The Dreyse Needle Rifle, or Zündnadelgewehr as called by Prussia,
was a Prussian single shot bolt-action rifle designed
by Johann Nikolaus von Dreyse, that was adopted by Prussia in 1841.
Though being adopted in 1841, Dreyse's design for this gun goes back to the late 1820s.

The gun I've made is a model of 1860.
Same mechanism as the original though.

How to Load and Fire:
Pull back Thumb Piece
Open bolt
Insert cartridge
Close bolt
Push in Thumb Piece

I recommend disabling hovering highlights, it lets you see the gun a lot better.
Open pause menu, go to Settings, and in 'General' there is 'Show hovering highlights'.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At the time of this guns adoption in 1841,
it was undisputedly the best infantry rifle in the world.
Most other armys either had smoothbore percussion guns, or flintlocks.
the Dreyse's effective range was about 200 yards,
and the smoothbores were about 100 yards.

However, the Dreyse didnt really see much use, as Prussia from 1841 to 1866
hadn't fought a major war.

By the early 1850's, a Frenchman called Claude Minié, had invented a rifle-musket
with a bullet that would expand to engage the rifling upon firing.
This new 'Minié Rifle' could be loaded as quickly as a smoothbore, and was very accurate.
In the Crimean War (1853-56), the British, armed with the Minié Rifle,
were firing effectively on the Russians at 600 yards.

Much later in 1866, the now 25 year old Dreyse saw its first major conflict
in the Austro-Prussian war.
This war, also known as the 7 weeks war, didn't last very long as the Prussians
managed to snatch a quick victory at Königgrätz
before the Austrians could fully prepare their armies.

It's very commonly said that the Prussians won simply because they had the Dreyse,
and Austria the Lorenz rifle-musket,
but Prussia's better logistics, training, organisation,
and Austria's insistence on assault tactics (bayonet charges) are the primary reasons

During the Austro-Prussian war, they were also fighting Bavaria.
Prussia, while successful in the end, faced a lot more difficulty and cost than expected
because Bavaria didn't adopt Austria's idea of assault tactics.
Instead they relied on keeping away from the enemy
and letting their accurate Podewils rifle-muskets to do the work.

Slightly later in the 1870 Franco-Prussian war,
France had a better needle rifle than Prussia. The Chassepot.
Unlike the Dreyse, which had a metal on metal gas seal which leaked gas,
the Chassepot used rubber obturation rings to achieve a proper gas seal,
giving it greater muzzle velocity, and more range...

France lost very quickly despite having the better gun.

In 1871 the Dreyse was replaced with the new Gewehr M1871,
a single shot bolt-action that doesn't require working the striker,
and it uses metallic cartridges.

the dreyse is still a pretty cool gun though

i can manage about 7 rounds in a minute in game with this
