The Way of the Tortoise (some nice loot)
Von Chassidim
There is a flipped over tortoise in the Rails Nomad Camp. If you help it and follow it through the map (or be lazy and go to the spot where the loot is right away^^), you can get some nice loot.

Where is it?
EDIT: First of all, it is not neccessary to find the turtoise in the Hobo Camp at all. You can go to to loot-spot right away and start digging, if you know where the mound will be (Check screenshots). It doesn't depend on Perception or anything else, just ram your Shovel into the right place and you're good to go! (Thanks to LFox for trying this.)

You can find the tortoise in the Rail Nomads Camp. It's in the northern part of the World Map, just past some radiated areas.

How to find it inside the camp?
The tortoise is found in the northern part of the Rail Nomads area (the first area you visit in this general location). It is located a bit west from the northern hobo-camp.

To "activate" it, you need someone with the "Animal whispering"-skill. If you don't have anyone, you still could recruit Ralphy, if you managed to save him from drowning after entering the area. (He is located inside one of the train cars in the center part of the map after you've rescued him.)

EDIT: You can also use Brute Force to flip the turtle over! (Thanks to dwringer and Draegnar)

After you used the skill on the tortoise, it will begin moving. It first moves south, out of the hobo-camp. It then follows a path, that leads it to the main meeting hall (where the clan leader is located), past it's back and down further to the south.
Where does it go? (And why for the love of god is it so slow)?
You have to be patient, the tortoise takes forever to reach it's location.

You can follow it on it's path or just move to it's final location and in the meantime drink 10 coffee, write a bestseller or learn french (yes, it takes so long). The final location is at the bank of the river, in the southern part of the map. BEWARE: If you haven't been in this area before, you should clear it of the mines first. There are lots of mines and you could easily die, if you blindly run into them.

Once it arrives at it's final destination, the poor thing dies and leaves some mound of dirt. If you have a shovel (if not, you should find one, it's really useful), you can dig up the good stuff.

Now give me the loot already!!
All right, once the little fellow died a heroic death and you got your hands dirty, you get some random loot. I don't know how random it is, i tried it a couple of times and I always got the following:

  • A rifle
  • A weapon mod
  • An armor
  • A trinket
  • Some ammunition

I don't know if it's possible to save before digging up the loot and reload if you're not satisfied. But anyhow, it's still some nice loot.

EDIT: You can reload and the loot will be rerolled! (Thanks to Draegnar)

Here's what i got in my last try:

So I hope you enjoyed this little guide. Have fun in Wasteland 2, it's a great game.

If you save and load while waiting for the tortoise, the tortoise disappears. But eventually the dig spot is still revealed.

Followed the tortoise around since I couldn't make out the location based on the pictures.
It died eventually and I can't dig anywhere near it (or on it). 30 minutes of tortoise watching... For nothing... Oh well...

Thank you for this guide, as I may not have found the mound without it. Here is my story: after using animal whisper on the tortoise I began following it just out of curiosity. I knew something was up when it didn't disappear pass the hobo camp, as I know of at least one instance (without giving away spoilers) of a set of NPCs that are not meant to be followed who disappear a short time later if you follow them. So anyway, I continued following it till it died but here is the weird part, it didn't die any where near the mound. It actually died on the path near the big rock and land mines a ways away from the mound. I'm pretty sure the reason why is because I followed it too closely, as there seemed to be some kind of weird pathing issue where my rangers would just run in place whenever the tortoise passed under them. Here is a screenshot of where it died: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=503241090

curios note, if you use the shovel on the turtle instead of animal whisper, you bury him alive!, and feel like an asshole afterwards

(Hella late to the party, Google OP) I don't think it's been mentioned but it's definitely worth noting: (Slight spoiler, but nothing relevant to the story) In the endings bit after you beat the game, it mentions that flipping the turtle causes a chain of events that, in three years, results in robots killing everyone in Rail Nomad. RIP Rail Nomad :squirtyay:

I timed how long it takes for the tortoise to take you to his loot. It's 30 minutes give or take a few seconds. :ss13ok:

Also, when you first meet the tortoise, the description you get in the bottom right is near identical to the question Leon gets from Holden as part of his V-K test in the first scene of Blade Runner. Easter eggs rule!
