Easy Souce farming with Yuffie :D
By iceicewater
This is probably the best way to bump your characters' stats all the way to 255.

Since the W-item Duplication trick no longer works on duplicating sources if your FF7 is patched, this is the best, easiest, and fastest way to gather sources.

Intro
Yuffie is one of my favorite characters in the game.
In this guide, I'll share with you guys how to take advantage of her ultimate weapon - The Conformer + Morph Command.

As you guys would know, Morph actually makes your attacks less...deadly. You deal 1/8 of your normal attack, and if that attack leads to a killing blow, a monster may be morphed into an item. But not all monsters can be morphed!

How does the Conformer come into play here?
Yuffie's Conformer does not suffer any damage penalty from Morph command. However, if you attack your allies or yourself, you'll do 1 damage. You could morph a monster in just one hit.
The Conformer does more damage depending on your opponents level. Some Unknowns in the Sunken Gelnika would receive a 9999 damage from the conformer.

The W-Item Duplication Trick still works on items used in battle, but it no longer works on duplicating sources during battle. I've tried this different ways, it just doesn't.

Now, onto the next part!
Guideliines
First and foremost, you need to get to Disc 3 for the Mega-All materia.
By this time of course, you'd already have access to the Shinra Submarine in Junon.

Things you will need for Yuffie
  • Yuffie's ultimate weapon - The Conformer
  • 3x Sneak Attack Materia (Preferably Mastered)
  • 3x Morph Materia (Doesn't have to be Mastered)
  • Mega-All Materia (Doesn't have to be Mastered)
  • 1x Ribbon

The Conformer
- Can be found at the Sunken Gelnika and this is also the place where we will start farming sources!

Morph Materia
- Can be acquired in your play through of the Temple of the Ancients. This is the only way to get one, meaning, if you want to have more, you'll have to master it. In this guide, you should master it twice so you can equip 3.

Mega-All Materia
- Can be acquired in the Northern Crater (Disc 3), on the path where the party splits, choose the left path, then the lower path.

Mega-All affects commands and spells, and also equips your character with the Slash-All command. It works in the same way as All Materia but it doesn't have to be linked to any materia in order to work.

Ribbon
The Unknowns and Serpent sometimes counter-attack and some of those could give you negative status effects which could hinder your progress in grinding.

Some things you should consider but are otherwise, unnecessary
  • 2x Enemy Lure Materia (Preferably Mastered)
  • 2x Pre-Emptive Materia (Preferably Mastered)
  • 3x Rune Armlet Equipped on all party members
  • Get Cid in your party and equip his Scimitar
  • Equip Cloud with his Apocalypse

Why only 2x Enemy Lure and 2x Pre-Emptive Materia?
Any additional materia of these two would yield the same effect and therefore would be useless.
Pre-Emptive by the way, gives automatic critical hits against your opponents if it manages to trigger at the start of battle.

Rune Armlet gives you Double materia growth!

Cid's Scimitar and Cloud's Apocalypse gives Tripple Materia growth!

So with all that said, you could start leveling up some Summon Materia with this, or All Materia and Comet Materia which you could sell these two for 1,400,000 Gil Each if you're after that Master of Gil Achievement.
Mechanics
Equip your Materias this way on Yuffie.
'=' means linked.

(Sneak Attack)=(Morph)
(Sneak Attack)=(Morph)
(Sneak Attack)=(Morph)
Mega-All
Pre-Emptive*

*Not necessary but would make things a lot easier.

It doesn't matter if you put the materia on Yuffie's Weapon or Armor as long as they are linked correctly.

Now, you setup whatever equipment, personnel, materia configuration you want.
Go to the Sunken Gelnika, save first, run around the rooms and watch the magic happen.

With the Pre-Emptive Materia, If done correctly, Yuffie will attack first before any of the time bars fill up (This will happen 99% of the time if you've mastered all of the 3 Sneak Attack Materias. Why 99%? - this one time I played, it didn't. haha)

Sometimes, Yuffie will attack twice! and even if you've found yourself in a 'No Escape' situation, Yuffie will hit both sides.

If you don't have any Pre-Emptive materia equipped at all it would require you to select actions which can make grinding more grindy. Pre-Emptive just makes everything a lot easier.

ROOMS!
The room at the end of the corridor will let you encounter Bad Raps (Squiddies) and Poodlers (Horrizontal hairy squiddies)
Bad Rap gives you Luck Source when morphed.
Poodler gives you Speed Source

Enemies on other rooms and what they yield
  • Unknown (Pink colorful smiley guy) - Power Source
  • Unknown 2 (Flower tounge guy) - Guard Source
  • Unknown 3 (Bat, creepy hugs guy) - Magic Source
  • Serpent (The enemy of the dolphins) - Mind Source

It doesn't take long to max out Luck and Dexterity, but maxing out the other stats to 255 would take longer, that's why it's good to equip some items that give double and tripple AP. This way, you'd be farming Sources and AP better.
Random Facts with Morph and Stats
More morphable enemies that yield very useful stuff during the Northern Crater part (Disc 3!)
  • Master Tonberry and Ho-Chu - Ribbon
  • Armored Golem - Guard Source
  • Parasite - Remedy
  • Dark Dragon - Remedy
  • Heavy Tank (Gongaga Village) - Power Source

*You can still find Ho-Chu in the Goldern Saucer Battle square, I got my Ribbons from morphing him.

Here's how the stats affect your characters
  • Power Source influences Strength which is the attack power your character deals. Maximum attack could let you give 9999 damage to an opponent provided that there are no damage penalties
  • Speed Source affects Dexterity, the higher this value, the faster your time bar fills up, you could attack twice in a round compared to your other characters.
  • Guard Source increases vitality, which is not hit points in this game. The higher the value, the more damage you can absorb.
  • Mind Source raises Spirit. There's something wrong in this game that has not been addressed until now - your armor, no matter how much it says it gives you to magic defense, doesn't give you any at all (absorb and nullify however, works). The only thing that affects your magic defense is Spirit.
  • Magic Source adds a point to Magic which makes your magic attacks deal more damage, this includes Summons and Enemy Skills you've acquired.
  • Luck helps in how often you 'dodge' your opponent's attacks (i.e., Make them "Miss") and how often you deal critical blows.

Now that all that's said. A good thing is to max out is your Luck statistics first, since most of the time you'll be encountering Bad Rap in the room at the far end of the corridoor. This is a really really good stat, I've dodge a lot of Ultimas from Ruby weapon, and some shots from Emerald weapon. Speed source is next up, if you've managed to max this one out, you won't need haste or Speed Plus Materia to make a move real fast.
W-Item Duplication trick for sources by Kibatu
Part 1
So of course you know how the W-item glitch works in general: You get it equipped, you use the first item, and when using the second item, you pick it and before hitting confirm on the character/enemy, you hit cancel, and it gives you the first item back, and you keep hitting confirm and cancel to keep getting more.

The problem with Sources is that you can't use them in battle, so normal means are out of the window. But as long as you're fighting more than one enemy, you can do it relatively easily.

First, get a disposible item, only one of them, and put it on the top of the item list. (I use a potion since I don't use those at all. XP) Then equip Yuffie with the conformer and a Morph materia. And then equip the w-item on someone else. Now run into a battle with multiple enemies. Have Yuffie use morph on an enemy to change it, and while this is going on, go to W-Item with the other character, use that item on top to make it dissapear, and then wait.

Part 2
There's one more thing to mention before you continue that I forgot to mention: Make sure you do not have the source you're farming for in your inventory. So say if you're morphing the enemy for a luck source, don't have any in your inventory.

Now here's the trick to it. When you use the single item, it clears a spot for it, and while waiting in the screen to choose a second item, Yuffie will have by now morphed the enemy, and the source will have taken that items place. Now guess what? Confirm>Cancel>Confirm>Cancel. You should start seeing the source itself start going up and voila: W-item glitch ensues.

Part 3
Now here's the kicker: The Sunken ship only has multiple enemies for Luck and Speed sources, but what about the other four?

Well, for power sources, if you go to Mt. Nibel and walk around the area outside the reactor, you'll find Screamers.

For Guard sources, you can go to Mideel and encounter Spirals.

Now for Magic and Mind sources, this is where it gets tricky.

If you want to find multiple enemies for Magic, you have to fight the 8-eyes, and they are only in the battle arena or in a fixed fight at the Temple of the Ancients. Since that's not an option, let's talk about the set up for the Battle Arena at the Gold Saucer.

Part 4
Before entering the battle arena, you set up like before, with one of an item up top, Yuffie with conformer and Morph, but have Morph be connected with "Counter" (The blue materia that is specifically called "Counter", not counter attack or magic counter.), and the W-item. I heard you can put the enemy to sleep as well, so try the Seal materia if you want to give it a go.

Now enter the Battle arena and go until the third battle. You have a 1/3 chance to run into 8-eyes here, and if you don't run into them, you can run away and try again. Once you do run into them, wait for one of them to attack you, and if done right, you will counter with Morph.

Have Yuffie use the W-item as normal, wait for the counter to finish, let the source appear and start mashing that Confirm x Cancel combo. If you're fast enough, you can get up to 99 relatively easy, but if you want to be careful, you can get say 60-80 doing it this way.

Part 5
So that's 5 out of 6 sources covered. Cool. Now, the last one, Mind source...... Oh boy, this is probably the biggest pain in the butt for source farming out of anything else, so let me try to explain this as well as I can.

First thing first, set up everything that was already explained as before, w-item, morph, one of an item, no sources in inventory, yada yada. But we need to set up some other stuff as well.

All three characters are required to do this, so let's set it up.

For Yuffie, you need a Final Attack and Morph materia combined in the first paired slots. (The far left one out of the four on the Conformer.)

For Character 2, give him/her the W-item.

And for Character 3, you need two combinations: One full cure and Quadra magic on the far left, and then Full cure and Final Attack. (This is so Final attack + Full cure goes off before Final attack + Morph.)

Part 6
And before you go off at this point, one last thing: Make sure Yuffie and whoever has the full cure set up are near death, preferably 1500 or less HP. (Maybe less if the character is quite strong.)

Okay, so now you need to find the Serpent in the Sunken Ship, as they're the only enemy in the game that you can run into again and again.

Now, the serpent uses Viper breath in each turn, but if hit by a weak enough attack to get his HP between 50%-80% of YOUR total HP, he'll cast Aqualung. When he does this, theoritically, he should kill both the two low HP characters. Yuffie uses Final attack to morph AND kill the serpent, and then the second character casts Fullcure four times to give you time to do the glitch.

End
So after all that, during the full cure spam, you get the w-item glitch ready as usual before yuffie morphs it and kills it, and thus you can close Mind Sources.

Now, this set up, while convoluted and crazy, can also not work all the time since Yuffie seems to really want to dodge Aqualung. It's a super pain in the butt, and I wish you luck when/if you attempt it, but maybe you'll have better luck.

*phew* So there you go. A small walkthrough to w-item glitch for Sources for your Steam version of FFVII. Best of luck to you all.

Original Authors Notes
I haven't tested this out myself as I lack the time to do so. However reading as this was done using the Steam version of the game, it is always worth a shot as the grinding using my method would definitely take you longer.

Please note however that for this to work, as Kibatu said, you would need to have your source inventory at zero. Meaning if you've farmed more than enough for 1 character you would need to exhaust it first on other characters before you get the trick to work again.

With that said, you'd eventually have to repeat this trick multiple times as the max counter for all items is still 255. So if say all your companions and Cloud has zero of one stat, you'd need to farm them 255 x (# of playable characters in your roster) and that's just for one stat. Same thing goes for the method I made in this guide.

@IM4XS - I chose the Sunken Gelnika area because it had most, if not all, of the sources. Yeah, Asian started the grind trend now look at Assassin's Creed lol.

(operation mindcrime mimic :)

So just Fact.
You can defeat Ruby under lvl 80 as well as Smaragd.
(Without) farming into madness by some preperations.
(find Mimik. find 2xObject. find Knights of the round (depending on golden Chocobo))
that's all you have to do.
And kill the Priest as well. :)
IM4XS Jan 18, 2023 @ 11:03pm
So... farming "attack" go to destroyed Reactor at Zack's home
...farming "defense" go to medeel and kill the whirling ones

or just stick to the sunken airplane near "Costa del Sol" farming any kind of
Att,Def,Lck,Mgc.....

just 500-1500 Monsters to get your grid...

Do not forget... Asian Game...loves Grinding/Farming
(All not neccessary for Ruby and/or Smaragd Weapon)
There are still other "golden ways" to go
IM4XS Jan 18, 2023 @ 10:56pm
nicely done... sometimes i feel like funny.
but:
As soon as Yuffy gets Konfor... (i don't know the english).her "ultimate Weapon"
she becomes the "Morpher"
She and only This weapon are able to deal at least 9/10 dmg at morphing.

No more "analysis" to see what HP Enemys are at... she just hits
The more as mightier enemy is, deals ca 80% more dmg and does this full dmg at any morph

@IM4XS - I like those. Now I'm hungry...

@Peachey - Interesting insights. Yes, I think I remember something similar happening to me a long time ago when I was experimenting. But yes, I think that does work. Thank you!

@smallHead When you say "at least for 4 of the stats" I assume you're referring to the fact that the other 2 are single encounter fights, so you don't have time to duplicate the sources before the battle ends, right? If so, it can still be done, the easiest way being Final Attack + Morph, followed by Final Attack + any long animation spell, ideally Full Life or Full Cure with Quadra Magic paired. Or, you can just have multiple Final Attacks paired with whatever after the first Final Attack + Morph.

Then set it up as you normally would with the first slot of your items being 1 Potion or whatever other item. Make sure that Yuffie dies with the enemy being on just enough HP that it dies with the Final Attack + Morph, then repeat the process as you stated. Combat won't end as Yuffie will first Morph, then loop into several spells that you paired with the other Final Attack materia. Something to think about if you ever decide to max your stats again, haha.

@iceicewater I hope you figure it out! It was kinda fun to try, and it definitely made the maxing out more tangible. :lunar2019laughingpig: I think the most important thing to keep in mind is that it will duplicate whatever item is in the slot - so it's not duplicating a potion specifically, but rather whatever item is in the slot of the first item you use - which is why you can duplicate a Source despite not being able to click on/use it. Which was the big "ahh" moment for me when it worked. :lunar2019grinningpig:
