We often see questions like this in chat : " - I'm new to this game, it seems very hard, how can i learn to play ? "
Then, *facepalm* when we see answers like : " - play MP games, join my game, naow ! "
Wrong !

If you are new to Wargame franchise, then its a good way to get steam-rolled by experienced players, and to be quickly disgusted from Wargame..
..Which is very sad (because this game is awesome!).
In fact, MP games will be the best way to IMPROVE your skills, but not to learn from scratch!



You have to learn how to handle units first
Because when you're not used yet to Wargame, MP games are fast way to not learn anything except that the game is hard..
This is why this guide will help you to make your very firsts steps in Wargame.
We will use Solo > Skirmish for that purpose.. (works also in coop, but those decks are not meant for PvP)
The objective is to train you a bit before you jump into the PvP jungle.

At the end of this guide, you will be able to enjoy multiplayer games, instead of just beeing cannon fodder..

PS : I will NOT cover all nations, this is not the goal here, because there is like 20 nations in the game.
At first, we'll use the most common materials and units, and go step by step from training-only decks (step 1 to 3) to more serious decks compositions (step 4).

  • Wargame Learning Program (ingame lessons by community, for the community!), is accessible on top of the general ingame chat.
  • Youtube will also be a very nice source of video to learn how people play to this game, so you will have a better idea of how to counter them in PvP.
  • Some steam guides and Youtube videos cover well specific Nations in Wargame, have a look on them if you are interrested by one nation in particular.

Note : At first, ingame chat appears to be full of spammers/trolls, but in fact, they only represent 1% of players, but they are extremly noisy. That is why mute a couple of spammers is so effective.
The best answer to spammers/trolls, is to not feed the troll, and use the MUTE button (red button in bottom right corner). How to: Clic on a troll's name, clic the red button, then clic again in 'Wargame' to come back to general chat. Once the most noisy trolls/spammers are muted, chat will be way more friendly ;)

Step #1 : This side toward enemy !
This very first step is for players who start from scratch.



you can skip to Step #2 if you already played a few games, or if you saw a friend playing, or if you watched some youtube gameplay videos for example.. or if you think you're stronk.

AI Difficulty :
Normal, Hard
I strongly recommend 'Hard' as AI already have a consequent penalty due to it's inferior tanks.

Goals of this step :
  • Deploy Command units to capture sectors and gain more points to bring more backup.
  • Learn to use Main Battle Tanks (MBT) with M1A1 Abrams.
  • Learn to protect your troops from enemy attack helicopters, with Anti-Air units
  • Use recon units to improve firing range of your MBT and AA.
  • Call CAS with AH-1E Cobra attack helicopters, they look badass, and they will save your day if you are overhelmed!
  • Learn to re-supply your troops (ammunitions for infantry, spare parts to repair tanks) with HEMTT high capacity supply trucks.
  • Setup defensive positions and/or deadly ambushes with Infantry sections.



Units & Tips:
  • M1A1 Abrams dominates open fields, but will be vulnerable to attack helicopters. Dont let emeny tanks / infantry get close on your tanks, or you will loose em.
  • Riflemen '90 sections can protect tank's flanks, or can setup deadly ambushes in cities. Humvee allow them to deploy quickly everywhere, but they will be vulnerable while in transport due to the lack of armour.
  • Light Riflemen '90 in UH-60A Blackhawk will give you higher mobility, and they will be able to deal with most armoured menaces at long range with their Anti-Tank Guided Missile (ATGM).
  • Use Recon units to gain a consequent advantage, your tanks will shot farther, so does your AA units if a recon gives em better sight. As soon as you will loose recon units in an area, you will be blind to enemy's attacks and you can be quickly overhelmed.
  • A couple of enemy Mi-24P (Hind) will try to destroy your defense, but you can counter them with LAAD Stinger C, M48A3 Chaparral, M163 PIVADS.
  • Learn to place / move your Anti-Air units so they will protect other units properly.

AI Difficulty :
Normal, Hard
Your choice here, i recommend 'Hard' (Ai act stupidly until 'Hard' setting), but if you are new to Wargame franchise, then select 'Normal' on your first tries.

Goals of this step :
  • Learn to recon deeper to avoid bad surprises.
  • Learn when to use tanks and to preserve them.
  • And when/where to use Infantry sections for maximum efficiency.
  • Learn to protect your troops with AA
  • Learn to call Airstrike to save your day, or to hit hard enemy while he's not prepared for.
  • Learn to use SEAD aircrafts to snipe Radar AA



New Units & Tips :
  • Elite M1A1 Abrams (vet 4) still dominates open fields, but will be vulnerable to airstrikes and to ATGM (anti-tank groung-to-ground missiles). Enemy tanks / infantry will also try to overhelm your tanks, so watch em carefully, and retreat with 'G' key + left clic if needed.
  • Riflemen '90 sections in M113A3 can protect tank's flanks, and can setup deadly ambushes in cities. They can do it in forest also, but with very limited protection, so best is to place em in buildings.
  • Use Recon units to gain a consequent advantage, you will be able to see enemy coming and react consequently. As soon as you will loose recon in an area, you will be blind to enemy's attacks and you can be quickly overhelmed.
  • You will meet some basic flying threats, But you have everything in you deck to kill em (LAAD Stinger C, M727 I-Hawk PIP III, M48A3 Chaparral, M163 PIVADS).
  • Learn to place / move your Anti-Air units so they will protect other units properly.

Ice on the cake: You have acces to Aircrafts in this step, but don't be cocky, enemy also have AA!

  • call CAS with AV-8B Harrier II to snipe any armoured units. Can also deal with helicopters.
  • call F-15C Eagles to rule the sky
  • call EF-111A Raven (SEAD) to blind-shoot Radar AA. This last one is only dedicated to destroy enemy Radar AA, and will need protection if enemy send aircrafts against it.. Thats why you have Eagles !

Don't hesitate to replay this skirmish tutorial with other map / higher AI difficulty, untill you are satisfied with your Kill/Loss ratio.

You need to master this step to survive next step.

Note: A lot of other maps can fit, but AI tend to suicide units much more easily on some bridges-based maps, so keep that in mind for those tutorials)

- Game Mode : Destruction / Conquest (try Destruction to learn units, but I strongly recommend CONQUEST for that step)
- Starting points : from 1500 to 2000 pts
- Victory (for Destruction): from 3000 pts to 'Total Destruction'
- Victory for Conquest : 1000 Pts
- 30 min for Destruction, at least 40 min for conquest)
- Income Rate : 'Normal' is fine. but you are free to change it.

AI Difficulty :
Normal, Hard
I strongly recommend 'Hard'.

Goals of this step :
  • Learn to take a solid push with limited casualties, use all your forces (Combined Arms)
  • then be able to counter-attack while enemy is weak. This is very important in Conquest mode.
  • Select your Aircraft's paths carefully (recon as much as possible), to save your planes from deadly enemy AA
  • Learn to snipe enemy Radar AA with SEAD
  • Learn to save your AA from enemy SEAD planes (you can turn off your Radar AA by clicking on its weapon, or with 'H' hotkey when AA is selected, you can also hide radar AA behind a wall of non-radar AA).

New Units in this step :
  • M1IP Abrams will be help you to fill holes in your defense, or to cover flanks from enemy IFVs. But they wont last long against enemy best tanks.
  • M1A2 Abrams will be able to deal with high end enemy tanks. But it can be overhelmed if you let too many tanks get range on you.
  • Riflemen '90 in M2A2 Bradleys sections will be handy to deal with all light armoured or soft targets.
  • You should choose (and modify the deck accordingly) which M113 variant to give to your cheapest Infantry sections : M113A3, up-armoured variant, or M113A1, less armoured, but amphibious !
    The choice is yours, and you can adapt your forces to the amount of lakes/rivers existing in the map you are about to play.
  • Recon Rangers in CH-47 Chinook will provide you quick and sneaky recon to infiltrate enemy lines
  • LAAD Stinger C, M727 I-Hawk PIP III, M48A3 Chaparral, M163 PIVADS will allow you to deal with some serious flying threats, but your Aircrafts can help to bring em down more quickly.
  • M106A2 107mm Mortars can save your day. Use em to stun/destroy enemy or to create a smoke screen to cover your advance. Smoke screen is also helpful if your enemy has better range than you.



Aircrafts :
  • AH-1F Cobra will provide a solid punch against a wide variety of targets
  • A-10A Thunderbolt will BRUUUUUuuuuuuu any heavy armoured units, but will be vulnerable to AA and enemy fighters, so use em carefully
  • F/A-18C Hornet can snipe armoured units with a good chance to dodge enemy missiles (but not AA guns)
  • F-16C Block 52 to rule the sky, useful to get rid of enemy bombers.
  • EF-111A Raven (SEAD) to blind-shoot Radar AA.
Learn to choose carefully which Aircraft to call to save your unit's ars on the ground..
Step #4 : Death From Above !


In this step you will be able to play as EUROCORPS or USSR !

Hard AI recommended, but i would understand if you want to learn new units first, with medium ;)

Meet some of the most serious threats you will probably encounter in MP :
  • Various kind of Artillery, including cluster MLRS (multiple rocket launcher system) and Buratino (sort of Napalm MLRS).
  • You will have to survive to those, and you'll also have to Counter-battery or infiltrate enemy lines to make em pay.
  • Paradrop Assaults ! Take decisive positions early with helicopters and Paratroopers
  • Commando Troops ! Your elite training will pay off !
  • Deal with high-end Attack Helicopters and learn to use their power at max efficiency.
  • Deploy a nice variety of Main Battle Tanks.
  • Learn to escort them with autocanons IFV/CFV (Marder 2 and BMPT "Terminator" for ex) and AA systems.

Once you survived to that last training, you are ready to jump into Multiplayer slaughter !

Nice tutors! this is straight to the point, well i'm not saying i hate to read the 200+ pages of WRD guides, don't blame me, i've played CMO for a hundred hours and i still need to READ the basics/advance mechanic. Tbh i already have WRD for about a year but not really playing it because it's kinda overwhelm, but hey.... many thanks to the community and especially YOU! i like this simplified approach, with much simpler decks to start off. Have you considered doing a similar guide for Warno?
