While the drum magazine the PPSH can fit is recognizable for WW2 submachine guns like the for the Finnish Suomi and American Thompson, it did use the stick magazines and it included perks to it. It slightly decreased the weight of it compared to a 71 round drum magazine loaded and they were a bit more robust than drum magazines. it a drum were damaged then it is likely to jam as it will cause feeding problems. And as the war dragged on, stick magazines for the PPSH were more likely to be found and used. Downside to it was that due to its well known high rate of fire (save for COD's WW2 version which was slower), you could blow through the magazine rapidly in one burst. but controlled bursts helped a bit.
