Aiming spots
Whilst it seems like an obvious thing to say, the question remains in Insurgency, how exactly do you aim the M203/GP-25 grenade launcher?

For the TL;DR variant, simply refer to the two images below for the M203 and GP-25 respectively.

M203:

GP-25:
A bit more detail
Unfortunately, Insurgency does not give proper ironsights for the M203/GP-25 that the M16 or AK variants would actually have with them, so it's a bit of guess work and reference points to aim with them properly.

For the M203, it is the forward tip of the left rail which you use as an aiming reference. The round will land at around 40-50m on that spot. This makes the tip of that rail your "crosshair" for the M203.

The GP-25 is a little more fiddly though. There is no conveniently placed side rail to reference, and the ironsights are blended well into the weapon. However, the point where the weapon begins to curve on the left (As highlighted in the above image) is at around the same area as the M16's forward left rail. It takes a little more getting used to, but I've managed to get just as accurate as the M203 by using it.

EDIT:

When a patch changed the aiming spots of the GP/203, and was subsequently reverted, the above information was made accurate again with an exception. The rounds now fly a little higher than the original marks on the screenshots, so the lining up is correct, but the height to line up is not.

Instead, pull the weapon down a little when aiming until you are used to it. About in line with the weapon's tip of the irons, but still lined up with the marked area should have effective results.

As always, experience is the best teacher on this one, but this should help you adjust a little faster.
Finishing notes
A couple of things to note when using either grenade launcher variants:

  • Grenades require at least 15-20m to arm. Trying to hit a target closer than that will result in massive levels of disappointment.

  • Furthermore, you can NOT blunt enemies to death with an unprimed grenade. Attempting to do so will result in even higher levels of disappointment. Trust me, I've learned the hard way. A patch changed this and you can, to hilarious effect, blunt people. It is only recommended in extreme or drunken situations though.

  • The splash radius on the M203/GP-25 is very small. Less than half of a handheld frag grenade. On the flip side, you spawn with 4 of them.

  • After about 140m the grenade will detonate, regardless of whether it has actually made contact with anything. This means the M203/GP-25 effectively have a max range of 140m. If you're clever with angles and timing, you could potentially airburst somebody at max range though...

  • Using them out in the open is not recommended due to the small splash, a well aimed round/burst from the M16/AKM will do you much better. If you MUST use it in the open, aim for the feet of your target.

  • The grenades are much better used for dislodging awkward targets. MG or a Sniper in a window? Tube it. Awkward enemy sat behind hard cover capping one of your points? Tube it. Generally speaking, if it feels like shooting at the target would either be risky or unproductive, send them a little bundle of explosive happiness instead.

  • You cannot mortar the M203/GP-25. There is a skybox and it frowns upon your shenanigans.

  • Be extremely cautious when using the M203/GP-25 indoors or any other enclosed environment. A poorly aimed round can bounce off walls etc whilst it's still arming and it comes back your way, resulting in an embarassing death or worse, team kill. On the other hand, you may be able to potentially bounce a M203/GP-25 around tight walls, if you can have the round ultimately land at least 15-20m away.

That should be pretty much everything. Any questions, suggestions, or more relevant info than mine, feel free to post it in the comments and I'll answer/update accordingly.

EDIT: Included an extra bullet point on usage in close quarters/cramped environments.

EDIT EDIT: Updated info on blunting targets as well as further notes on aiming.

Correct, this guide is no longer required.

I may update it with the distances relative to aiming points on the new sights, as I'm currently unsure what the tip of the new irons are set at (Feels around 30-50m), but that'll be when I get a little spare time.

Obsolete now, grenade launcher sights have been added officially.

Also, added some notes to make the guide a little more up to date, until some real sights come out.

That's good to hear, it may be worth noting the relative age of this guide though.

I would be quite happy to see this guide become redundant, proper GP/203 sights have always been a small wish of mine for Insurgency.

Sights for M203 and GP25 is being developed officially, go see screenshots on the Insurgency Roadmap.

In a bizzare twist of fate, the aiming system has been reverted and I didn't actually need to get around to updating the guide at all. Fancy that.

Therefore, this guide can now be considered about 95% accurate. I'll have to review the fine details in case ranges of GP-25 / M203 were changed etc.

@IceFoxx you are quite correct, this guide is still accurate to PRE-Nightfall update. They added in blunting people as a new feature.

Fun fact for you though, you can blunt yourself with some careful (Or totally unlucky, *ahem*) working of the angles to have the round bounce back to you before it detonates. :p

there is only one mistake. You definetly CAN kill an enemy with an unarmed/not-exploding nade (fired to close).

Trust me. I learned the hard way.

@Vahannema Yeah, that may be the case now after the Nightfall update, but this guide can also be useful for those who don't want to dump 2 points into a dedicated scope for whichever reason they prefer.

Also, I will update this guide to be post-nightfall accurate. Soon. Eventually.

I find that when using the granade launcher, I use the 2x red dot. When I then aim down sights, you can see exactly where you aim in the sights, appart from just judging from the side of the gun.
