[Review] The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

This is my review of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Since it is a Nintendo Switch game, I cannot make a traditional review for it on Steam, so I made it this way instead. If you have a Switch, or if you are able to / thinking about getting one, you should definitely buy this game. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is one of the best games I have ever played, and it is undoubtedly one of the best games ever created.

Introduction

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is the actual GOTY of 2023. It was the most anticipated game, obviously, as it is the sequel to one of the greatest games ever made. Baldurs Gate 3 is also a great game, but it is not on the same level as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

When this game came out, everyone agreed it was the best game. However, when Baldurs Gate 3 came out, all of a sudden The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was seen as "just a DLC for BOTW". This is ridiculous and obviously not the case as this game builds so much and expands on its predecessor. I do think there is a slight bias towards Nintendo when it comes to awards, there is just no way this game only won one award.

I do agree that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom did not have the same impact as BOTW did. No matter how great it is, it is difficult to achieve the same thing they did 6 years earlier. Still, it is actually the indisputable GOTY of 2023.

Genre

Just like its predecessor, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is an Open World, Action-Adventure Singleplayer story game. There is a massive open world, filled with enemies, loot, collictibles and secrets among many other things, for you to discover and explore. As you explore the world and progress through the story, you will encounter enemies and mini bosses, explore dungeons and find many secrets and references.

This will be further explained in the next part of this review.

Gameplay

The core gameplay is, of course, similar to that of BOTW, however, it has been changed quite a lot.

There are many, many new shrines to complete, and also side quests and storylines and so much more. The map has been expanded to include both sky islands and an entire underground world, so there are also many new activities to do.

The combat is great. Instead of the Sheikah Slate, you will be using a Purah Pad, which is basically just the same thing, but with new abilities and powers. These new powers are great, as they allow you to use materials you find to build vehicles, fuse together new weapons and ammo, ascend through structures and rewind time.

Your inventory can be expanded in the same way as in BOTW, and you can still tame horses, however, they are not as useful since you can make your own vehicles.

Graphics and Art Style

In my personal opinion, the graphics in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom are amazing. The art style is unique, and everything in the game looks great. There are villages, massive forests, mountain ranges, deserts and volcanoes, and huge open plains along with a large sea. There is also a very unique-looking underground world and beautiful sky islands. All of these look great, and the atmosphere within the game and in all of the different parts of the map is amazing. Character movement looks great both on Link and on NPCs.

Sound and Music

The sound and music within The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is not quite the same as in BOTW. There are still many moments where the music is very minimalistic and calm. However, since the atmosphere in this game is different compared to the atmosphere of BOTW, the music is sometimes more aggressive. Overall, the music is good.

Story and Lore

The story of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom takes place shortly after the events of its predecessor. The structure of the story is quite similar, with temples/dungeons to complete, memories to uncover and missions in between, and you can do this mostly the way you want. The story is pretty good, but just like in BOTW, it is not one of the strongest aspects of the game. The final battle is much better done than the one in BOTW though.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths
When it comes to strengths I do not have much to say, other than that this game is filled with them. Finding something negative about this game is a challenge. Everything from the art style, to the open world and the story is just great! I would say that basically everything in this game is a strength.

Weaknesses
Like I said, finding weaknesses for this game is hard, however, there are some. Firstly, while I like both the depths and the sky islands, I wish they would have only done one of them since they both feel a bit underwhelming. Secondly, because the gameplay has been upgraded and there are more things you can do, the controls/key bindings are not as convenient as they used to be in BOTW, but that is just how it is to play on console.

Numeric Score

This is one of the best games I have ever played, and it is one of the greatest games ever created. I love nearly everything about this game, and there is not much more to say other than that it is a masterpiece!

I definitely give this game 10/10.
