Playing back MIDI files on instruments
Von Madmijk
A basic explanation of how to play back MIDI arrangements on the instruments, and particularly on the MIDI Maestro with instruments connected.
Here the MIDI file used in the video.[towerunite.com]

Intro
The MIDI portion of the video starts at 6:54.
Virtual MIDI Input Device
You need to use an external program to emulate a MIDI passthrough device. This device will forward all MIDI events it receives to a corresponding MIDI input device.

One such program is LoopMIDI[www.tobias-erichsen.de].

It will run as a minimized taskbar icon. Configure it, and in that window, create a new passthrough device by clicking the "+" button. In this case, I called it "Virtual MIDI input."
MIDI Playback
Windows Media Player allows you to play back MIDI files. However, it will play it back on the default MIDI synthesizer (or output device), which we don't want. It also really does not do anything else. Here are some alternatives that are useful to this end and have more features. You only need one of these.

VanBasco's Karaoke Player
[www.vanbasco.com]

Ignore the separate windows that are impossible to arrange neatly. You can use the file browser to easily make playlists of MIDI files. You can also view the active notes on all channels, the used instruments, and mute and isolate channels.

Go to the setup parameters, and select the MIDI passthrough device you made in the previous section. You can now play back MIDI files into the passthrough device. Note that the passthrough device does not let you hear the instruments when you start playback, as this needs to happen inside Tower Unite.

MidiPlay
[chrishills.org.uk]

This program allows you to see the arrangement in musical notation, if you're into that. You can also view the used instruments, and mute and isolate channels.

Select your MIDI passthrough device here. You can even select multiple devices here. You can now play back MIDI files into the passthrough device.
Making Music

Enter your instrument of choice, go into the settings menu, and select your passthrough device. Start MIDI playback in your playback program now, and you will see the advanced section in the settings get populated with the instruments used in the MIDI arrangement.

Again, here is the MIDI file used in the demonstration in the video for you to play and experiment with.[towerunite.com]

Have fun!

If you're having problems getting your MIDI input to show, try restarting Tower Unite with the MIDI programs already running.

I did this a week ago and it worked fine, but now the MIDI device doesn't show up in the Device Selection box

If the drums aren't in channel 10, they aren't drums or the midi creator did something wrong.

What if the Drums aren't in channel 10?

The "MIDI Input" section of the instrument settings does not appear for me, even though my MIDI input is recognized in my DAW (and Rust for that matter). Idk what I'm missing here :cozypoechris:
