Disk Write Error

Typically, these two types of errors are infrequently encountered on Steam, and they frequently coincide with significant storage drive problems that necessitate thorough examinations using maintenance tools. Fortunately, in the context of Baldur's Gate 3, these issues are often innocuous, indicating merely corrupted downloads that tend to arise when a game undergoes frequent patches within a brief span.

Consequently, the standard procedures often yield inconclusive results, thereby requiring supplementary measures to effectively tackle these problems.

The standard procedure encompasses the initial two steps of the Game Update Routine.

What You have to Do BEFORE
Before applying the standard procedure you have to

Restart your PC

That was it.

For extra safety you may also clean out Steam's Download Cache.

Open Steam Settings from the main menu of Steam

Go to the Downloads tab and select Clear Download Cache

The Cause for the Issue

The core issue originates from the circumstance that either your game's process or the Larian Launcher's process has become unresponsive and failed to properly close down. This state persists surreptitiously in the background and can be located using the task manager.

When an attempt is made to update the game while the game is in that condition, it inevitably triggers a disk writing error. This occurs because your operating system cannot overwrite the files still being utilized by the ongoing unseen background process.

It is highly improbable for a game patching to generate an error suggesting an unsupported file system, particularly if the system was supported prior to the update. Such an error is generally reserved for exceptional situations wherein permissions may be absent or due to a defective storage drive, for instance. Or... you ran out of storage space...

Should your issue persist once you are done with the guide, I recommend a maintenance check using Chkdsk and CrystalDiskInfo e.g.

You can avoid the same situation in the future by setting updates only when you trigger them.

If your Download is already Stuck
Having neglected to carry out the necessary steps prior to the download attempt, you now find yourself facing the error while the download remains stuck, even after clearing the Steam Download Cache. To address this scenario, the following solution is recommended:

1. Access the game's files
Right-click on the game's entry in your Steam Library -> Manage -> Browse local files

2. Move all the content to a temporary placeholder
Cut & Paste all of the folder's content

For example: C:\BG3v4.1.1.3669438

3. Uninstall the game via Steam Library
Right-click on the game's entry in your Steam Library -> Manage -> Uninstall

4. Move/copy the content back
Move/copy the content from the temporary placeholder back to where it originally was
(copy is the safe method - in case something goes wrong you still have your backup)

5. Download the game via Steam
The game will recognise that content already exists in the designated installation folder, and it will verify the content and only download what is missing: the latest patch.

6. Excersise Game Update Routine once it is done
