Note:
This is not a completed guide. I will add more as I get further into the game, and include screenshots and abilities of the characters.
Stage Unlocks
All of the characters in this section can only be unlocked if found in a stage and rescued. Once you find them, you have to act quick or something will kill them, if that happens, you need to restart the level or rewind back a few seconds if you think you can get them fast enough.
Zackasaurus
Zackasaurus is found in 1,000,000 BC stage in level 1.You'll encounter him spray-painting a word on some dinosaur eggs. Before you reach him, some of the eggs crack and you can kill them off (They won't kill Zackasaurus), if you take too long to touch Zack, the mother Dinosaur will come out and kill him, meaning you'll have to restart the level or rewind and try to reach him faster.
Abilities:
Normal attack: A simple bite, doesn't reach far.
Charge attack: Shoots a ball of goop. It lingers on the floor for a short time and can still hit enemies if they walk over it.
Merlin
Merlin is found in the 673 stage in level 1. Merlin is a bit more hidden then Zackasaurus in that you need to go out of your way to find him. In a certain part of the level you will have to climb a ladder in order to continue through the stage, but if you defeat the 2 guards blocking the gate to the right of the ladder and continue through that, you will come across Merlin about to be executed. If you kill the executioner fast enough, you can recruit Merlin.

Abilities:
Normal Attack: A small spark, hits medium ranged targets.
Charged attack: Merlin releases a large blue ball of magic to hit his enemy, hits enemies at a medium range and also lingers for about 2-3 seconds.
Weapon of Choice: Staff
Dolphin Lundgren
Dolphin Lundgren is found in level 2 of the 9600 BC stage. When you reach the log waterfall, go down and then right to find a shack called 'Dolph Dogz', break through the door before the staff member lowers Lundgren into the meat grinder to save him.

Abilities:
Normal attack: Shoots a sound wave at enemies, is very weak and only hits at short range.
Charged attack: Shoots a round from his Machine gun, hits long range and does moderate damage. You should try to use this as much as possible when playing as Lundgren.
Weapon of choice: Machine Gun

Melaine Gibson
Melaine is found in stage 2 of the 199X level. She can be found under a wooden bridge leading to a pile of explosive barrels. Go under the wooden bridge and you'll find her tied up being lowered into a pack of evil/mutant pigs. Kill or the pigs and touch Melaine to free her.

Abilities:
Normal attack: Shoots a medium ranged shotgun shot. Moderate damage.
Charge shot: Shoots a slightly longer ranged, bigger shotgun shot. Large damage.
Tips:
Melaine is best used against a combonation of grounded and hovering enemies, as her shotgun shots can attack enemies that are slightly trickier to take out.
Cleo
Cleo is one of the characters that you will be given without having to find them hidden around the level. You unlock her after completing the final level in 199X.

Abilities:
Normal attack: summons a boomerang that circles around Cleo, walking into an enemy with the boomerang surrounding you hurts the enemy. You can summon more than one boomerang at once. It can also stop some projectiles (not bullets).
Charged attack: Throws all of your summoned boomerangs in the direction you aimed.
Tips: Cleo is best used in a level with less gun-wielding enemies, as her boomerang shield can't destroy bullets, but can destroy anything else, including enemies. It's best to ram grounded enemies with a large boomerang shield, and use the charged attack on air-based enemies.
Lou Don Jim
Lou Don Jim is found in stage one of year 3072. You will find him underneath 2 blue hatches just past 3 fire turrets, when you find him, he will be watching TV. You'll need to destroy the TV and touch him before Samara from The Ring scares him to death/kills him.

Abilities:
Normal attack: Swings his light sword (lightsaber). Melee range, high damage.
Charged attack: Throws his light sword like a boomerang, which then returns to him. Long range, high damage.
Tips: Lou Don is a very well-rounded class, as throwing his light sword can kill normal long range enemies very easily.
Commander Repeatski
Commander Repeatski is unlocked when you begin the final Dr. Infinity level.

Abilities:
Normal attack: Repeatski does a single punch. Melee range. Decent damage.
Charged attack: Repeatski creates a rainbow laser using his medals. Long range. Decent damage. Can be aimed up and down(very slowly) but can leave you vulnerable.

Glorb and Shard Unlocks
These characters can only be obtained by collecting a certain percentage of Glorb or Shard badges. Glorbs and Shard badges can be awarded if you collect all of the shards or glorbs in a level.
Squirty Harry
Squirty Harry is unlocked when you collect 50% of the shards in the game.

Abilities:
Normal attack: Harry fires a shot from his gun. Medium range. Low damage.
Charged attack: Harry farts, propelling him a short distance. Medium range. Moderate Damage.
Da Vinci
Da Vinci is unlocked after collecting 100% of the shards in the game.

Abilities:
Normal attack: Fires a crossbow arrow. Medium Range. Moderate Damage. Is Affected by Gravity.
Charged attack: Summons an auto rapid-firing crossbow turret facing the direction your looking. Long Range. Moderate Damage. Unaffected by Gravity.

Stash
Stash is unlocked after collecting 50% of Glorbs in the game.

Abilities:
Normal attack: Stash slashes his chainsaw in front of him. Melee range. Large damage.
Charged attack: Fires out a double barrel shotgun blast. Medium Range. Moderate damage.
Re-Bot
Re-Bot is unlocked by collecting 100% of Glorbs in the game.

Abilities:
Normal attack: Fires a 3 round burst of bullets. Unknown Range. Unknown Damage.
Charged attack: Fires 4 missiles that home in on enemies. Unknown Range. Unknown Damage.
PC Exclusive Valve Characters
These characters are only included in this version of STFU, and are unlocked by collecting either shards or glorbs.
Saxton Hale
Saxton Hale is unlocked when you collect 25% of Shards in the game.

Abilities:
Normal attack: Simple punch. Melee range. Somewhat high damage.
Charged attack: Saxton lunges in the direction you aim, and fires a rapid array of punches. Medium range. High damage.
Tips: Saxton can deal a very large amount of damage, which can easily destroy bosses by spamming Saxtons charged attacks. If a Saxton dies, spawn another one in and combine the current Saxtons charged attack with the previous ones.
Zoey
Zoey is unlocked by collecting 10% of Glorbs in the game.

Abilities:
Normal attack: Zoey fires a shot from one of her dual pistols. Can be fired rapidly. Moderate damage. Moderate range.
Charged attack: Zoey throws a propane tank that explodes after about 1-3 seconds. Moderate range. High damage.
Pyro
Pyro is unlocked after collecting 25% of Glorbs in the game.

Abilities:
Normal attack: Pyro fires a flare out of his gun.
Special attack: Pyro fires his flamethrower for about 5 seconds.
Tip: Pyro is best for clearing out hordes of enemies using his flamethrower, and when precise aiming with the flare gun is too hard. Pyro's flamethrower probably shines best during the final computer boss battle against the brain, as the error squares die to the flames very easily, allowing you to clear a large space quickly.
Looker's Time Trials
The following character is only obtained through collecting Looker Shards.
Looker
Looker is unlocked when you collect all of the looker shards in the game. To do this, you must first make your way to almost the end of the stage. You'll see a looker shard, but to obtain it you need to grab it, rewind to the beginning of the stage and then get back to that looker shard in a predetermined amount of time which will be shown underneath your glorb and shard count.

Abilities:
Normal attack:Fires bullets that do no damage but create lockons on surfaces and enemies. No damage. Unknown range.
Charged attack:Fires lasers that home in on the lockons and explode. Unknown damage. Long range.

Looker is definitely the hardest character to unlock, as you need to complete each stage in usually less than 60 or 40 seconds.
To end off...
If you have anything you want me to add, remove, change, or any extra information about any of the characters you have, please do tell me. This is my first guide so I'll take any suggestions to make it better. I hope this helped you, and goodbye!

So sad for me to just find out this way the PC version got exclusive characters, R.I.P. the fact that I go it on console not so long ago.

I have something to say, anybody who even still plays this game to this day (Like me) I have a tip for the Looker. You don't have to collect it then rewind back to get it all over again. You just have to be fast enough. If you are fast enough the Looker should NOT look like a jumbled mess. It should look like the image above. (P.S the way I got it was using the ultra version of the characters, that may be cheating but it worked for me. If you want to know how to get them a short answer is you need to beat Dr. Infinity.)

Just found out something about Squirty Harry's farts... They EXPLODE when shot at with his revolver. As gross as he is, this can be a game changer

"Once you find them, you have to act quick or something will kill them, if that happens, you need to restart the level to get them." You don't have to restart, you can just timeout.

You should add that the badges you get from completing the Helladeck count towards glorb character unlocks.

I'd actually like the real numbers. Could you manage that?
