Introduction
[WARNING - DISCUSSION OF GAME FILES - MAY BE A FUN KILLER]

I have spent quite a long time playing this game and it stopped being fun with no idea how to progress, so I started taking a look at some of the game files. Hopefully, the info below will help people look in the right direction, without cheating or removing their sense of achievement.

This is designed as a companion to this guide, by 0FarFromFamous0.

I discovered the list of objectives, and decided to map them to the items in the guide in the same format.

These do not always match the names of the events they are garnered from, but they do tell us two things:

  • That there are no intentional blank lines in the journal
  • The internal names used for all the entries

The list below shows the key sections from the journal, but with the internal objective names included. 'TBC' where we haven't confirmed a missing entry, then 'X)' for objectives that haven't been discovered (most match up). I used 'N)' for the beaver one that triggers but is not in the journal.

Looking at the names of some of them, there is a possibility some are not triggering correctly (OBJ_CAMPEATRAWMEAT, for instance). The porcupine one makes me concerned a fresh run with Gale is required (and potentially others). I haven't finished nosying around, but I thought this might be useful if people want to try getting a moose to lick them or something.

Accurate Map
This is the full map the game uses for navigation. 'Gee' will take you to the down-right diagonal from your starting position, 'Haw' will take you up-right. Some events only appear based on the terrain type.

If anyone figures out what 'o' is, please add a comment. The upper case letters are from the game files, but I am not clear on their significance yet (it may be that it signifies tiles where certain rarer evens can occur).

Play Styles
There are three play styles:
  • Balanced
  • Conquerer
  • Fatalist
They appear to be numerically scored on an individual basis, so based on decisions made against events, points will presumably be added, resulting in an overall style for the run.

It seems that the occurence of some things in the game are based on being in certain play style (some events may play out differently).

I found a table in the cabin which the musher "scavenged" for birch wood. Thought it might be one of the missing Live Off The Land entries, but the journal didn't update at the end of the run.

They just released a new update for the game on June 3rd. I was taking a look through the changed files and in the tile assets I noticed they had a tilelayouts_cliffs along with the ones you have mentioned. I wonder if this is the unknown tiles on the map? This is a link to the changes: https://steamdb.info/patchnotes/14566704/ I am going to try and make a new save and see if they have finally fixed the game so the final achievement is obtainable!

@Happy that sounds strange. I managed to get that by following the steps by DS | Pyxis in the other guide (linked at the start of this one). It sounds like you've done that, so maybe there's some kind of bug. Did you get the on-screen notification? All I can suggest is that you try it again and see if anything else happens. You still get the entries if you get a game over, so you can check it pretty much as soon as it happens.

As a side note, the final achievement is still evading us all on here. Who knows if it is unlockable at all in a legitimate way.

Hey. I wondered if you could help me, I'm chasing the "Beavers have good aim" journal objective. My save has 40 hours in it, just missing the final achievement. I've been nearly hit multiple times, and today I was finally hit by the tree and injured. However, at the end of the run when I made it back to the cabin, it wasn't listed in the journal... Am I missing something? I'm trying to get the encounter again but I've only had it the once so far.

OK, nevermind all that, I see OBJ_SEEFOREST does not have a "grantobjective" either so that theory is all wrong.

(second comment because the first one was too long otherwise)

I've tried asking a few people on Steam who have the journal achievement how they got it, but not having a lot of luck with that either. Of the two people I've asked they both claim that it was legit but don't really want to send their save file or pictures of their journal. If they're telling the truth that would make it even stranger why they were able to get it.

I think you're right... I've looked a little at it myself and even the dialogue matches with the Bodega event (if you look at "thinicecard"). That's very discouraging, as if a piece of code is missing to actually add a new entry, there is no "grantobjective" anywhere which you do see with the other obj_ entries. The same goes for obj_campeatrawmeat, obj_campmakefire, obj_bunnychomperattack, obj_mooseattack, obj_mooselick and obj_porcupinescavenge, but obj_squirrelbirdkill and obj_bunnynamedfluffington do have a "grantobjective" so maybe those two are just not found yet. (You are obviously much more skilled at this so take the things I've found with a grain of salt, I might be wrong at this.)

I looked for some details relating to the OBJ_THINICE event. The only one I see with the name is the Bodega arc when you fall through the ice.

It has the following requirements:

player.hasDoneRealityNar(1)
player.hasDoneRealityAttack(0)
dogTeam.bodega(1)
world.region.river || world.region.lake || world.region.coastal

The last one is where we need to be (an icy place). The first 2 relate to the 'reality narrative' and 'reality attack'. I think the former may be the main story but not 100% on the latter. The number may be a true/false value - so player has NOT done a reality attack (this may relate to unavoidable wolf/bear attacks).

The 3rd item tells us it needs to be with a team including Bodega.

I tried a Bodega team and triggered the event to check it out again, but there were no options and it was all quite passive. It appears to be the only event called 'thinice' in the file, so not currently sure if it is a bugged event or the name of the OBJ_ is a red herring.

I've done a few runs with Gale (so far I haven't completed any of the dogs' stories on this save file yet), but I couldn't discover any new outcomes. The only variable I have discovered is in the second event with the porcupine in the tree. If you shoot the porcupine it either falls on Gale's head or it doesn't, but I have not seen any changes in the third event with either outcome. I have also tried running to "o" a few times but I don't seem to get any other events there either. I hope you can find something out about the playstyles, that seems to be a big missing key in this mystery.
imnotgoats  [author] Mar 23, 2024 @ 4:40pm
That might indeed be the case.

I also did a run eating nothing but raw meat, which didn't do anything, as well as hanging around on the 'o' section of the map.

I think the playstyle thing might actually help with increasing the probability of certain events, but I'm looking into the specifics to try and get something more concrete.
