Analog Controls on Keyboard and Mouse (The Proper Way)
By Zdann
A better way to enable the Analog fight type on Keyboard and Mouse. Also allows you to get the Swing them sticks achievement without a controller.

Intro
Dead Island has a fun and gimmicky alternative control scheme called Analog Fighting. It lets you choose which direction to swing your melee weapons instead of just mashing the attack button. There's even an achievement related to it called "Swing them sticks". Unfortunately, you can only enable this on a controller by default.

Previously, if you wanted to enable this control scheme on keyboard and mouse, you'd use the Analog Mod made by Isador. But this came with some drawbacks that made playing through the game with it unfeasible:
  • The mod required you to swap your input device to a Controller, which caused menus and prompts to display controller buttons instead of keyboard binds.
  • Trying to accept a quest would softlock the game, because the buttons for accepting and declining quests are hardcoded on a controller.
  • Upgrading skills could occasionally softlock the game and break keyboard inputs entirely.

After spending way too long delving into the files, I figured out a very simple way to enable this mode on keyboard and mouse without any hacky workarounds.
Prerequisites
To enable this, all you need is the Dead Island Save Editor:
https://www.steffenl.com/projects/dead-island-save-editor/releases
To keep things simple, download the version shown here and install it:

By default, Analog Fighting swaps your attack inputs while using melee weapons. You hold Mouse 2 to initiate attacks, and hold Mouse 1 to initiate throws. If you prefer to have your inputs un-swapped, I've made an optional, modified inputs.scr file that reverts this behavior:

Place this in
C:\Users\[Your Username]\Documents\DeadIsland\out\data
If the data folder doesn't exist, create it.
How to Enable It
Step 0. (OPTIONAL)
Before doing anything else, make sure your key bindings are set up the way you want. If you try editing them after enabling Analog Fighting, it will revert to Digital and you'll have to follow this guide again.

Additionally, if you installed the modified inputs.scr file, you will have to set up your key bindings again.

Step 1.
Close the game if it's running. Run the Dead Island Save Editor, and select your Dead Island profile (not your save) by double clicking it:

Step 2.
Click the "Advanced" tab on the top, and scroll down until you find "FightType":

Step 3.
Double click on "1" and change it to "0":

Step 4.
Hit CTRL + S, or go to File > Save to save your changes:

If it asks you to Sync with Steam Cloud, hit Yes:

And you're done!
How to Disable It
To disable Analog Fighting, simply edit any settings in the Controls section in-game and hit OK. This will revert the Fight Style to Digital.

If you installed the modified inputs.scr file, you'll have to delete it before doing this. As a reminder, it's located in
C:\Users\[Your Username]\Documents\DeadIsland\out\data
This will also restore your original binds.

Thanks it works! It took me a bit to get the hang of, but roaming around doing quests helped pass the time :mhwgood:
