Description
The kitchen was a gigantic, high-ceilinged room with five tables identical to the ones in the Great Hall above; they were also in the exact same position. There were large quantities of pots and pans heaped around the stone walls, presumably on counter-tops or stoves, and a large brick fireplace at the other end of the hall from the door.

Using their own skills in magic, the house-elves in the kitchens had created a village-like structure out of old barrels which was where they slept. It was implied they were bigger on the inside through a brand of the house-elves own magic, although no known wizard has ever looked inside one.
Location
Located under the Great Hall, close to the Hufflepuff common room, the kitchens were accessed through a large painting of a bowl of fruit. When tickled, a pear would giggle and turn into a large green door handle, allowing entrance to the kitchens. Here, house-elves could be found preparing feasts for the school's staff and students, which were magically sent up from tables to the dishes on the corresponding Great Hall tables above.
Function
"Each of these tables, Harry noticed as he passed them, was positioned exactly beneath the four House tables above, in the Great Hall. At the moment, they were clear of food, dinner having finished, but he supposed that an hour ago they had been laden with dishes that were then sent up through the ceiling to their counterparts above."
- The layout and function of the kitchens in relation to the House tables

All of the meals served at Hogwarts were prepared in the kitchen by the Hogwarts house-elves. The five tables in the kitchen were magically linked to the tables in the Great Hall, and dishes placed upon the tables would be transported to their counterparts in the Great Hall.

During the Triwizard Tournament there were a few changes made to the kitchen system. The addition of the Beauxbatons and Durmstrang students demanded a greater variety of dishes to better suit foreign tastes. In addition, during the Yule Ball, dining was accomplished through guests selecting their meal choices through menus.
