Project 11560 USSR

In the late 1970s, the Soviet Navy introduced two new types of destroyers; the Udaloy class with anti-submarine weapons and the Sovrenmenny class carrying anti-submarine weapons. This decision to build two types of ships with two separate roles was a result of Soviet weapons and sensors at the time being excessively bulky. The Navy designers had hoped that once newer technologies emerged, it would be possible to build a reasonably compact multipurpose warship carrying both ASW and anti-ship weapons, as well as better anti-air systems than either the Sovrenmenny or the Udaloy.

Chief designer V.P. Mishin first proposed the Project 1156 concept. This was to be a lengthened Udaloy hull with the addition of S-300F Fort surface-to-air missiles and RPK-6 Vodopad anti-submarine missiles launched from 533mm torpedo tubes. By 1985, this was further upgraded and enlarged into Project 11560, reaching 190m in length and 11,000-ton in displacement. The old P-270 anti-ship missiles in quadruple launchers were to be replaced by the upcoming VLS-launched P-800 Onyx, then the obsolete AK-630 CIWS replaced by the Kashtan/Kortik system. A hangar for two Ka-27 helicopters, similar to those found on the Slava class cruisers, were also fitted.

By this time, Project 11560 had little in common with the original intention of being a compact, affordable Udaloy/Sovrenmenny class replacement, instead it was slated as a new multirole cruiser to replace the Slava class. The inclusion of various new, high-tech components, however, meant that 11560 was constantly delayed, until the collapse of the Soviet Union ended any prospects of the ship entering service.
