ODST With Classic Rank Colors For Brutes

Beschreibung
This mod makes brutes in Halo 3 ODST follow the classic Halo rank color scheme: blue, red, white, gold. In the base game, almost all ranks are blue, making it very hard to tell the strength of who you're fighting. This mod makes enemy strength obvious at a glance, allowing for more planning and tactical gameplay.

Halo 3 ODST has six normal ranks of brutes: minor, major, ultra, captain, captain major, and captain ultra (there are other special ranks like chieftain, but this mod doesn't affect them). In the base game, all of these ranks are different shades of blue besides the captain major, which is gold. I decided to make their color match their strength like elites in Halo 1 and 2. Unfortunately, there are six ranks of brutes, but only four classic rank colors for elites: blue, red, white, gold, so I had to combine some ranks together. I have developed my own naming system for the ranks too.

Vanilla color.........Vanilla name.........Mod name.........Mod color
blue.........................minor.......................minor..................teal
blue.........................major.......................minor +..............blue
blue.........................ultra.........................major..................red
blue.........................captain....................ultra...................silver
gold.........................captain major........zealot................gold with brown undersuit
blue.........................captain ultra..........zealot +.............gold with red undersuit

The minor and major were combined into minor and minor + since they're both pretty weak. They're both bluish but they can be differentiated by different armor and a different colors.
The captain major and captain ultra exactly the same strength on Legendary and almost the same on every other difficulty. That's why I felt it was fine to give them the same color armor and only be differentiated by their undersuit color.

The bodyguard rank is another that is affected by this mod. It's a different shade of blue than in the vanilla game, but is mostly unchanged. It's strength is exactly the same as the minor +, so blue is a fitting color for it.

To make this mod, I used VKMT's Improved Brute Shaders. Thank you very much, VKMT!

Elite from VKMT figured out how to make the Improved Brute shaders work in ODST and helped me to do it. Thank you, Elite!

Here's a version of this mod for Halo 3: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3047172171

I've updated the mod! It was actually much easier than I thought. It's also much smaller now since I learned how to use shared.map and campaign.map.

Apologies for the broken mod. I'm currently hard at work on a new that I'll be releasing soon. I'll try to update this one eventually, but Steam Workshop is honestly pretty painful to work with. I'll probably update it sooner on Nexus just because it's more convenient.

can confirm, it doesn't work. Neither does the Halo 3 one

New patch broke this.

This mod may be less useful on ODST because of the makeup of enemy squads. I'm not sure. But at least a player can tell at a glance how powerful any brute is.
When I made the original mod, I was very confused about whether the ultra was more powerful than the captain or even captain major. Once I checked the tags, and found out that all of the captain ranks are significantly stronger than the regular ultra, I decided to change my coloring system.

I think Bungie felt the same way, because they strip it down to just brute "followers" and brute captains, with chieftains being a rare sort of brute "boss". But because the Brutes are so front and center in ODST and 3 they felt the need to expand on their ranks because they were replacing Elites. I dont know why the futzed with the rank colors beyond just making it "unique" from elites. I can see the logic, but I don't agree with it. TBH, i'd rather just keep it simple *regardless* of what their stats are, but that's just my opinion.
And yeah, I don't play ODST that much either, but I tried it for ODST and it didn't really feel like anything changed as far as rank colors are concerned.

That's the thing about the Captain Major and Captain Ultra, though. They have exactly the same shield and health values in Legendary. On other difficulties, the Captain Ultra's shield and health values are literally only 1 point higher than the Captain Major. Disappointingly, they are basically the same rank.
I've done my best to make a 4 color system (blue, red, white, gold) fit a weird rank system that has 6 ranks with two of them (the Captain Major and Captain Ultra) basically being the same. Ideally, I'd like to see a mod that strips down the number of ranks to 4 - minor, major, ultra, zealot - just like to cover picture for this mod. That's beyond my modding capabilities now, though.
What you say about ODST having different kinds of enemy squads seems like a very valid point. I've played a lot less ODST than I have Halo 3, so I'll have to see what I think of it when I play more with this mod. Either way, I appreciate your feedback!
