intro
UPDATE: As of "Major Patch 0.5.2", many multiplayer bugs have been fixed. The desync bug (where you become unable to attack, use abilities, use alchemy and your character sprite won't turn with your movement) can now be treated by rejoining ongoing sessions. To do so, open the menu (ESC), click RETURN TO MENU. Then, go back to the lobby you were in and press JOIN, where the READY button was. Consequently, the bugs I documented in this guide are no longer "fatal" per se, but I'll still update this for the hell of it, because this game's bugs are funny.

Needless to say, this update probably brought another unique set of bugs that I'll have to find over time.

The Genesis Project ™ is a Very Stable Game ™ that has little to no bugs that hinder your Gameplay Experience ™. Many of these bugs will definitely NOT break this game so bad that you will not be able to play further at all.

I'm making this guide because I have had to explain to other players why they shouldn't do certain things because the game will break way too many times. Use what's here as a guideline for what NOT to do during multiplayer games in order to maximize the lifetime of your session.
DON'T ALCHEMIZE WITH 3D ITEMS (DESYNC)
NOT CONFIRMED FOR 0.5.2

Some items in the game, such as the Laptop, Cake, or Perfectly Generic Object will appear as a 3D object with physics when they're not in your sylladex.
I first found this out long ago, when I tried to make an edible green cube by || combining it with a Cake. The moment the card was punched, I desynced. That is a rare occurence, as most of the time you'll actually just get disconnected. If you don't want either of these to happen, avoid doing any kind of alchemy where two (or more) 3D items are involved.

If you want to be funny and make an edible PGO either way, that can be done safely with the recipe: Perfectly Generic Object || Apple Juice
DON'T HOST WITH (some) MODS WHEN PLAYING WITH RANDOMS
If you're hosting a public session with random people, avoid having any mods installed that have to do with custom dungeons or land generation, such as some of the mods in this collection . If the other players don't have these mods, one/more/all of these things will happen:

  • lands will not be generated properly causing the ground to be pitch black in lieu of a texture
  • most or all dungeons won't be enterable
  • items dropped by players while on their land will fall through the ground
  • players will fall through the ground while on their land
  • players will die spontanenously
  • underlings will randomly spawn in front of the player falling from the sky
  • underlings will start floating in the air after being hit
  • players will be walking in the air

This essentially denies the other players most of the already little progression to be done in this game, and it happens because the modded land that was generated on the host's side is not the same as the land generated on the non-host player's side - the game generates lands on the client side for everyone...

As coordinating with random players is extremely limited because you don't have a direct line of communication with them, it's an extreme hassle to get these people to install the mods you have. Kicking them is (NOT) an option, that button now works in 0.5.2 IT WAS NEVER ACTUALLY FIXED. But if you want to play public multiplayer with mods you have these options: add every single person you meet in this game on discord, link them the mods you want them to install and wait (usually a long time) for them to finish installing the mods before eventually starting the session, at which point another person joins the lobby and you have to do it all over again; or start the session and cause the modless players to lose connection.

If you're only using mods that add items, those items will appear to the modless players as PGO's named "Internet Error". If you're hosting the game with these, they will find those in dungeon chests, and, many times, said chests will be full of "Internet Error", rendering them useless, possibly stripping the modless players of any progression in the game or drastically slow it down. I'm not sure if item mods break the game in a technical sense, but they will hinder the experience.[/b]

Exile and echeladder mods are fine and won't affect anything in the game, as they are just text files the game picks at random to display at the start of the session client-side.

MIND THE TIME PLAYER
At level 4, Time players are given the "CLONE" ability. This ability summons a clone of the player where their cursor is pointing. Whenever this ability is used or the clone is killed, the in-game chat will falsely announce that the respective player has left the game. This isn't game breaking in itself, but, from my experience, it causes a chain reaction where another player leaves because that person was their server player. And that repeats a few times, or the other players get demoralized and subsequently leave. Similarly I've seen many people seeing one person leave the game and deciding to restart the whole session.

If you're the Time player, warn the others about this bug before you use the clone ability for whatever reason, in order to stop a possible mass exodus from happening.
GUARDIAN DIDN'T DROP THE DISC? SERVER PLAYER LEFT? STUCK IN THE VOID? USE CHEATS
Going off the mass exodus principle stated above, don't leave the game if you're struck by an inconvenience that can be solved with cheats. It's OK to use the cheats in this game, as the game has provided them to you and allows you to use them by simply typing them in the chat. Given the "super stable" state the game is in, you can simply consider them "debug tools".

IF YOUR GUARDIAN DIDN'T DROP A SBURB DISC: /item CD000000 (six zeros). Alternatively, the "John" house has a Sburb Disc lying on the floor in the corner of the kitchen UPDATE: JOHN'S HOUSE NO LONGER HAS A SBURB DISC LYING IN THE KITCHEN. :(

IF YOUR SERVER PLAYER LEFT: /build. This command allows you to edit the house of the land you are currently in. (aka your own, if you haven't entered the game and gone to another planet). Alternatively, if you've already entered the game, but you don't have access to the first gate above your house, you can simply jump off the cliff and right click right before you hit the ground to negate most of the fall damage. If you're not the host, simply jumping off will suffice, as your HP will simply go into the negatives after you land, and go back to full once you've taken additional damage.

IF YOU ARE STUCK IN THE VOID (a grey room): /home OR /homer. Sometimes you might also clip out of a dungeon and fall into the "void", in which case you will die if you fall low enough. If you don't want to lose the stuff in your sylladex or unequipped weapons in your strife specibus, quickly run this command. /home will take you back to the start of the dungeon.
THIS GUIDE IS BEING PERPETUALLY WORKED ON
I have published this guide with the fatal bugs that I know most vividly. There are definitely more that I can't remember currently, haven't experimented with or didn't find out about. As I find more of these, I will add them here. If you know any bugs that repeatedly break the game, put them in the comments of this guide along with how to replicate them.
BUG REPORT HALL OF FAME

Recipe Softlocks Game

"When I try to && Apple Juice and a Katana, the cruxite will disappear, won't create anything, and my character is unable to attack anymore. Sometimes the sprite will be facing backwards and no longer turn around as well. Tried this multiple times and it happens every time. Adding another cruxtite wont produce anything either"

Eating a hoodie crashes Genesis Project

"Combining a cake with a colored bandana created a Crockercorp hoodie that was edible. Eating said hoodie crashed the player's session."

Eating certain food items while fighting the lich queen causes disconnect

"Happens in multiplayer when you're not the host. First happened when I tried to eat a broccoli while fighting the lich queen and I immediately lost connection. This time I tried to eat a can of soup and the same thing happened."

https://bugs.sburb.me/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=44

Yeah I tp'd to the other land and I got ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mobed by imps so hard my game crashed

"I just Tp'd to my server's land via teleporter on mine"

exiting build mode disappears the house

twice now while using the house creator i've exited the build mode and the entire house vanishes and i can't reopen build mode or open the pause menu.

ABILITY BUGS
The Doom aspect in this game has been aptly named for a long time, as the abilities that come with it cause the desync bug to happen when used. The "JUDGEMENT" ability does this about 50% of the time.

The same thing can happen when using the Space aspect's PUSH and Abjure at the same time:
https://bugs.sburb.me/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=433
Bug 433 - Push + Abjure Softlock
"Playing a Witch of Space run. Turns out if you managed to abjure or whatever it's called where you block damage RIGHT after using Push (E), you get softlocked and can't use any moves ever until you leave and rejoin."

The Bard of Life's passive ability can no longer be used after it kills an enemy.
https://bugs.sburb.me/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=517
Bug 517 - Bard of Life passive breaks when it kills something
"When the Bard of Life's passive ability kills a strife enemy, this removes it from the strife, which leads to the following exception:

InvalidOperationException: Collection was modified; enumeration operation may not execute.

The result of this is that the passive stops working entirely."
(PATCHED) DON'T USE GATES TO GO TO OTHER LANDS (DESYNC)
As of "Major Patch 0.5.2", gates seem to work correctly for non-host players. The transportalizer trick is still very useful, though. If you want to go right to the land of a player who isn't your server or client, you can use the transportalizer.

Eventually you'll want to go to another player's land/planet. You can find gates on your own land that will take you to your server player's land, marked green on the map and shaped like the spirograph of the Sburb Disc. There is also the second gate above your house, which will take you to your client player's land.

9 times out of 10, going through them will cause the desync bug to happen.

To travel between lands you can use transportalizers instead.

You can find these structures on your land. Walking up on them will open the map of your land, and you can click on another transportalizer on the map to teleport yourself to it.

When on the transportalizer, you can press the arrow on the top left corner of the map to show all the planets. Afterwards, click on the land you want to travel to, and click on a transportalizer on its map to teleport there. The only caveat is that the land's player has to pass by one to reveal it on the map, as with any structure.
(PATCHED) DON'T EAT WHILE IN DUNGEONS
UPDATE: As of "Major Patch 0.5.2" this has allegedly been patched, as it is mentioned directly in the patch notes.

If you are not the host of a session, eating any consumable item while in a dungeon puts you at a very high risk of getting disconnected from the game. This is guaranteed to happen if you eat during the Lich Queen boss fight.

"i ate a broccoli and lost connection"
"...that happened to me once irl"
(PATCHED) NO DUPLICATE CLASSES OR ASPECTS
UPDATE: As of "Major Patch 0.5.2", this has allegedly been fixed, as it is mentioned directly in the patch notes. You can can also disallow duplicate aspects, classes, AND classpects now, if you still want to be cautious about this.

Nowadays, the "Allow duplicate classes" check in the lobby menu, which is OFF by default, doesn't really work and the host can start the session regardless if there are players with dupe classes or not. But the checkbox is there for a reason, and the reason is: IF TWO OR MORE PLAYERS HAVE THE SAME CLASS (OR ASPECT FOR THAT MATTER), THE SESSION IS VERY LIKELY TO NOT START, OR A BUNCH OF (IF NOT ALL) PLAYERS WILL LOSE CONNECTION TO THE SERVER BEFORE EVEN LOADING IN. If you manage to survive these, though, duplicate aspects will cause some of the players in the session to be unable to enter Sburb.

If you share a class or aspect with another player, just change it. Trying out different classpects is one of the few engaging parts of this game anyway.

It's too bad the devs made it so the sburb disc cheat doesnt work anymore, it just spawns an internal error cube
