Sequence of actions
1) Develop a concept and purpose (what exactly you want to convey to the audience);

2) Form a team. Main members: scriptwriter, director, cameraman (video + sound), actors. It is recommended to hire specialists. If it is too costly, you can invite people with the right skills. For example, a person who graduated from acting courses or amateur filming;

3) Create a script;

4) Select actors, costumes, locations for filming;

5) Purchase or rent equipment. More about what's needed below;

6) Set dates and times for filming;

7) Shoot all scenes.

Idea
How to make a video that viewers will love is a perennial question. The answer depends on the purpose. What are you making a video for?

Criteria for selecting an idea for a video:
  • Feasibility. For example, you want to capture a hot air balloon ride, but it's winter and it's not feasible. Instead, you can capture a skiing or snowboarding trip;

  • Relevance. This is important for both commercial and creative videos. For example, it would be relevant to make a video about the new TV series House of the Dragon in 2022 rather than Game of Thrones, which came out in 2019;

  • Relevance to the interests of the target audience (CA). For example, a cat owner would be interested in information about proper nutrition and hair care. A teenager who enjoys making videos would most likely be interested in advice on choosing equipment and improving their video editing skills;

  • Is it interesting to you? If you're going to dedicate most of your time to videography, it's best to choose a topic that inspires you.

Scenario
It's not just TV series, movies or short films that need a well-thought-out plot. Even commercials have a script. It's great if you have enough budget for a professional scriptwriter.

It's important to remember what is needed:
  • Plot - something happens and draws the viewer in;

  • Story development - talk more about what drew the viewer in;

  • The climax is the peak of passion;

  • The denouement is the result.

Questions to help work through the concept of the video:
  • Who is this material for?

  • What actions should it prompt?

  • What emotions to evoke?

  • How do you elicit the expected reaction from the viewer? (through lights, sounds, actors' phrases, voice-overs).

With this framework, you can write a short and concise script from scratch.

The next step is to choose a location and costumes. But for a short film or a full-fledged movie, you need a bigger set: a special pavilion or an open area. Clothes can be rented, sewn, bought or chosen from your closet.

A storyboard for the cameraman
To make a quality video, it's not enough to just pick up a camera and start filming. A storyboard is an aid to the cameraman and the whole team. Even a schematic drawing will help you understand what kind of shot it is and what should go into it.
Video shooting equipment
Camera
To shoot video with your own hands, you need to choose the right camera, light, sound, as well as equipment for stabilization and background.

For blogs and reviews, USB- and XLR-microphones are suitable, and for filming interviews on the street - radio loop systems and recorders. To consider suitable camera models you can pay attention to such models as Canon EOS C300 Mark III, Nikon D500, Panasonic Lumix DC-GH5 Body, Blackmagic Design URSA Mini Pro G2 or Panasonic HC-VX1.

Light
The type of equipment depends on the location, time of shooting and budget. If money is tight and the action takes place outdoors, a reflector is sufficient. It is not necessary for dynamic scenes, but in static shooting will help to correct shadows. Universal set of lighting equipment:
  • 2 monoblocks with stands;

  • 2 light modifiers;

  • set of reflectors 5in1 80 cm in diameter (universal version).
This set is more relevant for work in the studio, but also on the street light with modifiers will come in handy. For example, if the shooting takes place in the evening or there is not enough light. You can add different equipment to this set:
  • colored gel filters;

  • special effects equipment (fan, smoke machine, etc.).

Sound
For a professional video, it is essential to have quality sound. For recording vlogs or reviews, USB and XLR microphones such as the Rode Podcaster or Electro-Voice RE20 are used. For filming outdoor interviews, you can use radio loop systems or recorders, such as the Sennheiser EW 112P G4-A or Zoom H1n. You can also use gun microphones such as the Rode VideoMic Pro Rycote.
Video shooting
For high quality video is not enough only to use the purchase of a high-profile camera. Competent work of the operator is extremely important. In the next section we will share useful basics of video shooting.

Combination of individual plans
According to Kuleshov (the first to categorize close-up), there are 6 types of close-up:
  • "Detailed" - emphasis is placed on a tiny object or part of the body or subject in order to draw attention to a significant detail;

  • Close-Up - a dimensional portrait with a small space above the head and visible upper part of the shoulders, which is intended to convey an emotional state and create a connection with the audience;

  • Medium chest (first) - image of the person up to the waist;

  • Medium (second) - the footage goes above the knees and below the hips. This and the previous plan are ideal for dialogues;

  • General - the whole body of the hero is in the frame. Small gaps are visible under and above the hero. An excellent choice for dynamic scenes: chases, competitions, dances, duels;

  • Distant. Here the hero is just a piece of the overall landscape. This plan allows the audience to see the environment in which the hero is.

The combination of plans "through one" looks favorable. For example: general + medium, large + medium. The exception is the distant and general: they combine brilliantly with any other plan.

Placing objects on the screen
There are several common ways of positioning characters in a cardre:
  • The principle of thirds. Turn on the "grid" mode on your camera, and three lines will divide the screen into nine equal sections. Objects are supposed to be placed on these lines or where they intersect. These are the areas that most attract the audience's attention;

  • Centering. This technique should be used with caution when you want to maximize the attention of the audience. Continuous use of this technique can cause the viewer's interest to dry up;

  • Right is forward, left is backward. People usually perceive movement to the right as forward and movement to the left as backward;

  • The space in front of the subject in motion. If we are showing a character moving, there should be more space in front of them than behind them. Otherwise, the viewer may feel uncomfortable watching.

Camera positioning
How do you create a compelling video? Choose the right place for the camera. This determines how successful the audience will be in interpreting the shots. A few popular choices are:
  • Top corner - shooting from above makes the character insignificant. Can be used for dramatic or comedic scenes;

  • Bottom angle - shooting from below shows the power and majesty of the subject;

  • Dutch angle - deliberately setting the horizon to tilt 10 degrees or more. This can convey a sense of loss of orientation, madness, stress to the character;

  • At the character's eye level - this is a classic approach that is mostly used in video;

  • POV (character's point of view) - from the character's face. This most expressively engages the viewer, making them complicit in the events.

Camera movement
Not only shooting from different positions helps to convey dynamics and atmosphere. Camera movement is also used for this purpose. It is recommended to use a stabilizer for painless dragging.

Popular Movements:
  • Approach - bring the camera closer to the subject. This can be slow or fast. Depending on the context and speed, it can reflect different emotions: drama, anxiety, horror, etc...;

  • Backing off - moving the camera away from the character. This can demonstrate the scale of events, the surrounding situation or alienation;

  • Sliding - moving past the subject. This adds more dynamics;

  • Descending - moving the camera downward. Can be used to show details or a character from a new perspective;

  • Raising - moving the camera up. Can be used to reveal the area behind an object or to convey the grandeur of a character;

  • Rotating around an object - wrapping fully or partially around an object. This shows the object from all sides, can increase the viewer's attention.
