Laser Slicer does in fact use melee attack thrust on the charge attack, it goes farther the higher it is.
You're right on the rest but the melee attack thrust is still important on those weapons, especially on the laser dagger and lance since you're not always going to be able to charge attack and they have pitiful range on normals.
Cancelling an attack with assault boost can be useful, it does kill all your momentum though, just like QB it's pretty much a matter of when to use what.
Melee weapons also have different attack recovery which allows you to cancel a whiff attack almost instantly.
You can also cancel you melee dash attacks with an assault boost instead of a dodge to conserve EN while chasing. In most cases, this is the best way to gap close on someone as it's faster than raw dashing in and it's not as telegraphed as just assault boosting towards them.
