Foreword
Alright, so I went digging and found Damage values for attacks as they are as of 0.12.1.8

A warning at the start here:
I encountered a bug with certain weapons transferring the attack types from it to another item.
It's already been reported to the Devs.

What we have here is a listing of base damages, before skills/traits come into play.
For Melee weapons they have Skills and Traits that can modify the Damage listed.
As far as Ranged is concerned, there is nothing to increase it's damage. There is a way to get skills with Gunpowder weapons, but Energy weapons seem to be locked to LEO's for now.

Skills, Traits and Items.
Melee characters get a bonus damage modifier depending on what skills and traits they have.
These the skills Melee : Armed, Melee : Unarmed, and the traits Feeble and Strong.
Let's see how the modifier works.

A base, unskilled character has a mod of 0.5
A Feeble, unskilled character has a mod of 0.25
A Strong, unskilled character has a mod of 1.0
Melee Armed and Unarmed each adds +0.5

So a Feeble character skilled in Unarmed has a mod of 0.75
A Strong one, skilled in Unarmed and Melee has a mod of 2

This is important as they can drastically change your damage output, we're talking x8 from where we and most others start from, and we can't really add skills after character generation so pick them up if you can.
It seems we can now train away Feeble and into Strong, but if you use Events during CharacterGen to get your skill training, then you'll already be Strong anyway.
The two event choices that guarantee these increases are King Incognito - Start a Riot and Rare Salvage - Smash It.
You'll have both Melee skills and Strong, plus an assortment of others skills and traits, take a bit to get rid of Pessimistic though, it tanks your mood badly.

Still unsure how the to hit formulas work yet, but anything that increases your defence probably increases your offence, if only so that you can dodge and make another attack.
Getting Sharp Hearing, Observant and Coordination and getting rid of Poor Vision will increase your defence stats.

Get a Bingham-12B EVA suit, the black one, a helmet too, it's the only item I've seen with an Armour stat coded for it.
Definitions : What the tables mean
So let's look at a basic stat block and I'll explain what's there:
Range Blunt Cut Env Pen Micrometeoroid 100 11 44 55 1
Range is roughly how many tiles away you can hit your target at, it's also how far your bullet might go if you miss.
Blunt The most common damage type. Breaks bones and give concussions.
Cut Wounds made with these are likely to bleed/get infected.
Env Environmental Damage, I don't have a confirmation for this yet, this is either how much damage will be done to the person's gear, or how much is done to the area where they land.
Pen Penetration. There's an Armour stat in the game, currently only on EVA suits/helmets, it soaks up some damage from each hit the target takes, this helps get around that, so far it only affects Cut Damage.
Ammo Ammunition, only on Ranged weapons.

Most weapons/items with have a standard attack and a finishing blow, which is used when you attack someone that's considered Helpless and unable to defend themselves, like if they are stunned or unconscious.
I will make a suggestion, you can Strip someone who is considered Helpless.
Useful if you want their suit or helmet as you can take them off before they break or get destroyed.
Or the fact that if you're fighting in the Void, they will no longer have an Air Supply.

I broke the weapons list down into a few distinct groups, mostly for sorting:
Unarmed is holding nothing, I also talk about defence and some combat manoeuvres.
Default attacks are for anything not on the list, instead their attacks are determined by the tags on the item.
Short Blades are 1 slot blades
Long blades take up 2-3 slots
Blunts are self explanatory
Tools are our tools

Ranged is broken down into skill groups:
Gunpowder has more items, there are ways to get training in it too
Energy is more available, and less likely to blow a hole in the hull
They all share an identical Pistol Whip, so I'm putting it at the end

Attacking will do a bit of durability damage to the item you are attacking with, so be careful smacking people with your Smart Chests and Totes.

Melee - Unarmed
Range Blunt Cut Env Pen Unarmed Punch 1 6 0 2 0 Quick Punch 1 3 0 1 0 Finishing Blow 1 24 0 0 0 Tackle 3 0 0 0 0 Trip 1 3 0 0 0

A Quick Punch both triggers and attacks faster, it also uses less Stamina than a regular Punch.

Tackle and Trip should knock someone Prone and Stun them for a short while.
They won't be able to move and they will be at a disadvantage until they stand up, they are also considered Helpless until the Stun wears off, so they can be stunned and
Tackle is a great opener, but if you miss you'll hit the deck instead.
There's also a 3 option called Pull down, that I believe you need to be Prone for.

I should probably go over the defensive options as well
Dodging will increase your defence and try and avoid an attack.
Blocking reduces the damage you take by ~10%, but uses less stamina than Dodging.

Oligarch etiquette from Rare Salvage : Bribe and Rich Schmuck : Seduce.

Streetwise etiquette is available from Rare Salvage : Smuggle it Blackmarket, Crackdown : Nothing to Hide, Labour Barge Locker : Mislabel crate, Shady Deal : Gather Intel and a chance from Rich Schmuck : Hack Phone (Need hacking)

Haha yeah I gotcha. I read the other guide (was that you too?) and just wrote a quick/dirty guide of my own. Always do the seduce option, then start a riot on the 2nd go.

Etiquettes may not do anything yet but I just love collecting them.

I just had a nearly perfect run: got rid of Micro-G, got tough... and got the gambling ship! Going to try streaming for the first time to show it off.

Probably, you could always add in some other traits to keep them off, like Cruel or Shy, as they tend to limit your social options.
Btw, the best way to pick up Beautiful is the Rich Schmuck : Seduce option, likewise a good way to get both Melee trainings and a few nice social traits is from the Start a Riot option from the same event.
Biggest tip for traits is to always get rid of Micro-G Hypovolemic, it's a cursed trait affects everything you do for self-care negatively and you only need a year to drop it.

As far as I know, anyone with Law Enforcement or Pirate as a career should have Ranged : Energy or Gunpowder as a set skill.
Not always, but usually. Like EVA training, it's listed but not everyone gets it.

LOL Ranged: Energy really is the only thing I'd want soo... yeah screw that.

I just wish that it were easier to tell which LEO's have it. IDK if it's because I always go beautiful/charismatic in chargen but 80% of the time I ask somebody their skills they touch me or bemoan their pointless existence.

As of the current patch, there's only a few spots you can get a Ranged skill, and only during character creation.

Both of them from are events and it's not a 100% chance to get it.

Rich Schmuck - the Mug option has a 65% chance of getting Ranged : Gunpowder and both Melee skills, plus a chance of getting a point in Strong but you will go to prison.

Crackdown - Be a Hero has a chance of netting you Ranged : Archery, but it's currently useless as the weapons aren't available nor are they active.

Ranged : Energy is only found on LEOs and are needed for their hull-safe weapons.

Ranged : Thrown/Heavy are like Archery, but I haven't even found hints of their corresponding weapons yet.

How do you get training in ranged? I'm not aware of any way to.
