🏆 Metal Gear Solid Achievement Guide
Von JIN
Welcome to the Metal Gear Solid Achievement guide!

The majority of this Achievement list is tied to story events. You come to all of the bosses as part of the story.

However, this cannot be done in a single playthrough. The Bandana and Stealth are given to you at the very end of the story. You can only get one of them per play-through though.

You will have to make a choice around the middle of the game that will impact which item you are given.

You are also going to need to earn one of the two highest codenames in the game. This is going to require it own playthrough as it has to be done in a certain way.

Play through the game the first time earning everything except for “Elite.” You’ll be able to learn the controls and the game. After you get everything else, then go for your “Elite” play through.

Introduction

● 8/10 Estimated Difficulty OR 5/10 with a workaround
● 25 – 35 Estimated Hours to Completion – Skill and VR Missions Dependent.
● 2 1/2 Minimum Playthroughs – 1 1/2 is possible, but 3 1/2 recommended
● 4 Missable Trophies/Achievements
Information
  • Ocelot’s Torture

After fighting Sniper Wolf for the first time, Snake will be captured and tortured. During the torture, you will need to either resist, or submit to the torture.

Submitting to the torture will give you the stealth camouflage at the end of the game.

Resisting the torture will give you the bandana at the end of the game.

If you don’t want to play through the game a second time, go ahead and make a separate save file after beating Sniper Wolf the first time. That way, you can continue from about halfway through the game and make the opposite choice of your initial play-through to get the other item you need. You will still need to play through the rest of the game after that, but you will be starting about halfway through opposed to the very beginning.

  • Fox and Big Boss Codenames
You will be required to earn either the Fox or Big Boss codename. You only need one of them, not both.

Codenames are basically a score given to you at the end of your playthrough.

These code names are tied to difficulties. Fox is earned on hard and Big Boss is earned on Extreme.

Again, you only need one of these. So you can stick to hard and avoid having to play on extreme.

Save this for its own play through.

  • Easier Options Codename Options
You can use the Bandana/Stealth, but you will need to have beaten the game on Hard first. So, you can actually beat the game on Hard with any score, earn the special item you want, start a new game on that file on Hard and then go for the Fox codename.
You can make this even easier by playing through the Japanese version of the game. The only difficulty option available on the JP version of the game is Easy. You can play the JP version on Easy and still earn the Fox codename by meeting the score requirements.

vs. Revolver Ocelot
Defeat Revolver Ocelot

Ocelot will be running around the room shooting at you. You need to chase him and shoot him. Do not cross through middle of the room. Doing so will trip the explosives which will kill Baker and fail the fight.

If you hit Ocelot, don’t keep firing. You wont be able to continuously damage him with multiple shots. You can’t damage him again until his character model stops flashing. So save your ammo. Shoot him and then continue to run after him. If he runs clockwise, you run counter clockwise (and vice versa) to cut him off.

vs. M1 Tank
Defeat M1 Tank

All you have to do here is get near the tank and throw Grenades at the Gunner. If you throw one close enough, the Grenade will go into the seat of the Gunner and do a big chunk of damage. When he flies out of the seat, another soldier will take his place. Just do the same thing with Grenades again.

You’ll need to be quick to avoid being run over by the Tank. If you can stay close enough to it, it won’t be able to use the cannon as it won’t have the required range. You’ll only need to worry about avoiding the gunfire and being run over.

vs. Ninja
Defeat the Ninja

This fight will be broken up into a few phases.

First, he’ll be near you with his sword out. Two kick melee combos will be enough to end this phase. He’ll put away his sword.

The next phase will be the longest one. When he gets near you, he’ll combo some lunging kicks together. As he kicks, he’ll be moving toward you.

So, keep moving and get out of his way. If you’re quick, you can land a combo of your own on him after he finishes his kick attack. If you get too close while he is still moving, you’ll take damage.

Every now and then, he’ll mix in a jump attack. He will jump up inn the air and hang for just a quick second and then come straight down. There will be a shockwave where he lands, so makes to get out of the way. You can land a combo on him when he lands.

After this phase, he’ll use his stealth camo. This makes him somewhat invisible. He won’t come after you, instead, he’ll be standing still somewhere in the room and you’ll need to find him.

It is possible to see him normally as the area becomes distorted, but you can use your Thermal Goggles to instantly spot him. When you do see him, run up to him and land a combo.

After this phase, he’ll slowly walk toward you. As you get close, he’ll very quickly disappear and then reappear throwing a punch. Get close to him to bait him into throwing a punch and run away from him. After the throws the punch, there will be a window where you can hit him with a combo.

The final phase will work a little differently. He will be surrounded by an electronic sphere. He won’t come after you, but the sphere will pulse which will damage you if you’re too close. So for this, just go ahead and use your Fa-mas to finish him off from a distance.

vs. Psycho Mantis
Defeat Psycho Mantis

In the original version of Metal Gear Solid, you would have to unplug your controller and plug it into the second controller port.

Obviously, that cannot be done on modern consoles. The Master Collection does however come with a built in digital controller system.

In order to beat Psycho Mantis, you’re going to have to use the digital controller port system to switch over to the second port. This will prevent Psycho Mantis from “reading your mind.” He’ll dodge your attack every time you try to hit him if you don’t switch ports.

With that out of the way, it’ll be time to actually fight him.

His attacks are easily avoided just by moving out of the way. When he uses stealth, you can use Thermal Goggles to track and follow him.

When he takes enough damage, he’ll start levitating things around the room. Lay down prone to avoid the objects he throws at you.

vs. Sniper Wolf
Defeat Sniper Wolf

As you enter the battle, quickly run to the left or right side and take cover. Lean up against the wall to get a view of where Sniper Wolf is.

The mines from earlier will be gone, so you don’t have to worry about those. You also cannot go too far down the hallway. You need to stay back near the entrance.

When she takes cover behind the pillar, equip the PSG-1 and you’ll automatically go prone. Quickly take Diazepam.

With the item window open, highlight the Diazepam press / to take some. Only press it once to take one. Take another when your aim is shaky. Just equipping it will not do anything.

Quickly look up to the pillar where Sniper Wolf took cover and wait for her to peek out. When she does, shoot her. You’ll only do damage with one shot, so don’t waste your ammo.

All you can do here is follow her. She’ll change positions back and forth across the walkway. Don’t waste ammo shooting at her while she runs. Wait for her to stop and take a position to shoot her.

There is PSG-1 ammo on both sides of the area if you need more.

vs. Hind D
Defeat the Hind D Chopper

During the fight, pop out and hit the Hind with a Stinger missile. Quickly take cover in between the buildings.

Keep your reticle on the helicopter and wait for it to come into view. The Stinger will target the Hind through walls, so keep it locked on in order to know where it is.

When it comes into view, fire a shot.

Repeat this until the next phase of the fight.

The second phase is not much different than the first. The difference here is that the Hind will dip down a bit. Keep your Stinger locked on him and wait for him to fly back up. Shoot him when he is in view.

There will be two times during the fight where he shoots a missile at you. Just stay between the two buildings and you’ll be safe from them.

There is a Ration and Stinger ammo nearby. If you need them, wait for the Hind to drop down before trying to get them.

vs. Sniper Wolf (Rematch)
Win the second fight against Sniper Wolf

The snowfield is a big area, so keep her in your sights as she moves from position to position. Shoot her as she takes aim at you.

Follow her back and forth shooting her as she steps out from behind cover.

If you have Diazepam, make sure to use it.

If you’re struggling here, it is possible to cheese this fight using the Nikita launcher.

Go over to the far right side and get behind the snowy hill and equip the Nikita.

Fire a missile and then go into first person view in the missile. Guide it over to where Wolf is and you can hit her with it. She won’t be able to hit you and you can just send missiles over at her.

When using them, you’ll need to shoot the missile up a gradual incline to reach her. It’ll explode if it hits a snow wall, but there is a gradual hill on the left you can use to get the missile up.

Guide it over the area marked below and the missile will rise up with the ground level. This is on the left side near Wolf in front of the parked truck.

vs. Vulcan Raven
Defeat Vulcan Raven

The fight against Raven is very easy. He’s going to run around a big area. He won’t even be following you. He’ll just be randomly running up and down the hallways of the area.

If he sees you, he’ll shoot at you so just stay out his line of sight and you’ll be fine.

You can use a wide variety of weapons to deal with him.

  • Nikita
  • Stinger
  • C4
  • Claymore Mines

There will be two phases to this fight.

Raven will be slow during the first. He’ll stop to shoot down hallways. When he stops, this is your opportunity to shoot him with a Nikita missile or Stinger missile from behind. Do not get too close or he’ll turn around and shoot you.

He will run much faster during the second phase of the fight. This will give you less time to line a shot from behind him.

Make use of Mines and C4 for the second phase. Place them and wait for him to run near them. If it’s C4, detonate it as he’s over it. If it’s a Mine, he’ll step on it and blow it up.

vs. Metal Gear Rex
Defeat Metal Gear Rex

To start, throw a Chaff Grenade. Then, pull out the Stinger and target the ray dome on the the side.

Immediately run away and drop another Chaff Grenade. Rex will shoot three missiles at you. They are basically impossible to outrun without Chaff.

When a Chaff Grenade is active, the missiles will be shot at where you were standing the last time you inflicted damage to Rex.

So, throw a Chaff Grenade, shoot him with the Stinger, run away, throw a Chaff Grenade, shoot him with the Stinger, run away. Repeat those steps until the health bar is depleted.

There are Chaff Grenades on the right side near where you start the fight.

For the second phase, you’re going to be shooting at the mouth where Liquid is sitting.

The best way to take on this phase is to throw a Stun Grenade as soon as the battle starts and run directly at him.

Avoid the laser attack and watch out for his stomp. The stomp attack is one hit kill, but he will only do it if you’re out in front of him.

You want to stay behind him but between the legs. Use the Stinger to shoot the under side of the cockpit. It doesn’t have to be locked on the do damage.

When you shoot him, he’ll know where you are, so just keep running toward the back of him. If he backs up, run toward him. Stay between the legs to the back.

He’ll eventually lose sight and give you another opportunity to hit him with the Stinger.

Repeat that until Rex is destroyed.

vs. Liquid Snake
Defeat Liquid Snake

You’ll be fist fighting Liquid on top of Rex. You will only be allowed to use your melee attacks. There is also a timer in this fight, so you have to be quick.

The hitboxes in this fight are tough. You need to really get away from Liquid when he attacks, other wise he’ll hit you and do a lot of damage.

From the start, run up to him and get a punch, punch, kick attack on him.

You’ll be able to squeeze in 2 or 3 of these before he starts going on the offensive.

There are a few things to look out for here.

If you fall over the edge, quickly tap Up on the D-Pad to pull yourself back up.

When Liquid puts his hands up, he’s about to attack. Get in close and then back away. He’ll do a punch combo or kick. If you attack him while his hands are up, he’ll duck and counter attack.

Get in close, back out and then attack him after he misses his attack.

As you do more damage, he’ll become more aggressive. He’ll put his hands up and circle you. When he does this, move in and hit him with a single punch and then back away.

After your punch, he’ll immediately throw a two punch combo or a kick. Back away so that he misses. He’ll be vulnerable after he misses.

His other attack will be a charge. He’ll put his head down and run toward you. The hitbox for this is very cheap. Do your best to get out of his path.

You won’t be able to interrupt his combos with your attacks, but you can stop him by throwing him.

If you run up to him and press Left or Right on the D-Pad while pressing / , you’ll actually roll him over. This won’t do damage, but it will interrupt his attacks, including the charge if you can get to him before he runs. When he bends down, you can roll him. You won’t have a lot of time to do it, but it is possible if you’re close enough.

When he’s about to run out of health, you need to land a punch, punch, kick combo on him near the edge so that he is kicked off of Metal Gear Rex.

If you don’t kick him off of Rex, he will regain a little bit of health. The final hit needs to be a kick and he needs to go over the edge.

Decked Out
Obtain the Bandana

After beating Sniper Wolf for the first time, make a new save file before proceeding. When you approach the door at the end of the hallway, you’ll be captured and tortured by Ocelot.

  • In order to obtain the Stealth Camo, you will have to submit to the torture. Upon completing the game, you will be given the Stealth Camo. You’ll be able to use that on your next play-through. This will make Snake completely invisible to enemy soldiers. It will not work against bosses.
  • In order to obtain the Bandana, you will need to pass the torture. As Ocelot is shocking you, you have to repeatedly tap / in order to gain health back. Upon completing the game, you will be given the Bandana. You’ll be able to use that on your next play-through. This will give you infinite ammo while it is equipped. It can be used against bosses.
After you’ve beaten the game, load the separate save you made and continue from there. When you get to the torture, make the opposite decision of what you did the first time and then complete the rest of the game.

Elite
Obtain the Fox or Big Boss codename

Fox and Big Boss are scores given after the game based on your playthrough statistics.

The conditions for Fox and Big Boss are the same, except for what difficulty you play on.

Fox is earned on hard and Big Boss is earned on extreme. Fortunately, you only need to earn one of these. Not both. So the easier option of the two is to play on hard.

  • Time – 3 hours or less.
  • Kills – 25 or fewer
  • Rations Used – 1 or fewer
  • Continues – 0
  • Alerts – 4 or fewer

Unlike the other games in the series, there is no option to knock out enemies non lethally. So you’re going to to have to just get through the game avoiding enemies all together.

Save this for your last playthrough so that you are familiar with the game’s layout, objectives and controls.

The save limit is 80, so you can save basically as often as you like.

If you die, you have to exit and re-load your save. Do not hit “Continue.” It’s not the death that’ll ruin your run, it’s choosing to continue. So if anything happens, you need to back out to the main menu and load your save.

Easier Options

  • You can use the Bandana/Stealth, but you will need to have beaten the game on Hard first. So, you can actually beat the game on Hard, earn the special item you want, start a new game on that file on Hard and then go for the Fox codename.
  • You can make this even easier by playing through the Japanese version of the game. The only difficulty option available on the JP version of the game is Easy. You can play the JP version on Easy and still earn the score requirements to earn the Fox codename.

Ghostly Encounter
Exorcise a ghost’s picture

Before you can get a picture of a ghost, you’re going to need first get the camera.

You can pick the camera up after you escape the cell after the torture. Take the elevator to B2.

Go down to the bottom and enter the door that leads to where you fought Ocelot earlier on in the game.

Go through the hole in the wall you blasted earlier. Go to the right and put C4 on the wall. Blow it to reveal a hidden room.

Before entering that hole in the wall, throw a Chaff Grenade. When it explodes, run in and go up to the top right.

There are two doors in here. A Lv. 4 and Lv. 6. Enter the Lv. 4 door to find the Camera.

You’re going to want to be throwing Chaff Grenades regularly as there are a lot of gun cameras in here. Toss one before the active one wears off.

Now that you have the camera, it’s time to find a ghost.

In order to continue the story, you’re going to have to back track through the room you fought Psycho Mantis in. Before getting to that room. Go into the woman’s bathroom where you met Meryl earlier.

Equip the camera and take a picture of the mirrors above the sinks.

Once you have taken the picture, back out to the main menu and then select, Special > Album > load your save file and select your picture.

With the picture up, select “Exorcise.”

I could not enter woman’s bathroom for "Ghostly Encounter" after torture escape. The door just stay closed. Took photo of poster with mechs in north-east corner of lab, where Ninja fight happened. Just one floor below.

Anyway nice guide, m8. Thx for helpful tips.

My memory might be hazy but if you beat the game on any difficulty, a new game+ save file is created for that difficulty only. That's why you'd have to beat the game on hard first if you want to use the bandana/stealth on hard.
Tricky 12. Nov. 2024 um 0:57
So will I need to beat the game on hard twice (as I'll save halfway through) to obtain the bandana / stealth? Or can you change the difficulty in game? How do I play through the 'Japanese version of the game' on easy to get Elite?

I've heard that Xbox and PSN users have been able to get the Elite achievement by completing the game in the french version and then loading a NG+ on that save, can anyone confirm if that's also the case on Steam?
