Official Translation Tool Guide

The official Liftoff Translation Tool guide.

Introduction

We’re rolling out the Beta version of the Liftoff Translation Tool. Now, you can create your very own game translations!

Notes:

• The tool is still in its Beta phase, features might change over time.
  
• At the moment, the tool can only handle translations with Latin character sets.

Create your own translation

Step 1. Exporting a translation template

To create a translation template, open the Export Template menu and choose a language template.

Click on [Export] and a template will be created at the specified file location.

You can copy the location in the confirmation window.

For future reference, the file location is also available in the Import Menu.
You can now edit the template to start making own translation!

Step 2. Opening and editing the working file

Navigate to the working file at the location copied earlier.

Now that we have located the working file, we can start editing it. The working file is in CSV format, a very simple plain-text formatting that can be edited in all common text editors such as NotePad or TextEdit. However, we strongly recommend importing the working file into a spreadsheet editor such as Microsoft's Excel or Google Sheets and editing it there. This will prevent you from accidentally invalidating the file structure.

In this example we’ll be using Google Sheets:
Import your 'TranslationSpreadsheet.csv' file into Google Sheets.

Note: Do NOT convert text to numbers, dates and formulas.

You can now start your own translation by replacing the text in the ‘Text’-column!

Note: Make sure to preserve any text with curly braces (eg. '{0}') in your own translation, integrate them in a grammatically sensible way.

Once you are done making your changes, export the file as *.csv again.

And finally replace the original ‘TranslationSpreadsheet’ with your edited version.
Note: Make sure the file name is still ‘TranslationSpreadsheet’!

You can now Import your translation!

Step 3. Importing the working file

Import the working file from the Translation Tool menu.

Note: If something went wrong during import, an error code will be displayed that you can screenshot for support.

Should you use a currently unsupported Language Code, you can still adjust the language code from the dropdown in this menu.

If you make any more changes in ‘TranslationSpreadsheet.csv’ outside of Liftoff, you can reimport your working file with the [Reimport Working File] button!

Finally press the [Save as New] button to save your file as a new translation. Later, you can always use the [Save] button to overwrite your own existing languages!

Congratulations!
You have now added your very own translation to Liftoff!

Managing and sharing your own translations

You can find, manage and share your translations from the ‘My Translations’ menu!

Note: If multiple translations share the same Name, a number will be added next to its name in the list. Note that this number is NOT permanent: any time the game launches, the translation's numbers and position in the list might change.

Workshop & Guide

Just like you can share your own translations through the Steam Workshop, you can browse the translations of other Liftoff community members via the [Community Translations] button.

If your TranslationSpreadsheet.csv contains Korean, Liftoff is unable to import that translation file.

The only available language for what exactly?
The game natively supports English, French and Ukrainian, however this guide only exists in English.
