Use a controller with THPS 1 + 2 in Steam

This guide will describe how to use an Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, Steam or third-party controller with THPS 1 + 2 on Steam.

Setup

Start by plugging in a controller over USB or connect it wirelessly.

Supported input controllers according to Valve include

• The Steam Controller
  
• The official Microsoft Xbox One Wired Controller
  
• The official Microsoft Xbox One S Controller (wired or wirelessly using Bluetooth)
  
• The official Microsoft Xbox One Elite 2 Controller (wired or wirelessly using Bluetooth)
  
• The official Microsoft Xbox 360 Wired Controller
  
• The official Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows (with wireless receiver)
  
• Sony Dualshock 4 (wired or wirelessly using Bluetooth)
  
• The official Nintendo Switch Pro Controller (wired)
  
• Logitech Wireless Gamepad F310, F510, and F710
  
• Razer Kishi and Raiju controllers
  
• SteelSeries Stratus Duo

Valve also says other input devices may work even if they aren’t officially supported.

If your Switch Pro controller isn't working

If your Switch Pro controller isn't working, follow the instructions at this link to re-pair it over Bluetooth and unhide it and then it should start working for you. Apparently you must use Bluetooth, not a wired connection.

(Tip from that link: "You have to hover your mouse cursor over it in the center of the bottom of the window. then you will eventually see the "Unhide devices" message")

If the controller is supported, the game will recognise it and change the onscreen prompts from keyboard keys to buttons that match your controller.

(Esc becomes B on Xbox controller, etc.)

No configuration is needed; the game will recognise if you press a controller button or a key on your keyboard and switch the prompts immediately. You can switch back and forth (or use both) without issue. For example, you can press F12 to take a Steam screenshot while using a controller.

Force feedback (rumble) support is built-in.

@brdkey, it should just be giving you a message saying something like "Best enjoyed on a controller" or similar, then you can hit 'OK' and proceed - you can play it with keyboard. Best of luck!

Well used to play this on PC havent in a while. Had a few minutes to spare and the game told me to plug a controller in and wont start unless I do so? What a waste
