Playing Custom Missions with Dark Forces: Remaster

This is a simple guide on how to play custom Dark Forces missions with Dark Forces: Remaster.

How to run Dark Forces Mods & Missions

All mods are hosted on DF-21 [df-21.net]

The Best way to play mods is using The Force Engine[theforceengine.github.io]. It supports remaster graphics and it also allows you to use quicksaves.

Downloading Mods

1. Go to the DF-21 Mission Browser [df-21.net]

2. Choose a mod you want to play and click on it (preferably rated Gold or 5 stars).

3. Download the latest mod version (Typically Modern Version) zip file.

Without The Force Engine

4. Unzip the mod contents into your Dark Forces Remaster folder
(Ex: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\STAR WARS Dark Forces Remaster)

5. Double click on <mission>.bat file (Ex: asteroid.bat )

With The Force Engine

4. Place the mod without unzipping in to your TFE folder (ex: C:\TheForceEngine\Mods )

5. Open TFE and go to your MODS section and choose a mod to play.

Top Missions to Try

The best maps according to the community are Gold-starred maps. There are also great 5 and 4 starred maps.

Here are my personal favorites.

Steam Deck Guide

Download the mod contents to your deck and unzip them. Then Add the batch file (Ex: asteroid.bat ) as a Non-Steam game to your library. This will allow you to leverage the Proton compatibility tools to allow you to run the Windows batch file and play the mod.

After adding asteroid.bat, click on the settings cog wheel in the top right of the screen for the asteroid.bat "game", go to Properties -> Compatibility -> and force the use of Proton 9.0-4

It should do it automatically, but make sure that TARGET contains "/home/deck/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/STAR WARS Dark Forces Remaster/asteroid.bat", with quotes and START IN should have /home/deck/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/STAR WARS Dark Forces Remaster/

That explains it - the guide is for Windows based machines. I strongly urge you to use The Force Engine if you want to run mods on Linux since the process is a lot easier. We posted a remastered solution for you to try in df-21's discord's #support channel.

I tired the asteroid mission. Put it in the remastered folder the same as pictured above. When i double click the mission .bat it loads the kate text app. Im playing on my steam deck so I dont know if that makes a difference. I checked the discord, but didnt see anything else I could different to get it working.

I tried the no force engine method but it doesn't load. A text box (mission).bat appears, but that's it
