fame for her heroic actions during the Battle off Samar on 25 October, where she was sunk in a fierce surface action against an overwhelming Japanese fleet.

This model reflects Johnston as she appeared in October 1944 just prior to the battle, and is representative of most square bridge Fletchers during the mid to late war.

She has the following armament:
-5x 5"/38 guns in Mk 30 single mounts
-10x 21" torpedo tubes in Mk 14 & Mk 15 quintuple mounts
-10x 40mm Bofors in Mk 1 twin mounts
-7x 20mm Oerlikons in Mk 4 single mounts
-6x Mk 6 Depth charge projectors
-2x Mk 9 Depth charge stern racks

Credit and thanks to Zamarick for allowing me to use his depth charge projectors from his USS Cushing.
