To Begin With...
Make sure you have at least over 400 People. So I would suggest clearing as much land as possible before building - if you haven't encountered the Astari. If you have - do the same but instead try expanding the sand layers to create wider areas for housing.

The Build as much as possible. Also make sure Farms are a priority when they become available.
Using The Festival Against The Astari
Once you have enough belief and can access it, use the swamp ability to either completely kill all the Astari or convert them by putting their emotional status to the bottom of the bar. - There are two choice available.

Choices -

Convert:
Go to the area where the Astari Festival is played out every hour and then proceed to place a swamp on either the left or right side of the fountain. This will kill almost half the population that surround the fountain and some will then flee to you. - Leads on to Section: Gems.

Exterminate:
Go to the area where the Astari Festival is played out every hour and then proceed to place a swamp on each side of the fountain. The Astari surrounding the fountain will quickly die and others will proceed to take their place. - This will lead to the death of most of the Astari if not all of them.

You can then proceed to place one swamp in front of the large settlement in the middle of the Astari encampment and use the finger of god to draw them out.

GEMS - Via Convert option
If you picked the Convert Method then proceed to select all your current Imagrants from the Astari Village and leash them towards the Temple of Doom sacrificing them for your Godlike influence over your people.

OR.... You could just sacrifice your own.

I just bombed there village with 6-8 meteors then used beautify to increase my happieness after sacrificing 20-30 of my own people at a time. I get the feeling that I am a sadistic god.

I accidently lit their tree on fire, then burned down the entire village (killing everyone).

I'm sad to kill all the astarian people :( I love their song! :o
Well that's a good idea to kill all the Astari that joined you because they don't give belief and take houses to live which is a precious thing. I hope they'll make it better cause I wanna keep the Astari as usefull as possible and even play with them! :)

ReTRoBuTioN54 - Did this aswell. Then proceeded to sacrifice my people for gems, with the Tree Of Joy it goes rather well and with a Fountain even better. I'm not sure how well it goes with the Astari still around though. XD

It is true that you could do it that way. _Joe___ - But the Issue is for If you don't have enougth GEMS. You must Sacrifice, which lowers your happiness level drasticly.

While this method does work, I thought I'd add that it can be accomplished without ever placing a settlement. The necessary cards unlock at population threshholds, which can be achieved simply by expanding into available space. Placing one fountain and one tree of happiness and a few holy trees will give you enough happiness in time to grow your population to the correct levels - and I expect not dealing with wheat would be an added bonus.
