The Wolves That Hunt at Dawn

This is a guide to one of my two WolfQuest packs, the Wolves That Hunt at Dawn or more simply the Dawn Hunters.

I've been wanting to do this for like 2 years now but only remembered to do it today!! Just a guide about my main wolves, their mates, and the lore of my pack :D

This is somewhat inspired by SootSketch? Like I got the idea before reading Soot's guide but after reading it I might've accidentally put stuff in this I wouldn't have otherwise. Go check out Soot anyway, they're really cool and a great artist!

Leaders

Afterglow was the founding male of the Wolves That Hunt at Dawn. He lived a very bold life, jumping at every opportunity to prove himself over and over again.

In Game Coat: Lamar Canyon 856M

Appearance: Afterglow is has a mostly cream colored coat, but on the top of his head, back, and the tip of his tail, his fur turns the red of a dying flame or the afterglow of hot coals. He has bright amber eyes, glowing with a ferocity only few can tame. He has a scar over the bridge of his nose and a scar running down his left shoulder.

Personality: When he was younger, Afterglow was reckless to a fault. He would attack predators without thought and rush heedlessly into hunts without a single question of his own health. As he grew, he still held onto his bold nature, but he was able to adopt an ability to calculate risks. Once he met his first mate Snowbrush, he became very protective and loyal. Every wolf, even those in packs much bigger than his own, learned to fear him. He was strong, perhaps even the strongest wolf in Yellowstone, and even in his old age managed to hold this fact true.

Major Life Events: At one year, gained his shoulder scar from an elk. At one year, gained his ear nick to a coyote. At two years, dispersed from his home pack. At two years, gained his snout scar from a bear. At two years, met Snowbrush. At two years, had his first litter. At three years, met Shadow after Snowbrush disappeared. At seven years, lost his first puppy. At eight years, died peacefully.

Timber was the second leader of the Wolves That Hunt at Dawn and also the wolf who coined the newer and simpler pack name, the Dawn Hunters.

In Game Coat: 5th Original Coat

Appearance: Shorter and leaner than Afterglow, Timber definitely takes after his mother more. He has a cream base coat with a white underbelly and a chocolate brown stripe that runs from the top of his head to the tip of his tail. He has tufted ears and a dark spot over his bright amber eyes. He has a scar over the left side of his mouth.


Personality: Timber had always been the sweetest and most cautious of his family. He knew how to keep calm and level-headed, and his littermates always came to him for advice when until they dispersed. Timber went with his sister, Flare, but after a while they decided to split from each other. After leaving Flare, Timber became less calm and more frantic as life in the wild showed its true face. He met Oak, a wolf much like himself, but after she died he grew distant and cold. He never truly regained the soft personality he had in his puphood, but he eventually warmed up to his new mate, Tinsel.

Major Life Events: At two years, dispersed with Flare. At two years, left Flare. At two years, met Oak. At three years, had his first litter. At four years, gained his lip scar from a bull elk. At four years, lost Oak. At four years, met Tinsel. At seven years, was killed by the Crevice Lake pack.

Blight was the third leader of the pack. She reigned the longest, passing during the summer of her eighth year.

In Game Coat: Spitfire

Appearance: Unlike both the former alphas of the pack, Blight has a dark brown coat. Her underside is a lighter mud color and she has a white spot on her chest, white paws, and a white tail tip. She has chocolate brown eyes and no scars.

Personality: Blight is the most playful wolf most have seen. Even if she lost two of her littermates to sickness and almost drowned multiple times as a pup, she definitely never let it get to her. She loves jumping around Slough Creek, but she prefers Amethyst Mountain as it doesn't flood during the spring. She had a protective streak during her first litter and ended up killing a cougar, and after that litter she decided Slough Creek wasn't for her.

Major Life Events: At three months, lost her two siblings Moon and Mackerel to sickness. At two years, dispersed. At two years, met Glade. At three years, had her first litter. At three years, lost Fennel to a stranger wolf. At three years, left Slough Creek with Glade to go to Amethyst Mountain. At four years, had her second litter with Glade in Amethyst Mountain. At four years, lost Rift to sickness. At four years, watched Glade get killed by a bear. At four years, lost another pup, Earthstar, to sickness. At four years, met Autumn and invited him to help raise her pups. At five years, had her first litter with Autumn. At five years, lost 6/7 pups, leaving only Verbena alive. At six years, had her second litter with Autumn. At seven years, had her third litter with Autumn. At eight years, had her fourth litter with Autumn. At eight years, one summer morning, Blight laid down to rest and peacefully passed away.

Snowbrush was Afterglow's first mate. She was calm even in the toughest of times, and taught Afterglow many things about the wild.

In Game Coat: 911M

Appearance: Snowbrush had a coat the color of stone that faded to a light gray near her lower legs and tail. She had pale yellow eyes and streaks of brown throughout her fur. She held herself confidently and had a lean structure, completely opposite of Afterglow's aggressive stance and bulky body.

Personality: Calm and collected, Snowbrush thought about the dangers of doing something even as simple as hunting a deer fawn. She would've protected her pups with her life if she had to, but thankfully it never came to that. She was Afterglow's grounding force.

Major Life Events: At three years, dispersed. At four years, found Afterglow. At four years, had her first litter. At 4 years and six months, disappeared.

Shadow was Afterglow's second mate. It took a while for him to warm up to her, but when he eventually did, he realized she was just as good as Snowbrush was.

In Game Coat: 926F

Appearance: Like a robin, Shadow had a black coat with rust red near her underbelly and feet. She had splotches of gray surrounding her sides and face, and eyes the color of sunshine. She had a similar build to Afterglow, fluffy and strong.

Personality: Shadow complimented Afterglow's more aggressive nature with her calmer one, but she wasn't nearly as collected as Snowbrush. She would run into fights with cougars and bears with nothing but Afterglow to back her, and surprising nothing bad came of this.

Major Life Events: At two years, dispersed. At four years, found Afterglow. At four years, had her first litter. At eight years, lost Afterglow. At eight years, died peacefully in her sleep.

Oak was Timber's first mate and only true love.

In Game Coat: 7F

Appearance: Oak had a light brown underbelly with a grayish-brown overcoat. She looked not unlike an owl, with big brown eyes and tall, pointy ears. She had white streaks on her back and face and even in her youth had gray around her muzzle. She had a radio collar.

Personality: Oak, much like Timber, was calm and protective of those close to her. She would fight to defend them and give them her life. . . which ended in Timber's grief. She didn't like diving into fights head first and would've rather sat back and observed for a few moments, but she didn't have the best reflexes.

Major Life Events: At two years, dispersed. At two years, met Timber. At three years, had her first litter. At four years, fought the bull elk with Timber. At four years, was killed by a bear.

Tinsel was Timber's second mate. They thought of each other as just friends, but promised to help each other continue their legacies by raising pups.

In Game Coat: Cinderella (42F)

Appearance: Tinsel was a light blue-gray color with a white underbelly, face, and tail, and she had black ear tips, paws, and tail tip. Her eyes were golden and she had a bulkier build than Timber.

Personality: Tinsel was rather lazy and didn't like hunting, but she protected her pups efficiently and cared for Timber. She oftentimes wandered off to mark territory alone because of her dislike for spending time with other wolves, but she was helpful in every way she could find.

Major Life Events: At two years, dispersed. At three years, found Timber. At four years, had her first litter. At seven years, was killed by the Crevice Lake pack.

Glade was Blight's first mate.

In Game Coat: Grizzler

Appearance: Glade had a pale gray undercoat with a brown and dark gray overcoat. He had patches of white throughout his body and is bigger and stockier than even Afterglow. Glade had a scar on his right back foot and a radio collar.

Personality: Glade was an enigma. He was interesting but also mysterious, and even after having their first litter together, Blight felt like she still had so much to learn about him. He seemed to know everything about the wild, from hunting the strongest elk to defending the den from the biggest bears.

Major Life Events: At one year, dispersed. At two years, met ???. At three years, had his first litter. At three years, ??? happened. At three years, met Blight. At four years, had his first litter with Blight. At five years, had his second litter with Blight in Amethyst Mountain. At five years, was killed by a grizzly bear.

Autumn is Blight's second mate. Similar to Tinsel, Blight's mother, he's in agreement with Blight to not interact with each other romantically, but help grow litters together in exchange for protection. He helped her raise her second litter after Glade died.

Deities

The Wolves That Hunt at Dawn worship the land and those who gave it to them.

Heath, the goddess of the sky and the hunt, brings them prey and rain when needed. They usually ask Heath for good hunting when the sun rises and the world is flushed in dawnlight. They don't name pups after the Dawn, as it is sacred, but Dusk is free to use!

Wild is the goddess of the woods. She sends rabbits running through the bushes and the wind that rattles the trees. When a pup is lost, they ask Wild to bring them home safely.

Ripple, the god of the seas and storms. Before crossing a flooded river, the Dawn Hunters ask for safe passage across. They thank Ripple for the streams that cut through their forest and the water that hydrates them.

Fade is the god of balance. He makes sure that both life and death are equal and that nothing is over-hunted nor over-populated. He protects the balance of the world.

Wither is the god of disease and death. When a pup gets sick, they ask Wither for forgiveness as he only brings plague to those who have done wrong and disrupted the balance. He and Fade work hand in hand with each other-- Fade protects the balance while Wither helps when it gets out of hand.

Stories and Lore

Sundance the Selfish: Sundance was a very selfish wolf. She wanted all of the warm sunshine to herself, so she went and fought the Sun for it. Sundance lost, and to punish her, the Sun sent down fires to destroy the forests.

Little Breeze the Determined: When Little Breeze was just a puppy, he decided to race against the much older wolf Jackdaw's Swoop. When the race began, Little Breeze fell behind easily. Instead of giving up, Little Breeze harnessed the calling from his heart and zoomed ahead. He won the race, and in his wake left the wind to shake the trees.
