Very quick comparsion of NYGM, GWX, and LSH3 Mods
By Woody
A very quick comparison of these three mods to help anyone trying to decide which to use.

I do not compare realism since it is subjective and hard to quantify. I am also only considering the mods that are downloaded with the main mod.

I do not have any recommendation of which mod is better or which one to use. I recommend any of the mods I write about in this guide and have gotten many hours of enjoyment out of them all.

NYGM
Less eye candy compared to GWX and LSH3

Tougher to evade and remain undetected by escorts than GWX and LSH3

Less ship types than LSH3, a little less than GWX

Aircraft more deadly in my opinion

Quicker load times

Less ship traffic than LSH3, seems a little less than GWX, harder to find targets

Overall less attention to eye candy and more attention to gameplay mechanics

I would recommend only using NYGM after getting some what confident in your abilities to evade escorts and have had some success.
Grey Wolves
More attention to the details in ports, including port traffic, ships, etc.

The least amount of player choice for mods included in download

Longest load times, has been around 3-5 minutes for me.

If you like to use TC to get out to sea it takes a little longer since your crew will be spotting quite a few ships as you leave port. There is a mod included with the download to lessen port traffic.

Overall a good balance between NYGM and LSH3.
Living Silent Hunter 3
Even more detail regarding ports, has the most activity which includes people walking, vehicles moving, dry docks, ships traffic, etc

The easiest mod in regards to remaining undetected and evading escorts. You will almost need to go out of your way to get detected.

Aircraft in this mod are a small threat similar to vanilla.

Includes locks for canals and ports when appropriate.

The most options for graphics, difficulty and GUI included with the download. It is well suited for beginners, and the most adaptable to fit your preferences.

Has the most ship types.

Allows planning to be involved in historical naval operations. In the F1 menu there is a list of dates and locations of future operations as well as radio messages. Other mods will only do this via radio messages so you will not always be able to plan to take part. Yoou also will get plenty of notice via radio messages usually during your patrol around 30 days in advance.

A lot more ship traffic compared to other mods. You will have many patrols where if you attacked every small convoy and lone merchant you will be out of torpedoes before making ½ way to your patrol grid. You will not have trouble finding targets or convoys. I managed to run into 6 large convoys on one patrol.

The load times are longer than NYGM but still shorter than GWX.

Getting a new sub involves transferring back to the German training facility(I forget the German name) and conducting a war time sea trial. Then transferring back to your Flotilla or a new one. The good news is that new U-Boats only cost 100 renown.

This mod in my opinion is great for beginners.

Okay thanks. Will take a shot at the vanilla. Mostly I just want a graphical difference in mods instead of a big difficulty change either way

LSH is really easy, more ez than vanilla imo. But the graphics are f*cking beautiful. The load times are really long though too.
I played vanilla for easily over 300 hours before I started trying mods, even though the graphics aren't as nice as the super mods, I think it good to try out first so you have the original game to use a reference and comparsion for when you do try out mods.

I'm new to SHIII and started with the training. Then I installed GWX and tried some training again and didn't like it- mostly because I like being able to look around at the sub underwater. I also suspect based on what I've read that I wouldn't like the (realistic) hard difficulty around 1943. Do you recommend installing LSH before starting my first campaign or just doing vanilla first?

Thx, helps a lot!

thank you Woody, I have tried all three now ( but not on Steam) and agree with you on content and candy - though only just on first patrol in LSH3. I came on here to find out if a 3-5 minute load time was normal for LSH3 on an i5 machine. seems it is, though I agree with Pomf that GWX loads quicker than LSH3, even on my other machine which is older.
