1. Controls & Menu
- My most important tip: use both mouse + keyboard to move. The arrow keys can be used to increase your speed walking, and turning. If you assign a mouse button to move forward, it will double your walking speed if pressed at the same time as the move forward key. Double input like this also works for quicker turns.
- Assigning keys in the setup, before entering the game, is vital. The game is much easier once you know how to clear your vision, and command the team you will meet.
- There are 2 soundtracks. Default is the midi songs, but you can boot the game with 'CD' music. The CD music's a little tasteless, to be honest, and it doesn't loop.
2. Getting Past the Rats
- The first few levels are in a sewer, fighting rats. These are basically mazes, so try to find the exit as fast as possible.
- You will NEED to use the map. [Tab] is my preferred bind.
3. Tactics & NPC's
- Your team are waiting for you in the basement, which is immediately after the sewers. Don't shoot them! They're the tall buff dudes.
- Command the team (see setup; default is W, S, A, F). You can 'switch' and play as any member of the team, becoming the leader. Assign soldiers to follow player, or disperse. Be aware that they are pretty primitive AI, and can get in the way if you don't manage them properly.
- If you get hurt, remember to use another soldier until you can find health.
- Try to use strafing around corners. This will save your butt. Also consider moving in an 'L' pattern with the mouse, to check around corners quickly.
- Stairwells and elevators take you to the next level. Pick a healthy / armored soldier to trigger the mines one at a time; switch soldiers if you have to. Go back for health before exiting the level.
- Secret doors can be found like in Wolf3D. The map shows secret areas, so you can search nearby.
4. Dosbox Settings
Here are my preferred settings for 'dosbox.conf'. Backup the file first if you're not sure.
Just find/replace these values in notepad, or add them if they're not there.
I tried to preserve as much detail as possible while smoothing pixels.
