Gabriel Knight 3 - Windows 10 Fix

The patch referenced in this guide will fix Gabriel Knight 3 for Windows 10 including: ability to choose from multiple resolution options (up to 1920 x 1080), fix lag and flickering issues, and fix the "insert CD1" problem.

This patch contains three files that make the game work on modern systems.

INCLUDING:

1. GK3.exe file - Fix for "Insert CD1" problem

2. dgVoodoo file - Fix for modern day OS compatibility (Windows 8, 8.1, 10)

3. Gk3Launcher - Fix for graphic boost from low resolutions to full HD resolutions. *Always run the game from this.

Disclaimer

Due to a very bad experience with the Steam guide bots, I no longer include specific file paths or links of any kind. I will, however, describe in detail exactly what you need to do to install the fix.

I am not the creator of these fixes, as they are available on Nexus Mods, uploaded by hertta and created by Dege and Braddabug. The reason I created this guide was because of the lack of any Steam guides that include these specific fixes.

Where To Download The Patch

You can download this patch via Nexus Mods by using any search engine and searching for "Gabriel Knight 3 Windows 10 Fix".

Installation

IMPORTANT: Perform steps in this order

1. EXE FIX:

- Copy GK3 . exe from the zip file into the Gabriel Knight 3\GK3 game directory and replace the old GK3 . exe file.

2. DGVOODOO FIX:

-Unzip dgVoodoo to your preferred location.
-Go to the folder MS -> x86. AND 3Dfx -> x86 Copy and paste ALL the files to your Gabriel Knight 3\GK3 game directory. This is important. Copy the files, NOT the folders.
-Open dgVoodooCpl and add a new game. Choose the Gabriel Knight 3\GK3 folder and press OK.
-Go to DirectX TAB.
-Enable "Force VSync, Fast Video Memory Access". Disable "dgVoodoo Watermark".
- OPTIONAL for GOOD graphics: Change "Texturing filterin" (I use "Force anisotropic 16x).
- OPTIONAL for GOOD graphics: Change "Antialiasing (MSAA)" (I use "8x").
-KEEP Resolution setting "Unforced" and Appearance as "Unspecified" at the General-settings.
-Press "Apply" and "Ok".

3. GK3LAUNCHER FIX:

-Just copy Gk3Launcher . exe from the zip-file into the same directory with GK3 . exe
-USE THIS LAUNCHER EVERY TIME WHEN PLAYING/STARTING THE GAME!!!
-Choose the resolution what you want to use (I recommend 1920x1080, but smaller widescreen resolution like 1280x720 looks also VERY nice and soft in a good way).
-If after starting the launcher you see no resolution options, go to the properties of Gk3Launcher . exe and set it to Windows Vista Compatibility Mode
-Start the game and enjoy!

-After starting the game:
Go to the Settings and make sure your in-game settings like Texture, Lighting and LOD (level of details) are HIGH/Full.

ATTENTION: If the game still prompts "Insert CD1" after installing these fixes, the solution is very easy: Run ANY ISO-file at your computer BEFORE launching the game. After that, the game will start as it should.

Do you perhaps have a fix for a Win11 x64 user?
I am saddened by the fact that one of my earliest games is in a such bad state. I cant even run it.

I've tried with the regedit 1024, reverts automaticaly to 640, launches, the intro movie is totaly out of bound i see maybe 1/5 of what is happening and then error message, "VIEWPORT IS OUTSIDE SCREEN BOUNDARIES"...now not even that as i was tampering with the compatibility to win8 and win vista and xp an so on, now only the aplication is already running which it isnt...

please help, its one of my childhood favourite games
