PvZ: Install mods and edit user data

This guide is made for everyone that wants to play Plants vs. Zombies modded, this will not affect your game progress and I am making sure to make this as simple and understandable as I can.

NOTES

In this guide I'm mentioning 3 PvZ versions

• Published by Steam - Plants vs. Zombies: GOTY (Referred as Steam PvZ)
  
• Published by PopCap - Plants vs. Zombies: GOTY, or the original Plants vs. Zombies (Referred as PopCap PvZ)
  
• Modded PvZ (Referred as the mod name)

Can i earn achievements?
No, Steam will only recognize completing the requirements for the achievements ONLY in the Steam PVZ.

Is my user data playable in the mods?
No, most mods are based on the PopCap PvZ. This means those will save the data in the PopCap folder for said version, any other mods may or maynot save the user data in this folder. Your Steam save will only be accesible when you play the Steam PvZ.

If any widescreen mod is made for Steam (likely not in short terms), this guide will be updated.

INSTALL THE MODS

First, you will have to search and download the mod files, in this case I will download:

• Centered widescreen 16:9 by HenryJk
  
• PVZ Expanded and Enhanced by Raducu

After you finished, I recommend making a folder accesible where you put every mod you download:

Then, open Steam and click on add a product, you'll have to add the exe files that does not belong to Steam.

Most likely, pvz_widescreen.exe wont appear on the list, so you'll have to search the folder we previously made and select the exe file of the mod we want to play.

After this, your Steam library will have the exe file available for you to play. I highly reccomend changing the name of the game in properties so you don't mess up wich one is wich one.

EDIT USER DATA

NOTE: If you never played the mod, I highly recommend to play and unlock everything in the game before modifying user data, because if you unlock everything with cheats it is no longer funny. However, if you only want to get your progress back so you can play in a comfortable way on widescreen, do your thing and kepp on reding

User data are the information for any profile you make for Plants vs. Zombies.

If you played the original Plants vs. Zombies before installing the Steam version, you probably have your save from back then. If you didn't, you will have to do the following:

• Open PopCap PvZ
  
• Make a new profile if you don't have one
  
• Close the game

Now, you will need to download the user file editor application, i will leave a tutorial for it at the end of the guide. Once it's finished, open the exe, select your profile and a new menu will open.

As I mentioned before, this will NOT modify your Steam Cloud data, so don't worry about getting in trouble for it.

NOTE: If you play a mod with the edited profile, it's likely that the profile can't be edited any more. To solve this, just open the profile with PopCap PvZ.

About the guide working, yes, about the crashes when opening EaE, no news, i got the same error and some people too. Installing and reinstalling does not solve it.

It may appear to be a problem of compatibility or interference with the Steam PvZ. People who didn't ever install the Steam edition can play the game normally.

I'll try to find a solution and post it in the comments, anyone who can find it too is really appreciated.
