intro
i started to stream the gameplay for making this guide,
if you are interested in viewing some of it, you can find it here
Before you start
  • in settings-> gameplay , increase cursor size and change color (to red for example), this will make it much easier to see it in snow.
  • profession is important, some professions have more impact then others, from the several i tested the Mechanic is the best one if you intend to use cars. (and trust me, you do want to use cars :) )
  • dont spend too much time on cloths selection, you can find any of those cloths in game, and probably will replace it soon after starting
  • you should play the tutorial, there are some mechanics that are easier to learn there than in game.
  • unless you are after a very challenging game, in game settings:
    - turn off perma death
    - clear infection on death
    - enable loot respawn
    - set starting season to spring
  • if you intend to invite friends at some point, start a multiplayer game as you can't easily switch from single player to multiplayer saves.. (just dont forget to set a password - unless a bunch of randos joining your game is your thing :) )
the rest you can decide for yourself, or just leave as default

controls
i've seen some people find those out only after playing for some time, so here is the jist of the important stuff

T - torch/light - uses the small 9V batteries (also turns on lights in the car)
MMB (middle mouse button) - if you have enough stamina, 1 hit kill by executing a fatality. (doesn't work on larger zeeks)
RMB (right mouse button) - on sniper rifles and binoculars- zoom out further.
C - crouch
H - in car -honk the horn, on foot - whisle
at the point of writing this guide
- if you are looking in a container,
  • right mouse button click consume/use the item,
  • left click moves between inventories
- if looking at your inventory only
  • right mouse click drops the item
  • left click use/consume it.

G - show health bar of destroy-able buildings like walls, doors, etc...

U - drop backpack
if you are holding a tool/weapon in your hand, you need to unequip it first before equipping another
same goes for backpack, you need to drop your current one (can use U) before picking up a new one

first things to do
  • find a suitable base location, the house and garage at the starter location can be enough if you are just starting out.
  • get a backpack, and replace it every time you find a bigger one. (you will want it :) )
  • dont worry about storage when starting, you can drop items on the floor (in house or outside) and they wont respawn (AT LEAST AT THE TIME OF WRITING THIS GUIDE)
    - to easily pick up items, make separate piles based on item types, like clothes, food, metal, wood, sticks, etc...
    - screwdrivers and wrenches can go in one pile you wont be using anytime soon, so no need to loot them if you dont have the space
  • no need to craft the basic items unless you have to, you can find pretty much better items than the started stick/fiber tools and weapons without a hassle
  • you can almost always outrun the zeeks, dont be too proud to run away if things get too tough. (you can also climb on top of cars/other objects that zeeks can't reach you)
  • if you are inside a building and you see more than a couple of zeeks coming for you, better run outside and fight there.
  • when you look box of nails, box of matches, bottle of pills, if you have multiple of them, better open them, since the content quantity is random (can also be empty) and there is a high chance you can combine the contents into a single inventory slot. (there is always a chance, however small, you are lucky and the content needs more than 1 slot :) )

    first things to build
    - workbench, since it's the only way to make nails other than finding them in the wild
    - rain collector - you can build a few, make sure it's not obstructed above since it requires direct rain contact... for an easy passive drinkable water
    - if you happen to hunt, then stove and the fat converter
    - get the table-saw as soon as you can if you plan to use a lot of wood, and use it to turn logs into wood - it's more than double the amount of wood you get from a hand saw.
    - if you find some seeds, you can build a farm plot and plat those seeds, just make sure to build it with clear path above so the rain can take care of it for you. unless you are in a hurry to get the crops, you can let the rain take care of everything - it will just take longer for the plants to grow
*** in the image on the right, only the bottom 4 farm plots are watered by rain, the top ones are partially covered by the roof, so no go.

  • bows are pretty good silent killer, and you can pick up and reuse the arrows/bolts (most of the time) - who doesn't want to be Daryl? :)
  • dont forget to use the map, and put map markers
    - make sure to mark on the map any drive-able car you see,
    - mark survivor SUVs to re-loot after loot spawns
    - mark potential new base locations for that time you might want to move out of the base
    - if you leave your car to explore an area - mark the car location on the map - this will help you avoid relying on memory where you parked. and "dude, where's my car?" situations.
    - try to be aware of where you are on the map, if you die, there is no marker, so you will have to find your stuff on your own
Exploring
this section is still work in progress...

Loot

important items to loot and bring back to base:
- nails (at least until you have built a workbench and can make your own)
- fuel, car parts
- food
- ammo
- food (yea, written it twice since it's important :)), at some point when you have enough stored in base you can stop bringing food back to base and just keep a stack on you while exploring
- medicine
- gun parts (required for creating gun repair kits and weapons)
- any repair kits, gun repair kits, duct tape
- try not to eat the jam in the jars if you can (you can make duct tape out of it :) )
- any duplicate tool/weapon is not a must since you can always repair, but make sure to keep the higher durability item, also you can sell duplicates / useless weapons/tools to the trader for good price

useful items but not at the start of the game...
- repair kit materials (screwdriver, wrench,
- watch, compass, cigarettes - if you have the room, can keep a pile of it (or a chest) for trading, these give good value when trading
- gas mask/advance gas mask, not so useful at the start, there are a couple of use cases where you need it in order not to take damage, also gives good value (200 for regular gas mask) at the trader

useless items you can drop/ignore at the beginning of the game
- purification pills, its ok to use on the go to purify those dirty water bottles, but you can always boil water at any fireplace/stove/campfire, so shouldn't occupy precious space in your inventory unless you have free space

Wondering trader - (a.k.a Buck Fernandez)
while exploring the map, you may encounter the roaming trader NPC, he has various items for sale (he has different inventory every time i met him), sometimes good items like katana, and a bladesaw on a stick :)

you will need to approach him while he's standing still, which sometimes can be hard since he seems to be running alot, either chasing zeeks, or running away.
most of the time, he eventually gets mauled by zeeks. (or "accidentally" shot by players)

POIs (point of interest)

list of POIs you should be checking out,
you should mark on the map any POI you find during your exploration of the map,

Gas Stations

with the latest path adding a usable gas pumps (single use only), gas stations are useful,
you can get at least 4 fuel cans (single use) + any loose fuel can loot

Storage lockers

you will need to smash the doors open with a blunt weapon/tool
great loot, can be car parts, food, weapons, cars, anything...

autoshop /car shop

car parts, repair kits

Ambulances / hospital

mostly for pain killers, cough medicine and the radiated blood and syringes (needed to craft the cure)

Trading
You can trade with trader NPCs,

to find a trader, you are faced with a couple of options,

There is a roaming trader you can meet while exploring the map.... (Buck.....:) )
You can also build the CB radio and call the trader.

if there are zombies near the trader, he will fight them, or run away, and can be killed and eaten by zombies.

Using the CB Radio

when the light is green, you can click on the radio, then there is a random chance of a successful call you will be notified by a voice feedback message if the call was a success.
after a successful or failed call, the light will turn red to indicate trader calls is disabled. (until it's green again)
on successful call, a trader will show up shortly, you might have to look for him behind your walls protecting the base, as he usually gets stuck on his way to the CB radio table.
he will stay a while in the same spot before running off..

Trader Types

There are multiple types of traders, each offering different items based on the type,

  • Car Parts Trader
  • Clothing trader
  • General trader
  • ...

Prices
prices may vary between traders - didn't test it in multiple runs,

items i ind best to sell:
  • watch/compass
  • any extra weapon you don;t need and is just occupying precious inventory space (rifles, pistols
  • mostly), prices ranges from 50 to 200 + for rifles, so keep collecting those pistols and shotguns you don;t intend to use... :)
  • gas masks - keep a few for the map part that requires a mask, but any excess masks you dont need can net you a nice price - 200
  • binoculars can fetch a nice price - 85

trader items
not sure if the prices are consistent between traders or games, but here is what i found in my game,

from the car parts traders you can get
- fan belts and starter motors for 200- batteries for 25 each
- repair kits for 45
- full fuel cans for 150

Buck Fernandez
has different inventory each time,
can carry unique items like katana, sword, saw-blade on a stick,
on occasions runs straight into zeeks and dies...

nice guide, this was probably a change after you wrote it... but if you have a hammer, you can dismantle some fixtures/fittings in houses for scrap items i.e. cloth, wood, NAILS etc. electrical appliances included as long as they aren't lootable containers
