A Complete Guide to The Dragon Age Universe - Chronological Reading, Watching, and Game Guide
Por DemiseKey
To new players of the series, or those returning in preparation to Dragon Age: The Veilguard--are you hungry for more Dragon Age content? You will be happy to know there is a plethora of media in existence outside of the immediate game franchise!

This guide will break down the order to consume, as well as where to obtain the media at in an accessible way! I am sure there are other ways to either purchase or borrow the work, if you want to look into it! For instance, check to see if your library could get it, or local book stores in your area!

I will also often include collection books (i.e. a comic collection that has three separate comic series in one, or a bundle of five books) under each piece of media, just so you are able to get a deal on the books! You do not have to buy everything one by one!

I will be including the games and DLC in this guide, for continuity, if they do not take place within the base games!

I have also added information on lost media, such as flash games, mobile games, and text-based games that are no longer supported on the internet. There are videos that exist as archival information, and those are linked!

This is a ever going work in progress. Please bear with me!

Have fun!

Dragon Age: The Stolen Throne [Novel] / 8:96 Blessed • 9:00 Dragon

Written by David Gaider, this novel was written as a prequel to the first video game, Dragon Age: Origins. It is set thirty years before the events of the game, and provides further incite into not only the state of Ferelden during the game, but also giving background into a plethora of characters that are in the game--from those who are children of characters in the game, to those who are directly in the game. The book gives beautiful insight into Loghain, for instance, that you would unfortunately miss out on with just the game content alone.

Dragon Age [IDW Comic] • Date Unknown!

"The Dragon Age comic was a monthly publication written by Orson Scott Card and Aaron Johnston, with art by Humberto Ramos and Mark Robinson. A total of 6 issues were published by IDW Publishing, available in both print and digital forms" -As per the Wiki![dragonage.fandom.com]

The story focuses on the use of magic, and the relationship between templars and mages, both maleficarum and Circle ones. The main story follows Gleam, daughter of a mage and a templar, raised by a blacksmith outside of Chantry's influence.

The comic series is largely ignored cause it’s not good and it kind of doesn’t follow the lore correctly. Ghil Dirthalen on YouTube has a video reviewing it.

Mark Darrah (a Dragon Age BOSS) stated in the comment section of this video, "Some day, Mike [Laidlaw] and I may be on a panel together, and REALLY drunk, and we will "talk" about this series. Probably not but maybe."

You can find them here, if interested in reading them!

Dragon Age: Journeys [2-D flash game] • Date Unknown / Pre-Origins

Dragon Age Journeys was a single player 2D glash game released in 2009 that told a story in 3 chapters. The gameplay is noted to be similar to a tactical rpg, where there was stilll classes, spells, talents, and sound effects. Music was taken from DA:O. The story, however, is consisted non-canon to the dragon age universe.

You could play as human noble, dalish elf, city elf, dwarf nobel, dwarf commoner, and mage. Like Origins, this game has individual back stories for each character.

Journeys was written in Adobe Flash, which has been restricted or removed from many popular browsers for a multitude of reasons, and this Dragon Age: Journey's disappeared with it.

Where to Play
You should still be able to play the game through the Flashpoint Database[flashpointarchive.org]!

You can find a direct link to it in the collections here![flashpointproject.github.io]

It is also on Newgrounds! [www.newgrounds.com]

The story's main quests consisted of these:

Flight to Orzammar - Surprised and slaughtered by the darkspawn and their mysterious leader, you were the sole survivor of your group. You reached Orzammar more dead than alive, attempting warn of the danger that lay on Deep Roads.

The Missing Warden - Alone in Orzammar, you gathered support for your quest to warn the king of the oncoming darkspawn threat. You found allies in a healer named Ardum and a Grey Warden named Martine.

The Run Around - Your attempts to warn the King were confounded by various citizens of Orzammar who insisted that you do small favors for them before they would help you. You eventually got on the good side of the crime lord Saria by attempting to track down the whereabouts of her diamond smugglers.

A Rumbling in the Deep - Your party encountered the powerful darkspawn emissary in a nearby diamond mine, where he had hordes of darkspawn digging for some unknown reason. Already weakened from powering his digging machines, you were able to defeat the emissary, but he manages to escape. You shut down the emissary's excavation site, but are left wondering what he was searching for...

Toil and Trouble - Recover 2 Deep Mushroom Stalks from the Deep Roads for Arteme's brew.

As excepted, the lovely Ghil Dirthalen has done a video on this game! Check it out!

Dragon Age: Legends [flash game] • Date Unknown / Between DA:O and DA:II

Dragon Age Legends was a flash originally exclusive to Facebook and Google+ game set in the Dragon Age universe and was later available as a single-player downloadable game . It is the successor to Dragon Age Journeys and is the tie-in to Dragon Age II.

Combat in the game is turn-based, with your group of characters situated on one side of the battle, and your enemy on the other. You can order your team to perform normal, magic, or special skill attacks, drink potions, or go on the defensive. And, of course, you'll need to be very careful that none of them die.

Dragon Age Legends is a fun role-playing game to create characters and gain experience and levels to make them stronger and stronger. It serves as a connection between Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2.

The story follows the protagonist, a trusted ally of Ravi, the current Viscount of Kaiten, as he sets out to discover the mysterious set of circumstances around Ravi's son, Eiton.

The wiki writes the plot as below: [dragonage.fandom.com]
"13 years have passed since a group of warriors led by the Templar Ravi banded together to prevent an abomination from destroying the Free Marches city of Kaiten in a hedonistic orgy of narcissism and opulence.

"The former Viscount Khedra spent most of his life as a venerated ruler, celebrated for his wisdom. Late in life, he started to change, beginning with the construction of a great coliseum where nobles' chosen champions competed for pride and glory. What began as games of entertainment quickly devolved into great spectacles of carnage punctuated by outlandish pageantry. The lesser nobles of Kaiten no longer settled their disputes in court, instead grievances big and small were decided by sword for the pleasure of an increasingly bloodthirsty populace.

"The Viscount's nephew, Ravi, and his allies discovered the source of Khedra's odd behavior: Khedra was possessed by a powerful Pride demon and was now an abomination. These heroes were able to defeat the demon in a fearsome confrontation, and mysteriously, you were there to aid them.

"Now, Ravi is the Viscount of Kaiten and you are one of his most trusted allies. When a mysterious set of circumstances begin to form around his son Eiton, you are the only one he trusts to save his son."

Ghil Dirthalen Video! As Usual! The amount of work she put into this one is fantastic!

Where to Play!

I found an offline version of the game on Archive.Org. It requires Adobe Air to play, which is no longer available. If anyone can ever make a solution to this, that would be cool. [archive.org]

There is also this version on uptodown that is also requires Adobe Air![dragon-age-legends.en.uptodown.com]

The Hack and Slash Remix

This is about a 25 minute play based on the original Legends game, where the combat is remixed from the original tactical game, to a more action based hack and slash format. It, unfortunately, does not have the story that the original game did.

You can find the game accessible on newgrounds![www.newgrounds.com]

Dragon Age II [Base Game] • 9:30-9:37 Dragon (All DLC Happen In The Base Games Timeline)

The game here follows the character Hawke, spanning over a decade of their life, showing their story. A thing to be mentioned is that the developers had hoped to call the game Dragon Age: Exodus so the game would work as a bridge into Inquisition, in a manner of speaking, originally built as an expansion pack to DA:O. -As cited here[www.pcgamesn.com].

Mark Darrah also goes indepth on what this game was supposed to be and the development process here...which I think is important to understanding the game for what it is. It truly is a lovely crafted story!

The timeline of the game is like this:

Prologue - 9:30 Dragon.

Act 1 - 9:31 Dragon (post-Awakening)

Act 2 - 9:34 Dragon

Act 3 - 9:37 Dragon.

Ending cutscene - 9:40 Dragon.
Dragon Age: Redemption [Machinima Web Series] • 9:31-9:34 Dragon (same time as DAII)

Dragon Age: Redemption is a six-part webseries based on the Dragon Age video game series developed by BioWare. It was created by and stars Felicia Day, who plays Tallis--a character that ties into the DAII Mark of the Assassin DLC.

Dragon Age: Asunder [novel] • 9:40 Dragon

This novel centers around how the Templar Order, the Seekers of Truth and the Circle of Magi all broke off from Chantry control and engaged in a full scale Mage-Templar War.

This novel also does a wonderful job of introducing the character, Cole, who we meet in DA:I.

"A mystical killer stalks the halls of the White Spire, the heart of templar power in the mighty Orlesian Empire. To prove his innocence, Rhys reluctantly embarks on a journey into the western wastelands that will not only reveal much more than he bargained for but change the fate of his fellow mages forever." -Amazon Book Description

Dragon Age: The Masked Empire [novel] • 9:40 Dragon
Dragon Age: The Masked Empire is a novel by BioWare writer Patrick Weekes.

The Amazon synopsis says, "Empress Celene of Orlais rose to the throne of the most powerful nation in Thedas through wisdom, wit, and ruthless manipulation. Now, the empire she has guided into an age of enlightenment is threatened from within by imminent war between the templars and the mages even as rebellion stirs among the downtrodden elves. To save Orlais, Celene must keep her hold on the throne by any means necessary. Fighting with the legendary skill of the Orlesian Chevaliers, Grand Duke Gaspard has won countless battles for the empire and the empress. But as the Circle fails and chaos looms, Gaspard begins to doubt that Celene's diplomatic approach to Orlais's problems will keep the empire safe. Perhaps it is time for a new leader, one who lives by the tenets of the Chevalier's Code, to make Orlais strong again. Briala has been Celene's handmaid since the two of them were children, subtly using her position to help improve the lives of elves across Orlais. She is Celene's confidante, spymaster, and lover, but when politics force the empress to choose between the rights of the elves and the Orlesian throne, Briala must decide where her true loyalties lie."

The game sets up the political climate Orlais is in, in DA:I. However note, the plot follows BioWare's own canon, meaning it may not follow some of the player's choices in the games.

The Last Court [Free Browser Game] • Between DAII and DA:I

Dragon Age: The Last Court is a text-based, free-to-play browser game that serves as an interquel between Dragon Age II and Dragon Age: Inquisition, that was released on November 7, 2014.

It unfortunately shut down in 2020, despite some fans not being ready to say goodbye to the game.

It foreshadowed some of the main game’s events. Players took the role of the Marquis of Serault, a small town on the edge of the Orlesian Empire. The game tasked players with restoring their family’s honor by impressing the Devine during an official visit. Along the way, they would interact with quirky characters, suppress uprisings, and unravel the secrets of the mysterious town.

In the Ghil Dirthalen video comment section, she states,

'"What is this?" You are probably asking. The purpose of this video is 100% just archival footage. No commentary (because when I tried, it was clunky at best), no music. Just footage of the game, all in hopes that one day it will come back.

I recorded this footage when I was preparing to do an overview video on the game (linked in description), so it was never actually meant to be seen in full. As such, there are a few awkward edits and near the end of the game I totally didn't linger on the words long enough to be easily read. Now that the game is gone, I thought it would be best to upload what I had, in case people wanted to see how the game was played from start to finish. I do have one other play through that I did for the video, but I have lost the ending to that particular play through. If you have an interest in that footage, message me and I can get what I have to you.

Other than the (non-canon) Dragon Age theme park ride, this is the only other piece of lost Dragon Age media to date. While a wonderful group was able to screenshot most of the game (link in description), due to the nature of this thing, its almost unreadable to anyone who doesn't know how the game works. Hopefully seeing it played will answer some questions, along with spreading information about the game to hopefully let Bioware know that we still care!

Because there really isn't that much documentation on the game play, I do want to open up this footage to be used by anyone. So if somewhere in the future, you want to talk about this game, feel free to chop this bad boy up and slap it somewhere."'

i hate media that becomes lost. I hope the game is able to be returned one day.

Dragon Age: Deception [Dark Horse Comics] • 9:44-9:45 Dragon
Dragon Age: Deception is a three-issue comic by BioWare and Dark Horse Comics. It is written by Nunzio DeFilippis and Christina Weir and illustrated by Fernando Heinz Furukawa.

It tells the tale of Olivia Pryde, a failed actress turned con artist, as she targets the heir of a wealthy house, Calix Qintara. "At a tavern, she targets Calix, a young man she believes to be the scion of the reclusive Magister Qintara, only to discover that he is also a con-artist like herself albeit with less experience. Following a confrontation, Olivia and Calix agree to cooperate in targeting a pair of siblings, Francesca and Florian Invidus, but their competitiveness undermines their ruse and forces them to flee from the Invidus' guards. The pair, along with Olivia's pet Mabari hound Autumn, run into Ser Aaron, a former lover and mark of Olivia who offers them protection from their pursuers by his friend, the Magister Dorian Pavus. In exchange, Aaron secures their cooperation to assist his squire Vaea to break into the Qintara estate and retrieve the red lyrium that was previously stolen from the city-state of Kirkwall during the events of Knight Errant, as Ventus is on the verge of an invasion by the Qunari." -From the Wiki![en.wikipedia.org]

Heroes of Dragon Age [mobile game] • Shut Down / Non-Canon

Heroes of Dragon Age was a freemium mobile game released in 2013. In the game, you could collect characters from the Dragon Age universe and form them into a squad to face human and AI enemies. It was a squad-based strategy game, and the battles played out automatically, where the outcome was contingent on the characters in the party, their abilities, formation, and rune buffs.

According to the Wiki:

"The game is light on lore, and rather than telling an original story, is instead based on "what if?" scenarios. Each quest—there are 16 available in the single-player format, exploring extant game lore—is a self-contained map and lets players re-experience key moments from not just the previous Dragon Age games, but also the novels, codex entries and more. For example, quests during the Fifth Blight, and quests telling the story of the fall of Arlathan are available. PvP battles and events are available as well."

The game was unfortunately shut down in 2023.

Here is a Gameplay Trailer from 2013!

Here is a Ghil Dirthalen Video about it, once again!
Dragon Age Keep [online application]

The Dragon Age Keep is an online application that allows players to tailor decisions made in Origins, II, and Inquisition, while also porting your characters into the game. The decisions you make in Origins and II can be imported into Inquisition, and is the only way to transfer choices into Inquisition.

When the protagonists from the previous games have been selected, an animated video, narrated by Varric, describing the events of the previous world states will play, because every time there is a branch in the story, the user can alter what happens. There is also a quick and easy way, called the Tapestry, in which you can just decide the choices quickly, and fix any errors that occur.

According to the wiki, "there are approximately 300 choices that can be made in the Keep."[dragonage.fandom.com]

An Official Feature Tutorial.

The World Lore Tab:
The world of Thedas has a long history, and more of it is uncovered with every new Dragon Age game, book, comic and movie. This tab is to sum up big events like that. You will see pins that pop up on the map, and at the top there is a slider to see the events happen by year. It will also tell you where the content is from. In my opinion, it's not as complete as I would like it to be, but it works as a fantastic refresher!
