Sola Busca Tarot

Engraved onto metal in 1490 and hand-painted in 1491, the Sola Busca deck is the oldest surviving example of a 78 card tarot deck that uses iconic tarot symbolism. It acquired its name from the family who owned the deck until it was eventually sold to the Brera Museum in Milan for €800,000.

Before being sold, the Sola Busca family shared photographic prints with the British Museum in 1907, it is believed this is where A. E. Waite or Pamela Coleman Smith became inspired to create the Rider-Waite Tarot.

Although the only painted deck containing 78 cards resides in Milan, 35 other unpainted cards are also known to exist. The Albertina museum owns 23, the British museum owns 4, and 4 others are located in Hamburg and Paris.

Research has revealed that the deck may have been authored by Mattia Serrati da Cosandola, who crafted the deck for a wealthy Venetian client. Many inscriptions on the original cards reveal association with the Republic of Venice.
